Great trip
The trip was great, all the hotels were fine and the food was good. ( don't expect five star). The coach was good and the driver was excellent. The places visited were all worth the visit and the scenery was fantastic, all in all a great relaxing trip.

Beautiful Highlands, hotels not so much
First, let me say that our coach and driver were lovely, and the Scottish Highlands were absolutely beautiful. People we met whilst touring were also so lovely that, for those reasons I would recommend getting yourself up there. However(!) there are huge caveats to consider. Almost without exception, Shearings customers are now considered 'Second-Class' by the hotels that we had to stay at. Shearings 'Guests' are given low quality set menus to choose from, the lowest standard rooms, and minimal respect or interest by the staff. There are, of course exceptions to this - there always are, but there are also extreme examples to consider. For example, Craiglynne hotel in Grafton-on-Spey. Here we were 'greeted' by two gentlemen who aggressively demanded our driver park on the road, rather than outside the hotel because, they said, there is a weight restriction here. Our driver had not been told of this but asked if his passengers could disembark first. This was curtly refused with "That can be done later." Rude and dehumanising, thanks for that. When we finally reached our room, we were met by a freezing draught from the sash window, jammed fully open and which couldn't be shut. It soon became apparent this was done to freshen the room's dank, musty and mouldy air. The window frames were thick with black mould, as were the bathroom fittings. The shower was broken, black and hung as limp as ... well, you can provide your own simile for an unused, unusable, droopy appendage. Think the worst you can and you might get close. The carpet was grimy and stained, the hairdryer thick with greasy dirt and the remote for the TV hadn't been used for so long that upon opening the battery compartment, it was clear that the aged, corroded batteries had leaked their lifespan away long ago. We decided that, if THIS was the cleanliness level in a guest-facing situation, we were not prepared to risk what the kitchen might be like so skipped the evening meal, (that we had been instructed as to be taken at 8pm - not before). Fish and chips from the chippie in town was delicious, eaten on the street because other people bringing their own food into the hotel were turned away; obviously a recognised thing. Additionally, people who did risk dinner told of raw salmon having to be sent back and service so lackadaisical, (mains not served until 9pm), that they left their uneaten food on the table and returned, hungry, to their rooms. Breakfast, (06.30 and no later), was another horror. The crockery was BLACK with dirt. I settled for the toast - I could do that for myself. Oh, and who thinks it's a good idea to stack the public stairwell AND the bar area with piles of dirty laundry - obstructing access to a fire extinguisher? Craiglynne, it seems. I do have photographic evidence of all this.
Yes, this was an extreme example, but it has to be said that none of the hotels Shearings chose for this tour appeared happy to see us, (apart from the lovely people at The Caledonian in Ullapool - and that was far too short a stay). I know of food allergies that were not catered for at all, with staff claiming not to have been alerted to them, and so shrugging their responsibilities off. Other coach company parties were given obviously preferential treatment and, it seems Shearings have been placed at the 'Budget' (cheap) end of the touring spectrum - hardly fair, given the cost of the holiday - they are certainly NOT budget! It appears to me, and others, that the company simply do not inspect their own hotels or, if they do, must we accept they are happy for their customers to be made to feel so unimportant and even flat-out nuisances? I have lodged a complaint with Shearings, but haven't heard back yet.
My recommendation to anyone thinking about exploring the beautiful Scottish Highlands would be to find a trip that is based in one - maybe two - hotels, with trips going from there - definitely not six hotels over 7 nights; the staff are weary and cannot wait to see the back of you. So sad that a wonderful experience has been so spoilt for us. Perhaps the parent company, Leger, might be called upon to raise standards?

However, we’re genuinely sorry that your experience was significantly affected by the standard of accommodation and the treatment you received at several hotels.
The conditions you describe at the Craiglynne Hotel, including concerns about cleanliness, mould, the broken shower, the condition of the crockery and the obstruction of access to fire safety equipment, are particularly concerning. We’re also sorry to hear about the unwelcoming arrival experience and the issues you reported with meal quality, service and the handling of dietary requirements at other hotels.
We understand how disappointing it must have been to pay for a holiday and feel that you were being treated as a second-class guest. The quality of accommodation, hospitality and dining is an important part of the overall holiday experience, and we’re sorry that these aspects fell so far short of your expectations. We also appreciate your concerns about the pace of moving between six hotels in seven nights and how this affected your enjoyment of the tour.
Thank you for explaining your concerns so thoroughly and for highlighting that you have photographic evidence of the conditions described. We understand that you have already submitted a complaint and have not yet received a response. We’re sorry for the additional frustration this has caused, and we’ll share your feedback with the relevant team so that the issues you have raised can be brought to their attention.
We’re pleased that The Caledonian in Ullapool provided a more positive experience, but we regret that this was not representative of your overall stay.
Thank you again for your honest and detailed review. We’re sorry that what should have been a memorable holiday exploring the Scottish Highlands was overshadowed by these disappointing experiences.

St Ives and Falmouth were lovely very quaint
The Pentire Hotal the location was beautiful and the hotel was clean and beds were comfortable. The food was great home.made and freshly cooked every day
