NIB NZ IS THE WORST
Trying to get through to anyone helpful via the contact center is an extreme waste of time even when I have called at 8.30am on the dot. Wait a minimum of 40 minutes to around 2 hours on hold only for them to say there's nothing they can do to speed up the claims process on a claim that has been in progress for nearly 3 weeks (12 working days) after already waiting 14 working days for the pre approval first!
Getting a response from anyone via email is even worst. I have sent multiple emails and messages via the NIB app in the past 2 months and have not heard back from anyone at all. Not even the complaints department have responded to provide an update on why it takes a month for a claim to be approved (14 working days for the pre approval plus another 12 days and still counting for the claim)
The standard time frame for claims to be processed is absolutely ridiculous yet also very inconsistent! My dental claim was approved and paid in less than 24 hours yet I am still waiting for my daughters audiologist claim to be approved after already waiting 12 days for the pre approval to be accepted!
All in all, I don't recommend these guys at all. Claiming on everyday benefits seem to be quick yet everything else is a nightmare!
If It were up to me I would be changing providers in a heart beat but unfortunately my policy is paid for by my Iwi which I appreciate but wished we were with a better health insurer.
Summary; NIB lacks good communication skills, inconsistent processing times and time consuming pre approvals which don't help the claims process at all. Unhelpful call center employees that give different information each time you call.

Not even worth one star. Appaling service. You would think with all the negative feedback that they would change. . But no. .wont even answer their phones. NIB private health insurance rate hikes…
NIB private health insurance rate hikes for 2024 are advertised as being “on average” 4.1% yet top health cover appears to have increased by 8.2%? Yet the funds were only seeking a 6% increase approval to begin with!! NIB seems unsupportive of members noticing this and have an attitude of doing what they please. Support is for doctors ever increasing profit margins and other stakeholders benefitting from them. The member out of pocket expenses from an NIB approved Doctor after major surgery was $5,000 and guess what? NOT covered by NIB!!! Please check your % rate of increase as I don’t believe they are open and transparent and only want one on one conversations, that lead nowhere, not an open forum so people can really see what’s happening.

Sent all the the evidence of me going to a hospital for an emergency as I had kidney infection. Sent them 3 times same documents and they are replying “this is not enough evedince” ABSOLUTE JOKE OF THE COMPANY.
Owners probably take all the money for themselves as there’s no payouts at all.
Disgusting you should feel ashamed of yourselves. Some people don’t have medicare and can’t afford hospital treatments, imagine if you were in a serious accident. Bet you any money that the owner just sits there sipping on the cocktails enjoying fooling all the people. DISGRACE!!!

Don't bother wasting your time with NIB health insurance as they won't cover you anyway. Instead, they'll take 4 weeks to review your claim then turn it down at the last moment due to some "loop hole". The customer service is appalling and your hard earned money is wasted. It is clear that NIB has no intention to service it's client base, and is completely disingenuous as an institution.My policies were sold by kiwibank to this institution.I am seeking legal advice now on the best path to pursue on the basis I have no confidence that this institution is a going concern.
NIB, just run a mile! Covers nothing when you need it
I have had to have some cancer treated and thought I was with a good fund (NIB) having been paying them for years.
The wash up, I've had to sell my car to be able to pay the medical bills, NIB have funded 9/10ths of stuff all from my Silver hospital cover and dodged all claims outside hospital by only paying the gaps between Medicare rebate and the schedule of everything, not the 60% they claimed in my joining sales pitch. In my case this has meant they paid about $2000 of a total $15,000 worth of bills (and its still climbing).
Watch out for all weasel words in any insurance PDS about robotic surgery. Despite the robotic technique being mainstream and the usual approach, saving days in hospital for the insurer and government, and having much better recovery outcomes for the patient... NIB refused to pay for the theatre staff to run the robot (100% out of pocket), failed to pay for $3200 of consumables in the operating room (100% out of pocket), and paid less than a quarter of the surgeon bill.
Will never be a member with NIB again, do yourself a Favour and steer well clear, this is the very definition of junk insurance.
Worst travel insurance company
Worst travel insurance company. Do not purchase from this company. From my experience, they not only will not protect you and will do anything not to pay, in the complaints process, I had their staff and assessors will use language to question my character motives. 12 months of my life and hell with this company.
Suspicion’s NIB are broke…..
Had no problems with claims being paid over the last 3 years we’ve been with them. That is up until now. Still waiting for claim sent 27th January 2024 (10 working days). Have left 3 messages that never appear under the ‘Discussions’ section of the App, spent over an hour on phone last week before they answered only to be told claims payments are currently 8 working days.
Goalposts moved to suit them.
Bears all the hallmarks of a company going bust. Will not be renewing & next months premium will be withheld if I don’t get the claim paid.

1. My out of pocket costs for surgery with them was about twice as much as anywhere else.
2. I paid for coverage for years and when I needed the surgery they said it was a pre-existing condition and refused to cover me. IT WASN'T.
Changed cover after that.
3. Takes them weeks to send clearance certificate. Had to chase them up and they still had not done it. I HAVE TO CANCEL MY SURGERY BECAUSE OF THEM!! no surgery for me because they didn't send the bloody certificate. Not happy.
Poor customer service
Poor customer service telling me one thing then telling the hospital something completely different. Delaying my claim for a month constantly trying to find ways to not payout my insurance claims.

Cautionary Note for Prospective Customers:
I feel compelled to share my experience with NIB's travel insurance services tailored for Visa Subclass 600 applicants. Initially, I purchased this insurance and provided the necessary payment. However, a situation arose where NIB disclosed verbally that their policies did not align with the government requirements of Visa Subclass 600. Surprisingly, despite this and requests to cancel the application, NIB proceeded to collect the payment and personal details.
What troubled me further was their response when I attempted to rectify the situation. As the applicant who had completed the online forms, I found myself unable to cancel the policy that had been acquired in the names of my foreign family members. These family members faced language barriers, financial constraints, and limited resources. NIB's refusal to accommodate a cancellation in a timely manner before coming into effect was disheartening.
In addition, my concerns about privacy and security were met with resistance. NIB declined to remove the personal and financial data as mandated by the Privacy Act. Moreover, they showed no willingness to provide compensation for the troubles and inconveniences I had to endure.
Given my experience, I am compelled to advise against placing your trust in NIB. Their actions in this scenario have left me with serious reservations about their reliability and integrity.

Just another greedy company who doesn't care the slightest about their customers. They screwed me over after paying their premiums for years, then when I finally needed some help they decided my condition was pre-existing (which it wasn't) just so they wouldn't have to pay. There is nowhere to appeal the decision. They are a disgraceful company. Give them a miss.
Over past 2 years I have put in claims…
Over past 2 years I have put in claims for extras related to $1000 annual limit on various medical listed equipment. Last year they knocked it back on grounds the payments were limited to 2 line items on the invoice. This year - a new year with a renewed limit, they rejected on the grounds it was within the last purchase date...I complained that it shouldn matter if the purhcase was within 1 year as the limits are renewed annually. I feel the product and contract is not clear, misleading and they are creating obstacles to not pay out on clearly identified benefits.
