Easy to use service and website had lots of different options, not as competitive on pricing as I would hope. Would use again for quotes.
Website is easy to use but very expensive quotes. I haven’t booked due to the price.
I have used Unbeatable hire a few times in the past and have always found them a great company. Excellent customer communication, never a problem with any booking (website easy to use), easy pick up and return however I do find them a bit on the expensive side which is fine when traveling in a large group but not as a couple.
I recently used unbeatable hire to research a quote.
After this I received several follow up emails and txt messages offering discount rates or late cancellation offer.
I haven’t book with them yet but will keep them in mind when that time come.
I have rarely interacted with a company that has cause me so much irritation and full on anger. I would not use UnbeatableHire Limited/ MotorhomeHireUK again if they paid me.
I only wish I’d thought to check reviews before using the company as inbetween the suspiciously positive reviews saying how easy it is to get a quote there are several reviews from people who actually hired from them saying the same as below or worse.
Firstly, one of the key things we needed was a late drop-off on the return day of the motorhome as we were travelling a fair distance back after a late night. On the extremely pushy and uninvited sales call I got after getting an online quote I was assured that this would be 100% fine. After I later made the initial booking online I couldn’t see how I could request the late drop-off so I emailed to ask about it. The reply said that I couldn’t do this until nearer the time but it should be fine. Not long before the booking started I emailed again asking about it and discovered that what actually happens is you may or may not receive a text the day before offering a late drop-off (at a charge of £39). Needless to say we didn’t get a text and had to get up at the crack of dawn after 5 hours sleep and drive the 4 hours back for the standard drop-off time of 11am.
Secondly, the online booking portal is awful. You have to submit a load of information using these individual steps that once you’ve completed the step you can’t view what was in it. Sometimes when you complete a step the navigation breaks and instead of returning to the main page you’re stuck on the individual step with an error message saying you’ve already done that bit. Also I tried to complete a step by following the link in one of the many many reminder emails they send out and it didn’t seem to work and I had to email them to ask if it had worked because I couldn’t tell.
The absolute worst thing about this company is the hidden costs and the payment terms. They expect you to pay the balance of the cost a full month before the hire starts which is not standard. The main extra cost was the insurance which is at least explained in the terms and conditions but it is so ridiculous that you would not expect it. I have hired campervans from many different companies big and small and never had any problem with the process like this. Basically, the motorhome insurance is not included in the main cost and you have two options to cover it. 1. Pay a non-refundable insurance waiver of £24 a day (essentially an extra 20% cost per day). 2. Pay a refundable additional deposit of £1,000 (in addition to the £250 security deposit). This option is set-up to deliberately price-out almost all customers (so you have to pay the non-refundable option) because you’re expected to pay it a week before the hire starts and it is not refunded until more than a month after the hire ends, thus ensuring that no-one can afford it. We nearly went for this option regardless but a re-read of the info strongly implied that if you were in an accident even if it was NOT your fault the deposit would not be refunded.
Getting the refund for the security deposit was another nightmare. The policy is that it is not refunded until more than a full month (28 working days or approx 40 days) after the end of the hire which is extremely unusual, every other company I have ever used have refunded the deposit immediately after the vehicle return. The security deposit refund is NOT automatic. When I chased up the refund I was told I’d receive an email on the 20th and would have to confirm on their portal before the deposit was refunded. The email did not come through. I chased them up on the 21st and the email came through on the 24th. I had to click a link to confirm the deposit refund amount. I then got another email that seemed almost the same asking me to click through and confirm the refund. Turns out that there was yet another step that I had to confirm before they would refund the deposit. And then finally it confirmed that I would receive the money back in up to 4-5 days. So another delay. It came through on the 26th.
More additional hidden costs were:
- propane gas, they only include enough for a short weekend regardless of how long the hire and the cost of buying extra from them is more than double the cost of buying direct from a calor gas stockist (£48 for 6kg compared to £22.35 direct)
- RAC cover for £24 (I have never hired a campervan where this wasn’t included before now)
- sat nav hire at £4.50 or £9 per day (depending on when booked)
- charge of £95 as the driver had 3 points (have never had to pay a fee for points on other hires! and can only assume if you have more points the cost is significantly more)
- most ridiculously, the motorhome handover cost £12 or £24 (depending on when booked). If you don’t pay that (and we refused) they basically don’t bother to actually show you how anything works, just give you some manuals and that’s it.
We discovered after we’d arrived at our destination that they hadn’t included any of the chemical needed to use the toilet and so we couldn’t use it at all for the entire holiday as couldn’t easily buy any.
And finally, the list of additional charges if the motorhome return was not perfect were extensive:
- late return cost £75 + VAT plus compensation for next customer
- fuel level not as on collection cost 1litre-£1.50 + VAT plus £40 + VAT
- waste water tank not empty cost £75 + VAT (for pulling a lever to empty it that takes a second!)
- toilet cassette empty and clean cost £100 + VAT
- vehicle not clean cost FROM £75 + VAT (max £300 + VAT)
We didn’t incur any of them but some of them are clearly taking the **** in terms of the actual cost of correcting the problem.
