We just finished a 10 day hire driving the South Island with our 2 kids. What an amazing experience. The staff were fantastic and went through everything, we didn’t have any plans for the start of our trip so they recommended a route for us to take and this was a highlight of our trip. Would definitely recommend Wilderness, one of our best family holidays so far.

Traveling through New Zealand in a Wilderness Motorhome was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. From the very beginning, the staff made everything feel seamless, they were kind, thorough, and patient in walking us through every feature of the motorhome so we felt completely prepared before hitting the road. Their warmth and attention to detail made it clear that they cared about more than just renting us something, they wanted us to have the adventure of a lifetime, and we truly did!!
The motorhome itself was spotless, beautifully designed, and surprisingly very spacious, even with 4 of us. It had everything we needed to feel at home, but the biggest game-changer was the WiFi. (INCREDIBLE) My friends and I were still balancing work while traveling, and having reliable internet made it all possible, from sending emails in the middle of the mountains to rerouting where we were trying to head on the fly was really nice to have. It was that perfect balance of adventure and comfort, and it honestly felt like the best of both worlds.
What made this trip extra special, though, was the experience of traveling in our 20s with close friends. Having the RV door wide open to mountain views, pulling over at random roadside fruit stands, and ending nights around the little kitchen table in the Motorhome was so perfect and set up nicely. These are the kinds of memories you never forget! the kind you talk about for years. Wilderness gave us the freedom to see what we needed and beyond, and it honestly was easy to drive (even through snow!).
From the pick up in Christchurch to drop off, everything with Wilderness was smooth and stress free, which made it so easy to just focus on enjoying the adventure. I can’t recommend this company enough. If you’re thinking about exploring New Zealand, do it this way. Traveling by motorhome gave us the chance to slow down and see literally everything and more.

I've been lucky enough to travel with Wilderness four times over the past seven years in different models, and each time has been a dream! Wilderness is a step above in quality and service from any other NZ motorhome company - their motorhomes are incredibly well thought out in terms of space and design, with awesome features that make life easy - we rented the King/Twin for 4 this time and loved the large garage for storage, having a twin bed setup (as I travelled with a friend), separate toilet and shower and Apple Carplay for navigation and music on the road. Renting in the height of winter with sub-zero temperatures overnight, you need to be able to rely on staying warm and comfortable and the gas heating is super effective! The team at Wilderness really take care of you through the whole process too - we felt like valued customers from beginning to end.

My friend and I have just completed a 10 day winter South Island trip in July, travelling deep into Fiordland and the Mackenzie/Aoraki area. We travelled in a "king/twin for four" Carado. It was a fantastic experience taking a Wilderness motorhome. We loved the spaciousness of the vehicle, and the superior insulation and great heating, meaning we were warm and toasty inside, depsite the negative temperatures outside! Wilderness lives up to its reputation as a premium option - right from the beautiful and calming pick up area, the super chatty and friendly staff and the exceptionally beautiful and well maintained vehicles. Everything worked perfectly in our motorhome, and it was fully equipped with everything we needed for a great week of exploring. We especially loved the full size fridge and freezer, the space between the twin beds, the separate toilet and shower and the huge garage. Definitely would choose Wilderness again, especially for a winter trip where warmth and comfort is so important.

We had an amazing 9 day journey travelling from Auckland to Rotorua to the East Coast NZ to a remote area to visit family, where we had to go through many winding roads through to Gisborne then Ruatoria and back around the top coastline into Whakatane and Matamata to Hobitsville and back to Auckland. It was very fuel efficient and we only filled up once and topped up at the end. It handled the roads well and the weather was good to us. We did not have to drive through rain or wind or icy roads so I can't comment in that.
The double for 2 was very spacious for just the 2 of us. There is a toilet, shower and small kitchenette with main necessary items. We never needed to use the toilet or shower as there was always one where we stayed. The bed was comfy and the second bed drops from the ceiling but we never needed to use that. The front seats swivel around to the dining table which is a great feature. The van is very private as there were blinds on every window. They are abit delicate so just be gentle. There was a big fridge and freezer that fit all our food and drinks and plenty of storage for groceries and luggage. We had unlimited wifi which never dropped out and was needed for maps on our journey. Tv was great. We just logged into our Netflix and Spotify.
Francesca was our main customer service person and she was amazing! She was very clear with her instructions and filled us in on how to work everything to the point we were very comfortable and never needed to call for help. Everything went smoothly and we were very happy. I left my sunglasses in the motorhome and they will be sending them back to me in Oz. Great customer service. Thankyou.
If I could recommend a couple of things that would make this Motorhome better I would make it so the dinette table could be a swivel or could be stored to give more room to move around inside when not in use, and a microwave for ease or reheating instead on having to use the gas when using the power. I would also recommend chocks for leveling the van when parked and an adaptor conversion lead to plug into a house socket (maybe for hire) when visiting family or friends for more than 3 days. We did purchase one ourselves from Repco for $150 but also had extra Lpg gas just in case.
Overall the van was amazing and the price was affordable. Thankyou to Francesca and the Wilderness Motorhome team. You were amazing and we had a wonderful adventure!

I chose Wilderness because of their strong reputation, and it turned out to be the right decision—my campervan experience in New Zealand was nothing short of amazing.

Wanting an adventure that allowed for spontaneity and freedom, we did a media hire for a Wilderness Suite motorhome. As first-time Motorhomers, it turned out to be the perfect companion.

We were impressed by the thorough and friendly onboarding process at pickup—it set us up confidently for the journey ahead.

