Buyer Beware When Purchasing Jewelry

I purchased a Cartier bracelet from The RealReal, but had to return it due to sizing issues. I was told the refund would be processed within 5–7 days and was never told about re authentication process. Unfortunately, nearly a month went by and I still had not received my refund.

Because of the delay, I filed a dispute with my bank. The bank reversed the charge and issued a temporary credit while they investigated. Shortly after, I received an email from The RealReal stating that they would not issue my refund unless I canceled the dispute and provided proof that it had been dropped.

When I contacted my bank, they explained that the merchant must process the refund first before the dispute can be closed. I shared this information with The RealReal, but they still refused, claiming that my dispute violated their terms and conditions—terms that were never clearly communicated at the time of purchase.

This experience has been extremely frustrating. At this point, it feels like my money is being held hostage. My bank has advised me to keep the dispute open while they continue their investigation.

I would strongly caution others before making high-value purchases from this company.

Please add a window to add to initial order without paying extra shipping fees. Maybe give a couple hours to add to the original order. I had no one to help me.

Helpful but wish they would post the grams of 21k and 22k gold.

I don’t mind a bag used on the outside, but I wanted the inside to be clean and the real real did a great job of making sure the bag was clean, had no smell and arrived looking gorgeous!! I love my bag

Before my appointment, I confirmed in writing with a RealReal representative that this would be a valuation-only appointment, completely non-committal, no onboarding, no signatures, no banking information unless I chose to consign. I confirmed these terms multiple times. I also informed them in advance that I would be bringing 15 bags.

I arrived in the loading zone for my 2 PM appointment as instructed. The manager directed me to unload all 15 bags and place them in their intake area so the evaluation could begin. She then told me I could not stay parked there and needed to find parking elsewhere, despite my having asked in advance where to park and receiving no response. I followed her instructions exactly.

When I returned, I was told I was late and could not be seen.

The same manager who accepted my bags, directed their placement, and sent me to park used the time it took me to follow her own instructions as the reason to deny my appointment.

The explanation then changed entirely. This was not a valuation appointment. It was a full onboarding session requiring personal and banking information, which is why they were unable to evaluate even a few of the bags. The exact opposite of what I had been told in writing. When I asked how they planned to evaluate 15 bags in one hour while completing onboarding, there was no answer.

What followed was repeated pressure to leave my items there despite my having declined clearly and multiple times. My bags were already in their intake area. The terms had already changed. And they kept pushing.

When I pointed out the discrepancy and began documenting the interaction, it escalated immediately. The manager told me I could not record the convo (I asked), nor give me corporate contact details. Hence, I took a photo, which is legal in a public retail space. The manager moved toward me and put her hands on my phone. When she could not provide any rationale for the misrepresentations, she loudly called security and had me escorted out. As I was already walking out the door, she followed me and threatened to call the police, first over the photo, then claiming I was causing a disturbance because I turned my back to her, as I was actively leaving at her request.

No one acknowledged the discrepancy. No one attempted to resolve it. The response to a legitimate concern was escalation, intimidation, and removal.

If you are planning to bring valuable items to this location or any RealReal location, confirm everything in writing before you go. Once your items are in their intake area, the dynamic changes.

Update: Within hours of posting this review and submitting a formal complaint, I received an automated email from The RealReal informing me that my account has been permanently closed. No one addressed the physical contact made by their staff member. No one addressed why the terms of my appointment changed after my bags were already in their intake area. No one addressed the pressure I received to leave my items in the store overnight.

I bought the final sale the row product which means it’s non refundable. But one pocket of the dress is being cut off, which is not mentioned in the description.

My shoes are sooo comfortable and a perfect fit

I love this store location I buy and sell on the real real all the time but actually going into the store in Chicago was quite an experience staff was awesome and I made an appointment to sell

Les baskets R13 qui m'ont été livrées étaient défectueuses. Les tirettes en synthétique avaient été remplacées de manière grossière avec des tirettes matalliques et les pattes de protection avaient disparus. Les baskets étaient passées dans la machine et avaient rétrécis( j'ai 3 autres paires de cette marque et de ce modèle, je peux donc comparer). J'ai fait 50m et les tirettes ont cédé. Impossible de les retourner alors que je demande depuis le début un retour. On m'écrit et on me dit de les retourner à mes frais alors que si le produit avait été correct, je l'aurais gardé. Realreal n'a pas controlé les baskets avant de les envoyer. Je trouve que ce site est extrêmement malhonnête. Il n'assume pas ses erreurs. Je perds donc265 euros!
