A fabulous purchase at very reasonable…
A fabulous purchase at very reasonable price for an obviously well pruned and managed plant of 12 yrs sent in custom packaging roots still moist after 2 to 3 days travel well pruned I expect good recovery and dense regrowth this spring it will take pride of place in my sisters garden as it enjoys spring and autumn I expect further trunk and root growth and hopefully a spectacular mini tree in 3 to 5 more years thank you I’m already anticipating a fresh purchase of one or two more challenging trees for indoors .

Yesterday I received my delivery from…
Yesterday I received my delivery from Bonsai Direct:-
Leptospermum Scoparium Outdoor Bonsai | New Zealand Manuka Tea Tree
It arrived on time and was well packaged
I have used Bonsai Direct before and have usually been pleased with their products and
service but unfortunately this time I was rather disappointed.
Although this tree was “on sale” at £130 it arrived watered but looking rather desiccated and
ignored. The confusion of branches shown here is towards the top and is indicative of
neglect. [cannot attach file]
I think I can revive this poor tree over time but there is no way it was worth the asking
price. It absolutely smacks of being left in a lonely corner with hardly any attention in the
last couple of years and I am rather annoyed at Bonsai Direct as I thought I could rely on
their quality.
I shall therefore have to reduce my score to three stars for this enterprise. I feel a bit let
down and, what is worse, their bonsai care is not up to the high standard I had expected.
You go back to a company because they have fulfilled or exceeded expectations - in this
case the opposite is true, and I am sorry to have to report that.
UPDATE
Bonsai Direct replied to my review as you can see.
They are obviously quite sensitive to any negativity, and I acknowledge they they have more accumulated Bonsai knowledge than I could ever hope to have.
However, I do have detailed pictures of the specimen as received though I cannot publish them on this site.
I still assert there seemed to me to be a lack of care of this particular tree. That does not necessarily apply to any of the rest of their stock.
Of the thousands of plants in their care, can they genuinely guarantee every plant is looked after one hundred percent?
It would be truly amazing if they could.
Bonsai Dirct assert othwise as is their right, and say it was the same tree as pictured on their website. No doubt this is true although mine had no flowers – not a complaint, just an observation. I guess they fell off.
They imply I should have gone to them first before publishing a review; an attitude I find not entirely helpful because in my opinion they supplied a substandard product and in their opinion they did not so we shall have to agree to disagree.
I have every right as a customer to make an open complaint before consulting the company responsible.
The Tea tree now has a new home, a new pot and a tidy look.
I am sure we all wish it well.
UPDATE 2
In a final twist of irony I got an automated request for a review of the Tea Tree in question offering a place in a draw for a £50 voucher. I would hazard a guess I won't be winning that one;)

We do, however, feel it's important to clarify a few points for anyone reading your review. The tree you received is the exact individually photographed bonsai shown on our website, so there should be no surprises regarding its structure or branch arrangement. New Zealand Manuka Tea Trees naturally have a rugged, informal growth habit, and this particular specimen was selected because of its mature trunk movement and character rather than a refined canopy.
We certainly reject the suggestion that the tree has been "ignored" or "left in a lonely corner." Every bonsai in our nursery is watered, fed, monitored and cared for throughout the year. This tree was healthy, actively growing and carefully prepared before dispatch. It was also well watered prior to packing, as you acknowledged.
While we appreciate that styling is subjective and every bonsai enthusiast has different preferences, a more open branch structure should not be mistaken for neglect. Bonsai are living trees at different stages of development, and many collectors prefer specimens that allow them to continue refining and developing the branch structure themselves.
Had you contacted us directly, we would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss your concerns before a review was left. Customer satisfaction is very important to us, and we are always happy to offer advice or find a suitable solution if a customer is genuinely unhappy with their purchase.
We do hope the tree continues to develop well in your care and that, with time, you'll come to appreciate the qualities that made us select it for our collection.
UPDATE-
We'd like to reassure both yourself and future customers that our previous response wasn't because we are "sensitive to negativity." We absolutely accept that not every customer will love every bonsai, and we receive constructive feedback with appreciation. Equally, we feel it is only fair that we are able to respond where we believe there are factual inaccuracies about the care our trees receive.
We fully respect your right to leave a review at any stage. Likewise, we have the right to explain how our bonsai are grown and cared for, particularly where it is suggested that a tree has been neglected. Our team work incredibly hard every day, watering, feeding, monitoring and caring for thousands of living trees. Whilst no nursery can honestly claim that every single tree receives attention every single minute of every day, we can confidently say that every bonsai is cared for to a very high standard and none are "left in a lonely corner" or ignored.
Regarding the flowers, you're quite right that they had dropped by the time you received the tree. This is entirely normal for this species at this stage of the season. The absence of flowers was therefore expected and not an indication of poor health or neglect.
We're genuinely pleased to hear the tree has settled into its new home and that you've enjoyed repotting and styling it. One of the pleasures of bonsai is that each owner brings their own vision to a tree, and we sincerely hope it continues to thrive and gives you many years of enjoyment.