Despite its generous size, the vehicle was incredibly comfortable and surprisingly easy to drive—even along winding mountain roads. The interior was impeccably designed: thoughtful lighting, ample storage, and clever touches like front swivel seats that transformed the space into a cozy gathering spot around the central table.

The standout feature was the kitchen, which came remarkably well equipped. From a coffee plunger and strainer to a full range of pots—and even an oven tray for the gas oven—every detail had been considered. The onboard sink provided hot water powered by gas or electricity, making daily tasks seamless.

We freedom camped for all 10 days of our trip, fully appreciating the motorhome’s self-sufficiency. The central heating, also powered by gas, kept us warm on even the coldest nights. Comfortable beds, fresh linens, and plush towels added a layer of luxury, and the bonus of a hot shower was a true highlight.

It’s clear Wilderness is dedicated to offering a premium experience. Being able to show up, turn the key, and find everything we needed in a beautifully appointed home on wheels allowed us to focus on what really mattered—having the time of our lives.

Traveling with a loose itinerary in a Wilderness motorhome was nothing short of magical. We’ve been completely converted to the motorhome life—and we can’t wait for our next adventure.

We rented for 2 weeks in April 2025. Starting and ending in Christchurch. The pick up and drop off process was very smooth, staff extremely friendly and helpful.
We hired the Suite for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids age 11 and 10.
What I really liked about this motor home was the fact the kids could see out of the front window with no double seat opposite blocking their view. The drop down beds gave us plenty of space in the back during the day.
The separated shower from the toilet was a nice feature and it was a nice shower but we did mainly use campsites when needed as there would never be enough water for 4 of us to shower every day.
We did a mix of freedom camping and powered sites which worked really well.
It was well equipped in the kitchen, enough of everything for 4 of us.
Lovely to be dropped off at our hotel at the end of our trip.
We would definitely hire from Wilderness again.

Couldn’t fault the overall service and offering from Wilderness. When I researched different companies Wilderness were not the cheapest and I’d hoped that the extra that I paid would provide good service and a quality motorhome, this assumption was proved correct. We did have an engine fault light come on in the second week that need addressed but I knew that this wasn’t Wilderness fault as it was a nearly new Motorhome. The roadside assistance directed us to the nearest garage and rang them to expect our arrival. Problems happens but it’s how you deal with them that matters. Paul from the Christchurch branch was a great help.

We had a phenomenal time driving around the South island in our Wilderness motorhome. 'The Suite' felt super luxurious, and it was well worth having the section at the back that converts from a lounge to a bedroom. Everything worked without any problems. The customer service was also amazing. Many thanks to Rebecca who helped to plan our journey, showed us how to work everything, and gave us a few goodies for the road. We will 100% use Wilderness Motorhomes again the next time we are visiting NZ.

We had a fantastic experience with Wilderness, the motorhome was immaculate and really well equipped. The quality of the fittings and accessories was first class. We had a really memorable and comfortable trip and it was made so easy with the motorhome we had. i cannot reccomend them highly enough.Their service and care are truly exceptional. When we return we will be using them again.

We really could get to many of the beautiful remote corners of New Zealand which we were never allowed to go to on our three previous trips using other rental companies

On March 1st we returned the motorhome Double for 2 after 6 weeks of vacation. We would like to share our experiences with this motorhome with you. The car drives excellently. The lighting in the motorhome is very cozy. What is missing in this Double for 2 in our opinion is the awning. You cannot always place a motorhome 100% horizontally, so it would be nice if there were 2 leveling chocks on board, this prevents rolling out of bed and is very nice when cooking in the kitchen. We do not understand why there is an extra pull out bed in the motorhome, this is at the expense of storage / cupboard space that we therefore lacked. The toilet room is too small, with the door closed you can no longer move yourself. There were only 2 cups on board, which meant washing up several times a day. In summary, the Double for 2 did not provide us with the luxury and comfort that we expected.

We rent for a duration of 4 weeks travelling from the South Island to the North Island. We did have some vehicle issues which were solved via the Adventure support Dept. We also booked our crossing between Picton and Wellington by Wilderness and it was wonderful.
It the best was to travelling across NZ
For of we come back to NZ we will rent our camper through Wilderness.

If you're going to rent a motorhome, go with Wilderness. They may be a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for. Wilderness were exceptional from start to finish, can't recommend them highly enough. If we go back to NZ would definitely book with them again. Spotless beautifully designed motorhome, powerful and easy to drive, very comfortable beds and seating. Had everything you needed, including camp chairs, table and bbq. Special mention to Tina, who did our orientation and gave us loads of great recommendations tailored to what we like doing.
Coming from the UK, we also agree with a previous reviewer re the attitude of the Kiwis towards their country and their open friendly approach, it's very refreshing!

We had a Double for Two from Wilderness for the whole of January 2025. We booked the vehicle some 6 months earlier after carefully considering the many options available in N.Z. From our first contact with Wilderness and from their website it was obvious that the company was run and conducted by an enthusiastic team of individuals whose mantra was to provide the best experience for the holiday maker.
The vehicle was introduced to us and every feature of it being shown and its use explained. After the first nights camping a follow up call/ email was received to ensure we were satisfied with the vehicle and performance.
One of the main features we were keen about was the permanent made up bed. Previously in the USA a camper we hired did not have that benefit, while it was a larger camper, the bed had to be made each evening.
After a mishap with the camper, the company made arrangements and provided a replacement which was a brand new vehicle. We took the VIP insurance feature which gave total peace of mind during the month. We were able to thoroughly enjoy the amazing geography of both islands, and the welcoming attitude and helpfulness of the Kiwis.
I wish that the UK still had the respect for people, property and their country as New Zealanders do.
