Meols Wirral Store , appalling customer service. Shop shut at random times for 2 hours. Offers are never updated. The worst convenience store I have ever been in.

I would like to say a massive thank you to the manger who’s name I never got but you will definitely know who you are. I had an incident which I will not state, as it could off been a one off and I don’t want it to effect the shop. They sorted it out straight away and was no hassle to them, I am truly greatful for your kindness and would definitely say they have the most polite staff in on this day that delt with everything amazing including the male behind the till on the Saturday 12th in the morning. Thank you so much your act of kindness has been noticed.

I called at McColls in Oxford Street, May Bank, Newcastle-under-Lyme this morning (Friday 11th June) but left almost immediately without making a purchase. A young couple entered the shop just before me - neither of them wore a mask. The aisles are very narrow and the couple showed no interest in exercising social distancing. They were both obviously 'at home' with regard to not wearing a mask in this store so, no doubt, they were aware that they could do so with impunity. The young man at the cash desk didn't challenge them about their failure to wear masks. I certainly won't be using a McColls store in the future.

Avoid this company and it's "new friend " Safeway. Blatant rotten food (literally) sold at stupid prices. I have cut down what I buy from over a hundred pounds each week to about twenty . Feel sorry for the staff who are all brilliant. Just the idiot's in charge. Asking trading standards to investigate. 😡😡

The Mccalls business practice is to buy out most if not all shops in the area to provide no other alternatives then massively inflate prices to capitalise.
Due to close proximity to other shops in my area they had to reduce prices on essentials by 50% showing just how much they profit they make.
Little to no help given to shop staff to maintain upkeep on the building which leaks from the roof nor the refrigerator's that frequently break down and are replaced by more 2nd hand ones that break within weeks.
This is a company that during lock down and people struggling to make end's meet started a price hike that led to an extra £2 added to the price of baby milk compared to the Cooperative or other stores.
Useful if you have absolutely no other option and don't mind the feeling of being robbed blind but other than that avoid like the plague.

I am retired but work two five hour shifts per week in my local store. We have an excellent manager who does his best with the limited resources made available to him, and a nice team to work with. My issue is a simple but important one in that the company do not take staff safety seriously. Recently when working alone I refused service to an aggressive gentleman and was subjected to a stream of abuse and a threat to jump over the counter and batter me. I made it plain that I was no longer prepared to work alone but was expected to do so again a few days later. I am still seeking to get this resolved. Lone working should stop. In my opinion there should always be at least two staff on duty whenever the store is open. The company has a duty of care to staff and is failing in this. Simply saying that 'we don't have the hours' is not sufficient. It is the duty of Area Management to find the hours and ensure staff safety.

At a local branch in Haywards Heath the staff are ok but the residents in that area must think that they are immune to Covid! At least 50% of customers enter the shop with no masks to the extent I have just put my shopping back and walked out! Not sure why the staff don't mention the regulations and I am sure they lose customers over this.

I all ways get excellent service from your staff jayne and her son are excellent and very helpful they go beyond excellent.All the staff are very good.I think you should go back to co-op goods not very happy with safeway.Not enough delivery to the shop need much more.My shop is in thanet bush ave.

Rudest staff I've ever come across. I was simply trying to send a letter and staff were very rude. With zero provocations. Will not darken their doors again.

I worked here for a mere 3 years and only because I was tuped over from another company so HAD to work here but I recommend it about as much as I recommend you taking a roasting hot bath whilst you have 3rd degree sunburn. Sound fun?

Ok so let's start with the pros as that will be quicker...
• Alright choice of sweets.
That's it.

Cons:
• Don't think your getting a day off at Christmas, they will make you work Christmas day usually 9am - 3pm (I know, essential Christmas dinner eating time!!) Granted you will get time and a half but it's not worth it in my personal opinion. When we asked our area manager what would happen should none of us come in Christmas day (considering the majority of us working there were parents with young kids or older staff members) we were told we would be sacked (said in a joking way of course!?) I have to confirm though we were advised by HR that it was voluntary but the bosses of mccolls didn't make it seem that way, in fact they went out their way to make you think otherwise.
• Area managers may come in unannounced and pull you to the side for an "unofficial meeting" without the option of HR or a union rep. When discussing my personal concerns about my job I was threatened with said job for going to HR as I could be seen as "harassing"
• The chief exec may send out a two page global email to all the company stating you are going to get a pay rise, only to retract it just as soon as it was sent saying it was a "typo" and use the national minimum wage increase as their "pay rise" excuse.
• You are left alone sometimes for full shifts, having to close the shop at 10pm, count the money and lock up yourself. Please note, it's public knowledge that since 2008 till 2014, most recent that I'm aware of, McColls were fined hundreds of thousands of pounds for not ensuring their staffs safety and leaving staff on their own to which even today they seemed to have swept under the rug (or broken shop floor tiles in this case).
• talking of broken floor tiles, anything broken will NOT get fixed unless you chase head office for 400 years. Fridges essential to the job would breakdown and you would be quicker walking to the North Pole to cool your chilled food and get home again before McColls will fix it.
• Don't expect to have a life outside McColls. Flexible? Yes. Getting calls to come in at 3 in the morning because the Costa machine alarm is going off. No.

I wish someone had written up these pros and cons for me so I could make an informed decision but the prospect of either not having a job atall or working with McColls and making some money, was no contest really. To be fair, I'd never worked with McColls, what was the worst that could happen?

Friendly service. Staff always happy to help. As my local shop they have a good supply of stock, and the hours are excellent.

Discriminating against non British or ethnic minorities - 3 white employees laughed at my face because I’m not British or white. The worst of the worst, truly. Hope they go out of business

I went into the McColls on Whaddon Way and I was served by Jo. She was extremely friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Although very busy She took the time to ensure that I left with a fantastic experience. A asset to the company

The shop in Heatherside - what a waste of time getting service - the person who manages this shop does not understand why customers make the business - so slow - lady on the postoffice counter has to deal with the traffic of the needs for the post office services and also is expected to manage the sales side of the shop - wake up and have a additional member of staff to manage the sales side

Next time will go elsewhere - there was number of people waiting outside the shop and several people also just got fed up and went off somewhere else...

Go to another sub office - or if you are not interested in the business then close the post office counter and let another retailer appreciate the business

the McColl's in Ingatestone is okay but the majority of the products are overpriced. however the surface is good but the person behind the counter can be rude depending on the employee you get.

Absolutely disgraceful, a small shop in a small community, ripping off locals who have no place else to shop. Charging 'petrol station' prices. In havercroft, west Yorkshire.

The he staff are friendly and helpful, l asked Dean for a kiss he said as a joke and we had a giggle. Good banter