Fast response, nice website. Bit too expensive for me though
Was looking for motorhome hire and came across Unbeatable after googling various companies.
The website has lots of information which was useful for first time hirer's like ourselves. The quote wasn't the cheapest but seemed the most comprehensive and the descriptions of the motorhomes on offer was helpful.
I've not booked yet as still weighing up the options but from a quote perspective they have been very good and quick to respond to my questions.
Would never use them again.
The web site failed to clearly identify the hidden extras or the cost until the holiday was booked. The motorhome was not clean, and had a lot of internal and external damage. To much to list at handover. The cooking equipment and crockery was not clean and had to be washed before use. The mattress had seen better days and more stains than a dirty dish cloth. The Exeter Depot had the familiarity of a back street garage, with staff to suit. Lets hope there isn't a problem with the refund of the deposit.
BEWARE OF MANY HIDDEN CHARGES
We've had a lot of problems with this company. Notably they insist on taking a £1,200 deposit (plus £15 admin) rather than freezing the money like reputable hire companies.
Consequently they bombard you with hidden charges and admin fees almost 2 months after the rental. We're currently in dispute for over £400.
While they may appear good value you're better off using a reputable firm that doesn't miss sell.
UPDATE: We ended up taking them to court (moneyclaim.gov.uk) and won. Would recommend for anyone else who has been scammed.
Will not hire from this company again.
The booking staff online were polite when we booked the camper van. The hire did not start out well. The collection depot was changed to a location an hour and a half away, due to 'circumstances beyond the company's control, to compensate they offered us unlimited mileage (upgrade from bronze to silver package), but were 'unable' to allow for a later drop off time to take into account the added journey time to return the vehicle to the depot now further away. We were advised that a charge of £90 per hour would be applied for lateness.
On collection we were advised that the gas canister supplied would easily cover us for a week (we only needed a long weekend). I had also check with the booking staff online whom confirmed this was sufficient. During the rental, half way through the second day the gas ran out, we were unable to cook or run the fridge/ freezer - all our perishables had to be binned (rather annoying with two young children to feed!). We can only surmise that the depot (Walton on Thames) may have not replaced our canister since the last hire or failed to check whether it was full or not.
The water tank leaked. We had left with a full tank from the depot because the site on which were staying had no means with which we could fill up the water tank. When we arrived on site it had already lost 1/4 of the water. We preserved water in the leaking tank by not taking showers or washing up using the water from the tank, to ensure that we could continue to flush the toilet throughout our stay.
The condition of the van was not great. Reasonably clean, but had seen much better days. One annoying thing was that the wardrobe and a cupboard handles came off every time we opened them. A small detail but rather annoying. One of the depot employers explained they would be retiring the van in the near future, and suggested we tape the handles on (without offering to fix them himself!).
Any text or voicemails to the depot manager during our weekend away, regarding the problems we were experiencing were duly ignored. On returning the vehicle, we received a monosyllabic service from the depot staff.
I have noted with the company the above issues, but heard nothing back. On emailing a month later wondering where our deposit is, we received a form confirm that we will received it in 28 day minus a small petrol charge for not returning the tank full (despite filling up the van closeby). No compensation for the leaky water tank, and gas canister as yet has been offered.
If we had more time on our hands we would pursue this with the company. But as busy working parents, life is too short and we do not have the time or energy to pursue this. So I would recommend to anyone considering hiring from the company, to think again and look elsewhere. This was not good value. In addition to what seemed a competitive hire price, leading up to the collection date, additional fees came up - an insurance fee for example, which is fine but it had not been obvious that this was not included in the original $699 hire cost. Perhaps we missed the small print, but as busy parents of young children its not always possible to check every minute detail. A lesson learned on our part.
So please if you consider hiring with Unbeatable Hire, check out the hidden costs first and be prepared that your experience may not be as good value or comfortable as you had hoped.
I was disappointed by the price having read a great price offer on the rear of one of the company's vans I was following. This especially in October, an off peak time I would have thought.
Took them too long to reply to my query.
They send “system” emails purporting to be from an individual but if you reply immediately you get an out of office.
They then send additional marketing emails without permission offering Amazon vouchers in exchange for reviews...I assume they’re expecting positive ones, unfortunately my experience of dealing with them was not at all positive :-(
Ready to navigate website and mobile site.
Proactive help from the sales team.
Pricing is competitive.
Great structure of locations.
Good response time and staff friendly- just too overpriced
Do not use this company. There are so many hidden extras it's unbelievable. And when you finally get your insurance money back they decide to take more money off you without explaining what for. I have asked for many many requests for call backs and all they do is palm you off. Stay away from this place.
Although I didn’t end up hiring in the end due to change in circumstances the website was easy to use, quotes were reasonably priced and easy to contact customer service!
I only went on the website to get a quote, and now I'm in a never ending hell hole of unsolicited spam by phone, text and email. I have told them so many times to take me off their database and they say they will, but a few days later it all starts over again. Don't even go on the website!!
I found the website easy to navigate and all the options with lots of detail.
