I conducted my customary annual car insurance renewal exercise on MoneySupermarket and was directed to City Insurance as the broker offering terms that were amongst the most competitive. I elected to buy the insurance offered in an online process that required me to verify the information I had provided in the MoneySupermarket search. I did this scrupulously, reconfirmed the offer and paid a sum well in excess of £3,000 for the cover.
In the normal person-to-person call that followed to check the information provided, the broker claimed that the answer "Gated Compound" that I had given to the question concerning where I park my car at night was not one I was able to choose. The only options were apparently "On Street", "Driveway" or "Garage" and my response had defaulted in City Insurances systems to "Garage". (I live in a small gated estate with a residents' carpark behind the gates.)
The broker said that, as they had assumed incorrectly that I had a garage for my car (something I had never at any point claimed), the premium would need to be increased by £1,600. Remember that I had already paid an astronomical sum for the cover that was now no longer on offer. As I was not prepared to submit to this tactic I accepted the broker's offer to refund the premium I had in full.
Fortunately, I was able to arrange cover elsewhere on terms close to City Insurance's original offer. But several days have passed and I have yet to see the refund in my bank account.
I find utterly egregious the industry's practice of taking up front payment in full for insurance cover that is at best provisional and leaves open the possibility that the goal posts can be moved after the deal is struck. Public be warned!

Stay away purchased a policy from them it was weekend so I didn't receive no documentation whatsoever I called them on Monday to ask if I was insured they said no cause you have no mot on your vehicle ok can I please have refund he said you have to pay £50 cancellation fee what kind of fee you telling me I'm not insured they thieves scammers
