No BS, just good, clear practical instructions. Plenty of free stuff for the beginning to intermediate players, and more advanced lessons for money. This is the go to place for me for anything to do with bass.

Talkingbass is a Godsend to me as I am a novice just learning bass late in life.
So things have to be explained to me like I'm Five! ...Lol!
The course is also valuable to experienced bassists, because in music,
you never know it all, and always there's something more to learn.
Mark does an excellent job explaining even difficult
topics and excercises by putting them in simple terms.
His demonstrations are clear and concise.

Music in general as everyone knows is not easy. There's so much to know
and pay attention to. Mark not only emphasizes the fundamentals of knowing your instrument
through playing Scales, arpeggios, modes, etc... but shows you how to apply them
with regards to making music., then he also teaches techniques, and dynamics.

I would recommend Marks videos to anyone looking to learn all the fundamentals and more. Your never too old to learn something new. I'm 58 and still learning after playing since I was 13 years old. Plus he has a cool accent. Kudos dude.

I really recommend Mark Smith and talkingbass.com to anyone for learning bass..Mark is an excellent teacher, not only explains every move..you can get tracks to play along with..all the theory..super well organized..whatever you want to work on, any stage from beginner to advanced, you'll find all you need..The special quality apart of the overwhelming amount of lesson material, is that Mark is always positive and encouraging...i wouldn't have dared to learn the bass (over 60 and 2 handicapped fingers on left hand)..but i am totally inspired and playing with others is really wonderful!!always grateful to Mark Smith..my bass Guru!!

I'm playing guitar for about 40 years now, played the organ for ten years, and about one year ago I moved over to bass, so I made quite some music but for that instrument I'm still just a beginner.
Found the lessons of Mark pretty early on on Youtube and since then followed a lot of them. Bought two courses, which help me a lot.
The content is thorough and very well presented.
Now I'm playing in a band!

I'm a very casual bass player, have been for the last 20 years. Mark has put awesome free content on his site: popular riffs, techniques, etc all to help you play better AND understand what it is you're doing, but with just the right amount of music theory not to overwhelm you either. I haven't taken a paid course yet but I'm really thinking about it, even though I only play by myself at home. Mark is a great teacher, and he seems to be an all around good guy, which makes the video courses a pleasure to follow too. Honestly that counts too...

I started playing bass four and a half years ago and soon discovered that the internet had many tutorial sites available. I tried a few of the well known ones, but soon found that I preferred Mark's down to earth approach to instruction and, in addition to the free material, paid for two courses where I needed extra help. My playing has progressed from zero to recording studio level, as I'm in a local band and we've just finished our first album, so many thanks to Mark for all the assistance and insights that his lessons have provided.

I've been on TalkingBass a while, and have found the site to be an excellent resource, and Mark to be a great teacher! I played bass in a number of garage bands in high school, and now in my 60s have returned. The lessons Mark provides on this site are all so good that I took the plunge and am now working through several of the courses. I've learned not only the technique I was missing, but have learned theory as well. Great job, Mark!

My playing has Improved as a direct result of Mark's teaching! He is articulate, thorough, and knows how to present the material in the best way possible. In other words, his communication on the subject is first class. If your desire is to be a bass player, or a Better player, Mark is the Best teacher you can hope to find.

Excellent place to go especially if you're new to the bass. Apart from his detailed free YouTube tutorials covering a wide range there is also a comprehensive range of premium tutorials on the website, helpfully graded and sorted according to subject. In addition set of structured courses too. Mark has a clear, uncluttered approach to his video tutorials with no extra 'padding' and extraneous chat. He sticks to the subject in hand.

I am a hobby bass player and been playing for some years now,... I can t express how much talking bass has helped me to progress in my bass playing... I have tried other online sites and though there are other good teachers out there, nothing has helped me more than Mark, who is not only an amazing bass player but also incredibly good at explaining how to play bass, cant say really why but the way the lessons are designed nail exactly what is important to do ( and what is not !) in order to progress and learn...
I am now following the slap bass course (almost done with part 1!)
and i can almost say that I can slap a little bit now :-) !
As Mark asked for feedback. I have been wondering when working through the lessons of the slap course when I was ready to click the "complete lesson" button and move forward .. I found it difficult to tell is I "mastered" a lesson and could continue to next lesson...may be a system where you record yourself and say 10 members are randomly chosen to act as judges with mission to listen to the recording of that guy and vote yes/no giving the go to move forward if 5 of these 10 say "yes"...
just thinking loud, that s may be technically hard to achieve and would of course add complexity to the site...
