I used to work for practice plus group…
I used to work for practice plus group and would not recommend any of my loved ones get treatment at one of their hospitals. Dirty, overcrowded, poor quality doctors, complications and poor systems all mean there are lots of bad outcomes. Please don't be tempted. Protect yourselves and your loved ones by refusing these hospitals.
Not for me
I accompanied my daughter last Saturday, (8th of November), to Emerson Green hospital, Practice Plus. I am not a fan of private medicine, but understand that the NHS has to farm out patients, to bring down the waiting lists. Also I was interested to see if paying for your health care was worthwhile. Oh dear, if I had to pay for that experience, I would be ever so disappointed.
We believed that the appointment had been made to introduce the new consultant gynecologist. He demanded to know what my daughter wanted, and why she should benefit from his largesse. She explained her story and journey to him, and it was all deemed irrelevant. Mr. Whittaker explained that he was refusing the operation, because he could, and he had done thousands of hysterectomys, and was the highest consultant that we had ever met. Also, why should she have the operation just because she wanted it? Then He threw in a bit of fat shaming, apparently his hospital does not 'do' fat. Then followed up that logic by declaring that if he did do it, all the women of Bristol would want one too. If I lived in the city, I would not presume to know what the women living there would want. But I could hazard a guess, that what they would not want, is a misogynist wielding a scalpel.
I did not want my daughter to have an operation, if there are other alternatives. So I am happy with the outcome, and delighted that we will not have to return. I suggest that taking along a male companion, may prevent the bullying.
I have given two stars, as the hospital is conveniently situated on the outskirts of the city, with ample parking. It seems clean, the facilities are adequate and the receptionists are perfectly pleasant. However, I cannot recommend this place, as I don't dislike anybody enough to do so.
Definitely NHS & not a private hospital
PPG, Shepton Mallet. I phoned the call centre so that I could pay for an appointment to see an Orthopaedic surgeon because I had been told by a physiotherapist that I might have some bone damage in my hip. The call centre told me that the surgeon didn't do afternoon appiontments & the latest in the day was 11h15 which I accepted. The call centre took every detail they could think of about me including my height & weight, why? When I arrived at Shepton my immediate thoughts of the place was a NHS & not a private hospital, there wasn't the ambience of the Nuffield at either Bournemouth or Taunton or Circle [BMI]at Poole or Dorchester. There wasn't even any free drinks which I expected but they did have a cafeteria where you could buy food. After being kept waiting for over 20 minutes past my appiontment time I enquired as to why was I still waiting. The answer was that the surgeon was still dealing with other patients, that's when I realised that even paying for an appointment does not guarantee that you will be seen at the agreed time at a PPG. When I finally saw the surgeon I then found out that the call centre hadn't bothered to do their job properly & hadn't bothered to obtain the xray/image of my hip. I eventually managed to locate where it was & not any of the PPG staff. I finally finished with the consultant about 15h30 in the afternoon which I thought was strange because the call centre told me he didn't work in the afternoon. One thing he did stress to me was that if I needed to have a hip replacement in the future was to use the NHS & not go private, that's not the right thing to say to someone whom is paying for the consultation. The whole attitude & general appearance by all the staff & initial impression of the facilities was NHS not private, so if you decide to go down the route of paying for your health is to stick with the likes of Nuffield, Circle & Spire for treatment where you are treated like a fee paying client & not just another number on the conveyer belt.
Please just answer the phone.....!!
Just spent 40 plus minutes waiting for my call to be answered in High Wycombe....according to the recorded message, apparently "my call is important to them"....but not important enough to answer..
Pathertic service from a private company which appears to have adopted the NHS "not my responsibility just give us more of your money, culture", rather than bringing the private sector culture to the NHS
Very poor.
Initial consultation with full medical details resulted in decision for bilateral knee replacement. Ten weeks later, with the same medical information, PPG changed its mind (probably correctly so). Ten weeks of wasted time and stress. PPG does not return phone calls, reply to online contact form, or answer email.
Unbelievable how quick professional…
Unbelievable how quick professional understanding and a lovely clean place and hospital, i have been in and out since May and had a full knee replacement the service the staff the surgeons and nurses should be rewarded it was lovely, on a negative it’s a shame the whole NHS Doctors Surgeries and Hospitals are not like this.
Outstanding Care and Professionalism – Knee Replacement Surgery
I recently underwent knee replacement surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital Birmingham, and I can honestly say the care I received was exceptional from start to finish. From my first consultation through to discharge, every member of staff went above and beyond to ensure I felt comfortable, fully informed and supported.
A huge thank you to Mr. Dehne and his surgical team. The surgery went smoothly, and I felt reassured at every stage by their calm and confident manner.
