Outstanding experience from beginning to end!
Earlier this year we toured both the North and South Islands for 55 days in a superb Wilderness Double for 4 motorhome. The handover from Thomas at Auckland and our return with James at Christchurch were excellent. This is our 3rd hire from the UK with Wilderness and we have just booked our 4th! We can't rate or recommend Wilderness highly enough. If you want a great customer experience in a reliable, clean, well appointed and comfortable motorhome, Wilderness is the rental company for you.

5 stars for customer service from pick up to drop off and throughout.
We were a family of 4 (couple with 2 young kids) on the road for two weeks with Wilderness' Fiat Ducato 7.4m motorhome. Motorhome was in top condition, very clean. Driving experience was excellent throughout. Had my mirror clipped by another camper driving too close to my lane, the staff on the phone were super helpful and arranged for a new mirror to be delivered in Queenstown at a mechanics'. We also stupidly locked ourselves out, they immediately arranged for the AA to come and open up for us. With any issue, they always followed up to make sure any issues we had were resolved. Wilderness is at a premium to other companies, but honestly, given the service and the quality of the van, it was worth every penny. Plus how many times are you going to do such a trip to the South Island?

This is the 3rd time we had used wilderness and we wouldn’t use anyone else. The service is always great, friendly staff from start to finish, if there is a problem it is sorted quickly. A Pleasure to Deal With
We had a fantastic experience with Wilderness, both at pick-up in Christchurch (special mention to the enthusiastic & helpful Manus) & at return in Auckland 3 weeks later. Any issues were dealt with in a swift & professional manner, both before pick-up & during our trip. Our 2-berth van (Dame Kiri) was perfect for us, as where all the items provided which were all high quality, including brand new camp chairs & BBQ. I can’t speak highly enough of the service we received from Wilderness & wouldn’t hesitate to use them again, which we hope to do in the future.

Amazing motorhomes and service
If you are looking for 5 star accommodation and service then you won’t go wrong with Wilderness. I can’t fault anything, the team in Christchurch were so welcoming, went through everything on the motorhome and we were on our way. We took the VIP package which meant we had no worries if the motorhome got damaged. We were careful ourselves re driving and parking but it only needs someone else to not be careful! We got a large stone chip in the windscreen from a passing lorry, I contacted the support team and they were fabulous.
It was our first time in a motorhome and we were in New Zealand for 3 and a half weeks and I am so glad we went with Wilderness, it was worth every penny. Thank you to all the team.

CamperVan was amazing
CamperVan was amazing! Service was even better. Had some issues the first day figuring out acceleration with the van and the service department was phenomenal assisting us. Near the end of our journey we clipped a bush in a campground and broke a running light on the rear of the coach. We carried the VIP insurance and after emailing Wilderness and then upon return of the Van they were nothing but amazing! No questions asked and no making us feel awful for what transpired. Great experience with everyone we came into contact with. Will definitely use them again next time we are in NZ!

First time motorhomers
We hired the double for 4 to give us extra space on our two week tour of the South Island and didn’t disappoint. The van was a dream to drive and handled everything on our 2600 km adventure.
The living space was well laid out with a large fridge meaning shopping trips could be minimised. The bed was comfortable, the extra towels supplied were useful and the toilet/shower equipment more than adequate. I think compared to other vendors Wilderness were really good value for money. We did have one issue while away, but this was dealt with on the run, and very quickly by Hayden from Eco Plumbing in Wanaka.
All in all a great holiday with a different, fantastic view to wake up to almost every day.

Incredible experience.
Awesome vans (the only way to see NZ) but most importantly, the high touch, personalized service of the staff at Wilderness Motorhomes was unsurpassed and we felt completely welcomed. The orientation to our van was excellent. Our van (Compact Plus size) performed very well on the narrow, steep, curvy roads of the South Island. It was all we needed for the two of us for our 1700 miles of travel over 17 days, staying mostly in Freedom Camps. The communication we received prior to our arrival, coupled with orientation upon our arrival, prepared us well for the adventure. Don’t wait!! Do it.

Fantastic
It was our first ever experience of a motor home holiday, the Wilderness motor home that we hired was fantastic.It was clean , well equipped and very easy to understand when it came to the every day running of the vehicle. A big thank you to all of the staff at wilderness who helped us plan our trip booked the ferry, moved the ferry booking and for calling to make sure everything was going well on our journey.
We plan to return to NZ at some point and when we do there’s only one company that we will be calling on to rent our motor home.

Not a great experience from what we believed to be a premium product.
We are experienced motorhomers and therefore know that sometimes things can go wrong.
Nothing prepared us for what we discovered when using one of their vans for 3 weeks in January 2024.
A great deal of road rash (damage) to the exterior of the van. A failing handbrake and squeaking wheel hub added to our annoyance. Filthy pots, pans, cutlery and dishes followed by threadbare broken outdoor chair and disgusting grease covered and broken table. Privacy curtains were dirty and the velcro straps kept failing resulting in them flapping constantly whilst driving and occasionally blowing around in front of the driver!
The toilet cassette leaked and stank. It had clearly never been given a thorough clean and even the supplied blue tabs failed to control the smell. The rear air vent cover kept falling off, sometimes whilst sleeping in the van.
Wilderness admitted that this van was scheduled to be retired but Covid had delayed this.
I believed Wilderness to be a premium product but was very disappointed with the poor quality and condition of this van.
Their on road team did their best to help but the overall experience cast a huge cloud over what should have been a trip of a lifetime.
We had to negotiate hard with Wilderness and eventually got our money back but this took nearly 3 weeks for the refund to be paid!

We hired a motorhome from Wilderness…
We hired a motorhome from Wilderness for a month collecting it in Christchurch and dropped back at Auckland. We had a really good thorough run through everything with one of the team. The camper was very well fitted out, we did book the VIP package so everything was included. They also rearranged our crossing between islands. The camper did breakdown on the 2nd day, we phoned the assistance number and without a quibble, they delivered a new replacement van later that day. The quality of the camper was excellent and was very new. We did unfortunately bump the back corner when reversed into a bench, however they were very good. In every contact we had they were so happy and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had a great trip and if we ever return we would definitely use them again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Amazing experience and service
Amazing experience and service
The team at Auckland were really friendly and helpful (as motorhome novices we needed it). Quality of the Motorhome was high and we had a brilliant two weeks. We bought the VIP package which was really helpful as you get everything you might need and no excess which was handy when I hit a lamppost reversing (wally!). The folks at Wilderness were super helpful and were not the least bit negative.
When we returned to Christchurch again the team were super helpful and when we left our passports in the safe of the motorhome they organised a courier so they could catch us up.

Well this wilderness campervan hire is head and shoulders above the other competitors! We were looking to book a 2 week rental to tour NZ. Coming from GB we had no idea who to rent with, but we made the right decision! We went with the VIP package on the compact van. This was a good decision as I got too close to another van and took out a light. It was NO issue - it couldn’t have been simpler to be deal with. The real stars are the staff. Javi & Thomas couldn’t have done more for us from the beginning to the end. They were knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble from recommending supermarkets and helping to return some documents we’d left. The van was in good working order and spotlessly clean. We got entry laundry as we were away for 2 weeks and they even stored our big suitcases for us whilst we were away. Couldn’t praise or recommend this company highly enough. The pricing was maybe a fraction higher than competitors - but I’m a great believer in you get what you pay for and the all round service and product was truly 10/10. We plan to return to do the south NZ island in 26 and we will definitely be hiring our van from wilderness! Thanks Javi & Thomas.
