‘Family’ business that “regrets” giving a cancer patient one extra week & refunded £8.36 less than they confirmed in writing

I’ve never left a negative review before and would much rather this had been sorted privately. But Wallfillers’ reply to my partner’s review makes claims about me that their own correspondence contradicts, so here is my account as the purchaser. Order 1000468639.

They say the 14 day return period had expired when I contacted them. It hadn’t. The item arrived on 20 May and I rejected it as not matching its description on 2 June. Their own email of 17 June records it as “Return request received: 2nd June (Day 13)”.

They say “the purchaser advised us that she was unwell and awaiting an operation” and that they extended the return window with that in mind. The extension was granted on 17 June. The first time anyone told them I was unwell was 30 June, when my partner emailed to confirm the item had been posted while I was in hospital having brain surgery. Neither of their two extension emails, 17 June and 19 June, mentions my health, because they knew nothing about it. They extended a deadline by a week during a dispute about whether the item matched its description, gave themselves credit for compassion afterwards and have now publicly said they “regret extending the return period”. They needn’t. There was no compassion to regret.

I want to be clear about what that week they regret actually covered. At the end of June I was in hospital having a tumour removed from the base of my skull, being treated as an aggressive cancer. The email that told Wallfillers I was ill was my partner confirming a parcel had been posted, so it would be one less thing waiting for me when I came round. They never replied to it. The refund landed short within a fortnight of my surgery. He was the one chasing a canvas company for £8.36 while I was learning to get through a day again. Wallfillers’ public response to all of that is to say that if they’d known how it would turn out, they wouldn’t have given us the week.

They say “the returned item was refunded in full”. Their email of 17 June says “a full refund of £102.41 will be issued to your original payment method. This includes the full purchase price and the outbound delivery charge (£8.36)”. Their refund notification says “Total amount refunded: £94.05 GBP”. Their reply does not mention the £8.36 at all.

They say they stopped replying because the matter was concluded and the later correspondence “came from the reviewer, not the purchaser”. Both halves of that are wrong. The emails of 15 July and 28 August pointing out the shortfall were sent from my account in my name, with their own refund confirmation quoted back to them and the refund notification attached. Neither got a reply. A matter isn’t concluded because the company owing the money decides it is. It’s concluded when the money they confirmed in writing has been paid. Choosing to be finished with a complaint at the exact moment the evidence of their mistake lands in their inbox isn’t professionalism. It’s convenience. My partner’s email from his own address on 20 July, a general enquiry to test whether they were ignoring us, was answered on 21 July. He explained what it concerned. Nothing since. They call that correspondence confrontational. A customer quoting your own email back to you and asking for the balance is not confrontation. Ignoring her for three months is.

On the artwork itself, I felt the colours didn’t reflect what was advertised and said so within the return window. Another customer’s review on the listing, marked helpful by four people, said the same. That is a dispute about the description, not a “personal expectation of only blush pink”.

What remains is simple. They promised £102.41 in writing, paid £94.05 and have now spent more words explaining why they shouldn’t have been understanding towards me than it would take to pay the difference.

Their reply opens by saying they treat customers “fairly, honestly and with understanding”. The dates and quotes above are theirs. Readers can decide.

If you’re reading this deciding whether to order, the product isn’t the point of this review. What you’re buying is how a company behaves when something goes wrong. When it went wrong for me, they paid less than they’d promised in writing, ignored a customer with a brain tumour for three months and then came onto a public review site to say they regretted the one small decent thing they’d done. That’s who you’re dealing with.

This isn’t a threat and I’m not bargaining over a review. If the £8.36 is refunded I’ll update this to say so. Three emails went unanswered for three months. One public review got a reply within days. They’ve shown me the only channel they answer on, so this is where it stays. They’ve had my email address since May, they've known exactly how to end this and instead they’ve chosen not to. That in itself tells you more than this review ever could.

In the grand scheme of things, we do not believe that continuing to argue publicly will achieve anything useful. Given the incredibly difficult time you have described, a public argument is the last thing needed.

We have already outlined the timeline of events in our response to your partner’s review, and those records remain unchanged. While we stand by our previous response, we do not wish to engage in a back-and-forth public dispute over dates and figures. We clearly view this situation differently.

As an online business, transactions are naturally anonymous. We do not ask for or expect details about our customers’ personal lives, just as they may not know what is happening in ours.

We are a family business, run by real people. Like everyone else, we have experienced our own losses, personal heartaches and difficult times, while continuing to fulfil orders and provide a service to our customers.

Our expression of “regret” related strictly to our decision to make an exception to our usual business policies. We felt this was a reasonable gesture, yet it has been disregarded in your partner’s account of events and, in our view, misunderstood by you. We appreciate that you see things differently, but it is disappointing to have a gesture we believed was reasonable portrayed in this way.
To clarify, the exception we made was not an extension of the 14-day period in which to notify us of a return. Rather, you contacted us after the item should already have been returned to us, within 14 days of your return request. It was the returns window itself that we agreed to extend. A full refund for the returned goods was processed.

No one knows what is happening in other people’s lives. “Be kind” is a value we believe in and try to live by, and we believe we acted with kindness in this situation. However, given the way this matter has continued to be presented publicly by you and your partner, we do not believe further discussion will achieve anything constructive. For that reason, we will leave our response here rather than continue to debate the matter publicly.

We sincerely wish you the very best with your ongoing recovery and future health.

Returning is not made easy!!

Received my picture, unfortunately i didn’t like where i was going to put it, nothing wrong with it just wasn’t suitable which was fine, the reason i have given it 3 stars is because returning it was not easy!! No clear instructions of what to do , thought they might send a returns thing to scan at the post office, but no you have to write order number etc put in box , label it and then sort out a courier or I took mine to the post office and then the cost to return was expensive!! £15 and that’s for the smaller size canvas , anything bigger will cost nearly £24!! For this reason I wouldn’t buy again as returning is a nightmare!!
