I have played bass for many years but there are lots of things I want to improve on. These are all covered very comprehensively in talking bass. The white background is very helpful and focusses your attention on the lesson material. The only improvement I would suggest is to make the videos a little bit shorter and a few close ups for fretting and right hand picking technique.

Although I am 67 years old and playing Bass Guitar since I was 16 and having learned a lot from my music teacher. I still watch all of Mark and TalkingBass lessons, and I am always learning something new. For one thing, one never stops learning Bass Guitar and I derive a lot of pleasure from watching Mark and he makes it simple to watch and learn. Thank you Mark, you're the greatest.

So far so good, learning songs that are suggested on this site. The only thing that would make this site better would be to add a different view of the fingers on the frets/notes. Keep up the good work!

While there are many lessons available from a variety of websites and other sites like Youtube, TalkingBass is by far the best. I still have a long way to go but I have grown tremendously in my knowledge of music and playing skills because of Mark. He teaches in a way that anyone can follow, from the novice to the seasoned veteran. Whenever I come across someone who wants to learn how to play the bass I refer them to Talkingbass.net!

I bought the Bassic Fundamentals course as although I’d played bass in the past I didn’t really know what I was doing or what to focus on. The lessons are all really easy to follow and well structured, and stay on the point. This helped me to keep my focus on my playing and technique. I can’t recommend Mark enough!

I had played bass for years off and on in country and bluegrass bands, 1-4-5, Root 5th,etc.. I came across TalkingBass.net and I have to say I learned everything I now know about music theory now, chord construction, and general musicianship from Mark. Great teacher, great lessons and format, and most of it is free. I have recommended Talkingbass to several people with no reservations. I still can't read a note of music, but with what I've learned at TalkingBass I can get through many different kinds of music and chord progressions without stinkin' it up too much.

57 yrs old and finally bought a bass snd started looking for lessons. luckily found talking bass website and started basic starter courses. After first few days went from I’ll never get this to already getting a grip on it and now confident I’ll be playing very soon. Great place to learn. Very well structured and most importantly FUN

I’m currently studying the Chord Tones and Slap Bass courses but digging in to the slap exercises more right now while applying what I’ve learned so far on the other course. Without question these courses are the best thing that’s ever happened to my playing. I never dreamed I would be able to get far with slap technique but Mark is a far better teacher than anyone I have come across. So many of the exercises he demonstrates sound near impossible to play at first, but as he breaks it down and I follow everything he says, I’m getting through it surprisingly fast. Mark does a near perfect job of explaining every detail without overdoing it...a tough balance to pull off. If you are self motivated, don’t waste your money on private lessons. Being able to review previous material on video is gold. The price is dirt cheap for what you get and if you want, you can go back through the entire course again for review. Can’t do that with private lessons. I couldn’t be happier.

I am new to bass and starting at what could be called a "mature" age. I have taken some lessons at the local shop where I bought my instrument. These consist of learning songs by the instructor telling what fret to put your finger on writing out a TAB for songs and playing with a track. I do enjoy learning and playing songs like that, but I wanted to really LEARN the instrument. I want to understand bass lines and what makes them great; music theory; reading music; and eventually creating my own music. That was "beyond the scope" of the lessons.

After doing some searching, I was fortunate to find Mark and Talkingbass.net. I have purchased courses and I am now learning how to read music; music theory and chord tones; walking bass and more. I've learned I didn't even know what I didn't know!

Mark takes you through each topic one step at a time and builds gradually in an engaging manner. I still have a very long way to go, but I am excited for each practice session, because I know I will learn one more thing today. I have been amazed at what I have learned in a relatively short period of time.

I am thankful and excited for all the work Mark does. Getting music in my life has been an amazing gift!

TalkingBass is my number 1 resource for bass. I've tried a number of others, but TalkingBass is the only one that really keeps me moving forward on my bass journey.

I have thought about this often, and my one true regret in life is not having learned music theory as a youngster. To that end, Talkingbass has opened my eyes to a whole new world. Unlike the guitar, you cannot pick up the bass, learn a few simple chord shapes and (ignorantly) strum tunes with an (undeserved) degree of self-satisfaction. My understanding of chord construction, modes, intervals, creating bass lines, and any number of other topics, has improved exponentially by studying under Mark's expert tutelage. In a saturated market, there are any number of bass tutors online. I have sampled (and still occasionally utilise) many, but for me, Talkingbass, and Mark's vocation for imparting information in an easy to understand manner, with both patience and logic, along with the sheer quantity and quality of the resources available, is head and shoulders above anything else out there. As a bass community, we should treasure what we have, and I am grateful for having the opportunity to express how I feel on this matter (bearing in mind I am a cynical, cantankerous 50-something with an aversion to hyperbole, eulogy, and indeed, computers!).

Mark is a very good teacher! The contents at his site are first class and can benefit any student if they are willing to put the work in. If you're serious invest your time and a few dollars. The content is very reasonable. No, I'm am not being paid to say this. I am a user of the content and have tried lots of stuff out on the web.

Mark is THE BEST online teacher. If you have an arcane doubt or question, no doubt he has covered that topic in one of his videos. He knows music theory and has impeccable technique and, best of all, knows how to explain it. He isn’t a virtuoso trying to show off with mutant licks, but an accomplished musician with a structured approach.

I like Mark's no nonsense approach to bass playing. Instructions are clear and delivered in a way that makes them easy to understand. As someone who has picked up the bass after about 12 years of not playing - and being "senior" in years - I have been able to progress at a good rate following the on-line lessons. There have been many "light bulb moments" when things have just fallen into place. Having said that, I have signed up to two courses but am way behind with both! Getting the house completely re-decorated, then having a two week winter holiday, followed by my wife coming down with the flu has stalled my advancement a little. I am also semi-retired but have been called in to work to cover for colleagues who are off sick. I hope to catch up with my bass playing soon - honest!

Mark has a very engaging personality which takes any stress out of the learning. I can highly recommend TalkingBass to anyone wishing to get to grips with the bass guitar.

Learned so much in just the little time i have to practice, between jugling full time job / being a dad / social life... Mark, is so much easier to understand and when teaching he teaches than show off... he doesn't do a "look at me, i'm better than you" show, what he does is teach the materials... I am 61 and first started playing as a teenager into my early 30s. Then life caught up me and I sold basses and equipment and began raising my family. About 5 years ago, while on a cruise, Gerald Veasly was giving mini bass bootcamps. The bug bit me. Once I got home, I needed to find someone who could help me get back into the groove of things. That's were Mark came in. His lessons covered a breath of subjects, things I needed to begin playing again. To be honest, I am a member of TalkingBass.com and one other online site, both of which I like for different reasons. Mark is straight forward but his enthusiasm is contagious. Since I go to GV bootcamp every year I wish he could make it. Even VW bootcamp or even a small one here in the states would be great. Keep up the great work.

Brefly, Mark is an excellent teacher. I am able to easly follow his instructions and he is consice and get to the point quickly.
