Excellent course that takes you clearly and progressively though playing the bass. In a very efficient style, you learn how to play simple bass lines for songs and are set up to take it as far as you want to go. Can't recommend it highly enough!

I love learning to play the bass with Mark, he's an exceptional teacher. Every time I have a question, the answer is usually found in the next lesson or the one after. He combines theory and practical exercises in a manner that enables you to become a decent bass player faster than you'd think possible - if you put in the work and don't shy away from the more theoretical aspects.

A lot of other sites charge monthly subscriptions which doesn’t really work for me with work commitments and so on - with talkingbass.net you can do things at your own pace without feeling that you’re paying monthly fees that might not get used if you’re taking time out.

i took tone chords premium course and this is defiantly not my last one. i really like the method of paying per course and not a monthly fee

This is the bass teacher I was looking for. I have tried other online classes but nothing else comes close. Mark is very thorough in his videos in explaining every little detail of bass playing. I have made huge strides in my own playing. It is an easy to understand step by step approach. I will always be a student of his. The price for the paid lessons is worth every penny and an extremely reasonable value considering all the content. I highly recommend talking bass for the beginner and even for the more experienced musician.

Sign up. Mark is a committed, effective educator. The material is exceptionally well-presented, genuine and serious. The site will best serve as a complement to private lessons or some schooling. But even by itself, the content here is amazing--an innovative and engaging approach to real bass education.

Buy the courses. I have purchased the Sight Reading and Walking Bass lessons. The cost is a bargain for what you get out of it. Sight Reading took me from clueless to adept in a few months. I can't read fluently or at a pro level, but enough to FINALLY understand what's going on.

Do the work. You have to do the work. The good news, is Mark makes everything easy to understand, but you have to work for this to make a difference.

I really believe that students need one-on-one lessons to really move forward. But this site is a powerhouse with a range of benefits. For example, after listening to it since the 80s, I actually learned the bass solo run to Rush's La Villa Strangiato--yes that one--from, you guessed it...Mark. But I also learned key signature identification and how to practice chords through the cycle of fourths from Mark. Personally, I would argue that the latter 2 exercises are loads more important than playing Geddy Lee runs, but that's me. I would encourage focusing on theory and reading over licks, but Mark has all of it. Metal, blues, jazz, slapping, technology reviews, tapping..... Get the membership.

Anyway, it's all stuff I never knew before--after 30 years of wandering, noodling and "learning songs." Weak. So, get the membership. Study music theory. Buy some courses. Do the work. The material here is marvelous.

I have been silently watching your bass videos . You got me hooked with the Have Your Self a Merry Little Christmas Demo. I’m a real very New to bass person. I’ve only done root notes in church. Don’t know chords etc. but the song & tabs are making me more excited to begin. Will eventually take a course . Love your work . Mike from Buchanan Michigan

This is probably the best (and my favorite) online resource for bass guitar education. Mark is an excelent music educator, and his teaching approach on each of his courses is rich in knowledge and full of details, but, at the same time his step-by-step method does not overwhelm the student with so much information at once.

Fantastic courses, really well presented by an industry professional. I have learned more in the first few modules with Mark than I had after spending hundreds of pounds in 1-2-1 lessons.

Mark Smith is without a doubt one of the greatest Bass Instructors in the world. He is also an amazing and brilliant player in itself. I started playing piano and drums from childhood up through my college days. I sang a bit in church and school choirs; so my entire life I have been musically trained to several degrees. My Uncle is the great, David Hungate, and I felt it was finally time in my life to truly learn the instrument of bass. Having a full time career as a N.C. Police Officer and Professional Actor, Writer, and Producer; I knew online courses were the only way to succeed in truly studying the craft of being a bassist. After discovering Mark on YouTube, I knew he was the one to help me succeed in my journey. The website is phenomenal. Mark gives you everything you need to become the best you can be. My goal is to have purchased all of the courses and viewed all of the free videos and other learning materials. I truly appreciate Mark's straightforward and bite-sized approach to teaching the fundamentals of bass playing. No extra waffle, just focused on what you need to know, and explained in easy to follow and logical steps. Mark always provides application of the concepts and techniques to usable bass lines which provides a nice "I accomplished that" feeling at the end of a lesson.

I started learning bass earlier this year. Never even held a bass or guitar. Had a couple of local instructors, but was not really getting anywhere. Nothing seemed to stick. So I researched several online courses and instructors. After going through several, I signed up for the Bass Starter Pack series of lessons (Beginner Bass Guitar and Bassic Fundamentals courses) at TalkingBass and it's been worth every penny! The lessons are all really easy to follow and well structured. This has helped me to keep focus on both my playing and technique. I cannot wait to practice more and more each day.

Mark Smith is an excellent teacher. Period. It is one thing to be a professional musician and another to be a teacher, and he has without a doubt mastered both. Being from the USA, and seeing that we are “two nations separated by a common language,” ...:)... I have a natural inclination towards American teachers. So, as much as it pains me to say it, TalkingBass.net Is without question, far and away, the best resource online for learning bass. Mark Smith, Creator of TalkingBass.net is the Most professional, non Egotistical Bass/Music teacher I have ever learned under. His approach to teaching is very down to earth and straight to the point, yet with just enough wit to make you feel totally at ease as if you've known him for years. The amount of information he puts forth in every course is extremely broad while remaining focused, everything is as he advertises, simple enough for the absolute beginner and complex enough for the seasoned vet. and that's what happens when you study under him, you may start as the beginner but at the end, your a professionally trained vet. This guy is a beast! I have been playing professionally for over seven years but still can always learn more. He is straight to the point but goes through every question I have in my head like he is a mind reader! Will continue to use his courses to learn slap (something I have never delved into) and completing my knowledge of chord tones and walking bass.
