What has happened with Howies?

They used to have a great selection of merino layers and items that you would actually want to wear. Now they seem to be pushing an environmental agenda at the expense of any style. What is happening with the colour palettes?? They used to have some good staples, like long sleeved merino tshirts and hoodies. But now it’s lemon fleeces and poo brown trousers. What’s happening howies!?

Amazing ethical company, I get all my clothes from Howies and find them hard wearing and smart.

I have purchased quite a few items from Howies now the quality is always amazing, the clothes are made to last and the fabrics are top quality. I was so happy to see the utility trousers available for women, there a great addition to my wardrobe thanks so much!

Very impressed with the quality and durability of the clothing. Have been a regular customer for 5 years and have had an excellent experience. Recently I bought a technical running top which shrank slightly when following the suggested washing guidance. This was replaced immediately. Extremely pleased with customer service promptness of response and helpfulness

Purchased a pair of jeans in the January sales. delivery was swift and in eco-friendly packaging. I'm quite fussy about my jeans and know that Howies are striving to produce clothing as ethically as possible.
Very pleased with the jeans and set about wearing them.

Three weeks into ownership, two of the rivets snapped on the coin pocket. It wasn't causing any issues, but I contacted customer service and sent some photos through. Within 2 days I'd had a returns label sent and a promise of a fix.
One week later, my jeans were returned to me in as-new condition, fixed. I know they were repaired as I'd tucked the broken rivets into the coin pocket, and they were still there.

Very happy with the service and hoping I don't need to use them again - but know that I will receive great service if I do!

I bought some joggers recently, these look and feel great but sadly broke. Customer service was great and replacement given.

Excellent quality merino base layer/underwear products, fantastic friendly and attentive customer service and sterling sustainable packaging. I am a convert to Howies and a future loyal customer.

No response from customer service email. Will update if I ever get a response.
Had response from Howies via TrustPilot that they had responded. Emails had been sent, but had gone to spam. Updated from 1 star. My mistake!

I've been a Howies customer for about 18 months, so have no idea what they were like years ago. Have to say I absolutely love all the clothes I've bought from them – I love the quality and fit, they bring me joy. I also really appreciate their ethical policies and the strides they are making towards sustainability. I did make a couple of returns initially, but soon got used to their sizing. I have no idea what a previous reviewer is talking about re. absence of lifestyle images online, as said images are one of the many reasons I spend so much time browsing their website. Perhaps he has images switched off in his web browser?

I don't know what Howies used to do in the distant past, but my message to them now is – Keep Doing What You Are Doing!

Tried calling many times, messsages left, sent numerous e-mails, sent message via Facebook and still have had no response! I have bought a number of itmes from Howies over the years but sadly I think I will be looking elsewhere from now on.

Shame how much they've gone downhill since the old owners sold the company.

I've messaged them a number of times asking them to add lifestyle images of their products. I don't understand how a clothing company can expect people to buy their products without any images of how they look on.

Such a shame. Had such a great setup for a great sustainable company designed and managed from the UK.

I think the current owners are a classic example of having all the ideas and not listening to anyone elses.

I used to use howies years ago and the quality of product was great especially the t-shirts which lasted ages.

I can’t comment on sizing or speak from recent experience but I was a regular of howies clothing for a while and shopping with them was fine. They’re still around so they must be doing something right.

What happened? Sizing used to be 'OK' now my kids can't even get in XXL pricing is way over the top for what it is and the CS team couldn't care less, shame they used to be great. Last time i buy anything from howies, I suggest you do the same.

A shadow of the original company. Price was always high but so was quality. No longer. After being bought out then sold etc etc this is no longer the Howies of old. Sizing is definitely inconsistent, materials no longer robust. Customer service in denial because they know no different. I do.

Great product with solid quality levels. Sizing can be varied, with some jumpers and sweaters being baggy or tight in the same size range - might be a good idea to give an example frame/body size and fit for the products.

Regular sales are the best time to buy products. Some items at full price are overpriced for what you are getting, however other items are incredible so can be a little bit of a lottery - generally good however.

This is a company with a great ethos. Their order and delivery service is good. The products that arrived were always as described. I really, really really wanted to support them, so I bought about 8 items from them over several years.

The big problem for me is the fit, because none of their clothes fit me at all. For reference I am 5 ft 4, around 60kg, and a size 8 to 10. The fit problems are twofold:
1) Their tops are cut far too short, so they barely reach below the belly button. As a result the t-shirts barely reach the top of my jeans, and if I move my arms then inches of stomach stick out beneath the shirt. Even though I am really short the t-shirts need to be at least 3-4 inches longer in order to fit me, and frankly it would be better if they were a full 6 inches longer. But if you want a cropped t-shirt or top then I recommend them!
2) Their skirts and trousers are cut for people who are straight up and down, i.e. their waist size is basically the same as their hip and bum size. I am not especially curvy, but on my their skirts and trousers are far too big on the waist, with many inches of spare fabric. As a result the skirts ride up, and the trousers gape unattractively so that you can see right down my bum.

Overall, I think Howies clothes will fit you well if you are either a maximum of 5 foot tall or want cropped tops, and if you are straight up and down with no waist at all. If you are a woman and are not that shape then their clothes are not going to fit you. Frankly, I suspect girls would be better off buying their men's tops in smaller sizes, because they seem a lot longer.

Can't fault customer services or the ethics of the company (so 3 stars), but the sizing is completely messed up these days: a large is now more like a medium. I have Howies tees from a few years ago that are L and some Medium and a large jacket that still fit me today (yet Howies insist nothing has changed). Any new tees marked as L I have had to sell as they are mis-sized badly. I just bought a L/S shirt which I thought would be fine as a large, but the sleeves are too short and it barely comes to my belt! The shirt is a small-medium at best, nowhere near being a large. Great company in itself, but it's too much of a wild gamble trying to get something that isn't too small these days. Howies used to cater for adult outdoor types, now I suspect the company is aiming for the young teen market size-wise.

Howies clothes was once a cutting edge eco company. T- shirts were fantastic and the styles were unique. Since the closure of their carnaby store in London a few years ago, the drive and unique character of the clothes have been lost - as one reviewer remarked the clothes look similar to what NEXT would sell. I think they have lost there way with the limited range they sell. Areas of strength are underwear and the nom nom chocolate and weaknesses are all the other clothing areas. I don’t really know who Howies appeal too now as the clothing range is very bland.
