Deeper dive into a logfile produced a clue: One of my machines was misconfigured.
Greengeeks support tech was able to look at the mail system log and tell me exactly what connection was failing (resulting in our IP address being banned) which was a huge clue as to what was causing the problem. (One of our machines had its SMTP server connection misconfigured and was failing to log in.)