The nursing staff were truly amazing - compassionate, attentive and so patient. I’d especially like to mention Sue, Natasha, and Emily, who were absolute stars. Their kindness, warmth and professionalism towards not only me as the patient, but also my daughter who accompanied me, made such a difference during my stay. Nothing was ever too much trouble and they always had a smile and encouraging words, even during the busiest moments.
The hospital itself is modern, clean and very well-organised, with a real emphasis on patient dignity and care. My room was well equipped and comfortable, including an en-suite bathroom. The atmosphere throughout the hospital was calm and every staff member I encountered treated me with kindness, respect and genuine care.
I’m deeply grateful to everyone at PPG for giving me such a positive experience during what could have been a very daunting time. Thank you all.
Ongoing complaint
I had surgery at Practice Plus on 27/09/2024 and have been left in ongoing pain ever since. I’ve only ever asked for help and clear answers about what happened, but instead I was labelled a vexatious complainant.
In truth, I feel they have been vexatious towards me — leaving me in pain, without answers, and treating my distress as a nuisance rather than a cry for help. Patients deserve honesty, compassion, and respect, not dismissal when they’re suffering.
Ilford / Hornchurch practice
We have to deal with Ilford but are seen too by Hornchurch, this is the worse service I have known the receptionist at Ilford is rude, they do not pass on the information to our reffered NHS or to our NHS Doctor, and even had the audacity to say that this is an issue they have in house, who says private is better than NHS, try ringing them by the time you get through you would of had an NHS appointment, what an absolute shambolic service, should be struck off as a NHS back up !!
Surgery for Femeral Hernia
Had surgery at Practice Plus hospital in Birmingham.
I would describe my experience as 5 star; it could not be faulted from the chap who met me in reception and showed me to my room to all the staff who took care of me on the ward and in the operating theatre.
Nothing was too much trouble, the care was excellent, every step was explained fully, and I was discharged with fully detailed clinical summery.
The facilities are 1st class, i believe it is a fully refurbished hospital.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hospital.
Very pleased with recent cataract surgery.
My wife and I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes, via the NHS, and we are both very happy with the results, and cannot believe the difference and improvements to our lives this has made. From the point of referal by our optician to the point of getting the op took only 6 weeks. The staff were friendly, very thorough and conscientious. One tip I would say is get a morning appointment if you can as it gets busy in the afternoon. One small complaint is that it can be difficult to get through on the phone, should you need to, as the switch board seems to handle calls for many departments. Wishing your team all the best. Denis and Christine Robinson.
Dupytrens hand surgery
Dupytrens hand surgery went well, with sufficient local pain relief. Problems started after 1st post op assessment. Sent home with inadequate supplies of replacement dressings, so when I tried to redress it ( not easy with one hand) I had to buy more, which turned out to be the incorrect ones. Wound got infected, so on next assessment it looked awful, weeping badly and extremely painful. They wanted to go ahead and take the stitches out anyway WITH NO PAIN RELIEF. I REFUSED. AN ARGUMENT ENSUED. Eventually, the clearly annoyed consultant reluctantly agreed to numb the hand, and most stitches were taken out. No anti biotics were given despite asking 3 times for them. They took a swab and I was told to come back in 5 days. Wound got worse, and more painful, so I visited my local GP's nurse who redressed it and got the doctor on call to prescribe anti biotics. These seemed to work, as by the next hosp asseasment appt the wound looked much better and the remaining stitches were removed. The hosp nurses were not happy that I had been to my local GP nurse, but I couldnt believe they were content to let me go 5 DAYS with an infected hand. Swab test had revealed 2 types of bacteria, so different anti biotics were prescribed, and I was discharged. My advice to those going through this, or a similar procedure. ..question everything; ask for adequate supplies of dressings; seek support from local GP/ nurse if unable to re dress properly; insist on pain relief if the pain of stitch removal is unbearable. (Two patients before me had already passed out !)
I had Full Hip & Knee replacement 9 months apart
I had Full hip replacement 26/11/2024 & Full knee replacement 08/09/2025, both were carried out by Dr Alistair Scott Parker.I cannot give enough praise to Dr Parker & the entire Team at Practice Plus Southampton.Excellent care during & post op. Warm and Caring Anaesthetists Geoff & Steve
I will always be so grateful to Dr Parker for changing my life twice over.Follow the expert's advice and you will make a full recovery.Rehab is key & listen to your body
Barlborough Hospital is absolutley by…Shaun Plunkett
Barlborough Hospital is absolutley by far the best hospital I have ever had dealings with - and there has been a few.!!!!!!
My latest stay was my third and it never fails to meet all the standards you would want to experience when having surgery.
