Investing was easy once I had got my profile sorted, but I did get no response to a query about which category of investor I should pick. I guess I'll see how well the system works going forward.

Good dealflow despite being a…

Good dealflow despite being a Crowdfunfing platform.

Sometimes there are opportunities that apparently look well, but they offer investors common shares in overvaluated rounds with huge prefer stacks above that make it really difficult for the regular investor to get an upside. However, occasionally, investors get the opportunity to get prefer shares at decent valuations, or common in initial growth stage rounds, where valuations are still low. So it is possible to get some decent deals in a year.

Good way to invest in startups

Good way to invest in startups. A few thing to consider... Minimum fee is currently £5 so for investments less than £100 perhaps another platform like Freetrade might be more appropriate. For the last few years Crowdcube have introduced an uplift clause which at 5% of any realised profit is manageable. Biggest point however is that Crowdcube act as a platform and are dependent on the information provided by the company seeking investment. There have been some brilliant opportunities on here such as Mous and WhatThreeWords for example. However I have seen several unscrupulous pitches using erroneous science which will never generate a return. So please do your homework as the way Crowdcube works cannot guarantee that every pitch is viable. Last point, some good companies will also fail at this early stage. I have lost all the investment on two out of the twelve, but that's the nature of this game. Have every intention to continue to use Crowdcube for the foreseeable.

The real problem isn't that startups fail — it's that there's no way out even when they succeed

I've made nine investments through Crowdcube over several years — ice cream brands, restaurants, insurance, engineering firms. One went into liquidation. Here's what I've learned that no pitch page will tell you.
The deeper issue isn't failure. It's that even the successful companies offer no realistic way to ever get your money out. Crowdcube heavily promotes cafes, gelato makers, breweries and restaurant groups — charming consumer businesses that feel safe and familiar. But think about what you're actually buying: a tiny, non-voting stake held through a nominee, in a private company that will most likely never IPO and never be acquired. A restaurant group can trade profitably for twenty years, open site after site, and your shares remain worth precisely nothing to you, because there is nobody to sell them to. No secondary market. No dividends. No exit. In my opinion, the marketing — with its imagery of backing "the next big thing" — creates an expectation of eventual reward that the structure of these investments almost never permits.
Meanwhile, each new funding round dilutes you further, and you'll notice the same companies returning to the crowd again and again — which, I've come to believe, often says something about their ability to raise money anywhere else.
When one of my companies collapsed within months of its raise, I looked closely at the Due Diligence Charter. My honest reading: it's a document that describes a review process while carefully disclaiming responsibility for nearly everything that matters — valuations, forecasts, business plans, future funding. It reads like protection; in my experience it functions like a liability shield.
Credit where due: the platform works smoothly, EIS paperwork (eventually) arrives, and the tax relief is real — in fact, it's done nearly all the work in my portfolio. Which is rather the point.
My advice: if you invest, treat it as a donation with a tax rebate attached. Only put in money you'll never miss, claim your EIS relief immediately, and before investing in anything, ask one question the pitch page won't answer: who exactly is ever going to buy these shares from me? For most companies on this platform, in my view, the honest answer is: nobody.

The performance about supplying KYC stopped my investment for some time. I don't have to re-verify with my stock brokers and don't want it with Crowdcube.

Hi Howard,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Under FCA FCG 3.2.5 Crowdcube must conduct ongoing monitoring, including keeping document, data and information up to date.  Under the JMLSG Guidance, checks should be refreshed when certain trigger events occur.  Therefore Crowdcube performs checks each 12 months when a further transaction is attempted.

Our processes align with the UK anti-money laundering regime, which includes UK legislation, FCA Handbook rules, and Treasury-approved guidance from the Joint Money Laundering Steering Group (JMLSG) (https://www.jmlsg.org.uk/guidance/current-guidance)

Easy process

Easy to carry out the transaction, very clear instructions. Very good and clear information for people new to the platform so there are no surprises.
