Real relationships, both with the farms and our customers, are essential to Rare Tea. This is what we believe defines direct trade.
We focus on quality, sampling the finest and only selecting the best: our range is small but carefully chosen, seeking out tea-gardens and farmers crafting the most delicious leaves. We are extremely lucky and proud to work with unique farms producing extraordinary tea.
Some of our tea is very rare, with only a few kilos produced each year. Others can be grown on a larger scale. All of our tea is crafted by skilled men and women on independent farms, not industrially processed by large agribusinesses. We buy harvests from farmers, not a commodity from brokers.

These teas are of the BEST quality, at totally fair prices. Ethically grown and harvested, with some money going towards education. I want a *good* cup of tea, or else why bother?

I have purchased tea and teaware from them, both of which have been a joy to consume and use.
Pricing is competitive, offers are great and delivery is quick with good communication in case of any issues. Highly recommended!

Excellent range of teas
Excellent range of teas backed by good descriptions. They're not the cheapest, but they are committed to paying - directly - their suppliers a decent amount. I get why they don't work with Fairtrade (only 10% of a product needs to be fairly-traded to qualify) and it's great Rare Tea also help via a linked charity, albeit it's not clear from company accounts what percentage of revenue is passed on to the charity. The gushiness of emails can be a bit much, but that's a minor quibble. Overall, some lovely teas worth buying again and again.

Henrietta has written a book (Infused Adventures in Tea) where she explains in a bit more detail why she stopped working with Fairtrade. It stems from the fact that 80% of what we were raising went to the organisation and only 20% to the farmer/tea community. She founded Rare Charity to give a direct percentage of our revenue (never less than 1% and up to 7%) to tea communities. It is not based on profit which can be manipulated, but straight revenue. Rare Charity is founded on the model where 80% of revenue goes to the work of the charity and only 20% on admin.
Sorry about the gushiness – that's the Rare Tea Lady - maybe you shouldn't read her book!

Beautiful products from a wonderful company
I have just received the prettiest tea strainer that will grace my tea table and be a special treat to use. These little things do make a big difference! A Rare and Excellent Find
Finding the teas from the Rare Tea Company has been a real pleasure. I have taken on board their advice that they give for preparing and drinking tea and since then I enjoy the delicate flavours of premium teas every morning at approximately 25p a cup. The Rare Tea Company also does valuable support work for the tea workers and their families so that their livelihoods can be maintained, their children educated and the world can continue to enjoy these specialist products.