All the staff are superb from walking in the building to leaving, the level of care you receive is second to none in every single department. Staff are super professional, helpful and above all else friendly and down to earth. I would like to add a particular special mention for three people whilst I was there, firstly a lovely lady named Karen who was a care assistant on my ward, secondly a guy named Steve in the Anaesthetic Department, and thirdly but by no means lastly - Richard Jackson.
All three members of staff are an absolute credit to themselves and your organisation, absolute stars in there own rights and a definite five star performance in a highly pressurised working enviroment.
Long may this shining star in the healthcare sector carry on to perform on this very highly elivated level.
Looking forward to my next visit in February, I wish all the staff health and happiness from one very satisfied customer.

Appalling
Appalling. I went to the Ilford facilities for a consultation for my left hip including X-rays, which I paid for directly. They noted an unspecified growth, some dysplasia and advised MRI to check for labral tear, which I couldn’t afford to pay privately for right arm so I was discharged back to my GP care, and told he would get a letter from the consultant and I’d get my X-ray results as well by email. That turned into a long chain of emails, I filled forms, sent IDs (plural). It turns out the letter was sent to the wrong postal AND email address they sourced themselves - even though i correctly filled in my gp details on the forms.
As for the X-rays, after involving as well my GP surgery to help me chase and being told they couldn’t be found, finally I got a link to them on 26th August. Unfortunately there’s 3 of the knee but only a lateral one of the hip. The main hip one, which I believe was the one showing a growth, is still missing and they’re not replying my phone calls or emails.
Reported. And if I need surgery I’ll be going everywhere but. Avoid like the plague.

X ray St Marys
I went to have an Xray of my Knee and hip due to constant pain, the place was very clean and tidy, no waiting time went I straight in which was great. Once in the X ray room the young women who tended to my x ray was extremely rude! I had to have my knee x ray first due to being nervous I was finding it hard to put my knee in the correct position against the board, the young woman shouted at me that I was hurting her back? i was nowhere near her? i apologised not really knowing what id done, I was the patient in pain and didn't expect to get shouted at while having an x ray. Disgusting way to treat a patient! I will be looking into to take this further. No bedside manner and shouting is not really appropriate to any patient who is in pain and nervous anyway , so thanks for the horrible experience you have now put me off going again!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A BIG thank you to everyone at Emersons Green Hospital!
I had a laparoscopic mesh repair for a left inguinal hernia yesterday at Practice Plus, Emersons Green. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for better care. Every single person I came across from the reception desk to the nurses and surgical team were friendly, helpful, and made me feel at ease right from the start.
Special thanks to my consultant surgeon and anaesthetist at the cutting edge! 😲 They explained everything clearly, were very professional, and made me feel like I was in safe hands.
The nurses were brilliant, so reassuring and always checking in on me. When the nurse was checking my blood pressure, I mentioned it was probably high because I was feeling a bit apprehensive (first adult surgery and all). She just smiled and said it was probably just my excitement! That really helped put me at ease.
And my theatre nurse was fantastic, she told me she’d take care of everything for me, and that the only thing I needed to do was breathe (as she couldn’t do that bit for me!). That little moment of humour made a big difference.
The whole thing was organised, efficient, and the place itself was spotless and modern. It really took a lot of the stress out of it for me.
All in all, I left feeling genuinely cared for, not just another patient on the list. Massive thanks to everyone there, your kindness and hard work didn’t go unnoticed. I’m very grateful. You all deserve a bonus or at least a pay rise! 😉

This is an unbelievably unprofessional…
This is an unbelievably unprofessional and hopeless "business". Briefly, was not happy with discussions on progress after a TKR. Asked for second opinion and whilst friendly was no better off. Physio was very good but discussed using a local physio if I found one. I phoned and left detailed message that I had found one nearer to home and reasons for cancelling next appointment. Nothing, no reply, zilch! message arrives stating not to forget appointment. Replied to message, then again, nothing. Rang and spoke to a robot sounding woman who, in spite of explaining merely replied - "oh you want to cancel do you". I will never use this group again who frankly "give the impression" to be just taking any patients to lower NHS waiting lists and you are left with the sense they are only in this for the money! Never again. To make matters worse, the anaesthetic, pre op, took 3 attempts then I heard [later] theat person had left and gone back abroad. I still suffer from numbness (due to that alone one year later). The TKR op itself, thankfully, seems to be ok but just ok. i.e. I realise not everyone is skiing or playing golf in weeks after the op but one year and I am still unsure how this will play out. So, in summary: Consultant - "not great bedside manner", explanations - awful. Anaethetist - dreadful, physio, excellent, messaging and phone call to customer service (or whatever they call themselves) ghastly and incompetent.
