I rented a car for 10 days. From greetings in the airport, transfer to the carrental office, guidedance, and returning the car has been more than easy. I can not complain about anything. Every single one of the staff has been really nice.

I have only the best things to say about City Car Rental! After I crashed and totaled one of their rental cars, the staff was extremely helpful and communicative. They were FANTASTIC!! They let me know I might have coverage for the accident through my Mastercard (which I didn't know!) and they helped me submit all the the supporting documents to the insurance and were very detailed in the process. I received over $5k from Mastercard and I wouldn't have received a penny without City Car Rental. Very honest, great communication, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Staff there are nice and honest. They are willing to let us stay since our flight is delayed. Thanks to Rimas, a staff who help to return our car, make us complete our process of returning the car.

The facility are well prepared, the washroom is clean and they serve hot drinks for customers. Aisha, a lady who have a nice smile have make my day while we are waiting.

Everything is perfect except they are short of drivers to bring us to the City Car Rental. Therefore, we have been waiting in the airport for an hour. Yet, that doesn’t affect me having an awesome experience in City Car Rental.

This was our first time in Iceland and renting a car there went very well! Trausti help us out, he was very friendly and helpful. The car itself ran fine and had no issues. Price was good overall too. Would rent here again

Le city car rental de klefavik je le deconseille fortement. Très facile à réserver sur internet, arrivée sur place on me dit que je ne peux pas payer la caution avec ma carte car c'est une débit et non de crédit. Bizarrement ça pose problème que en chez eux car j'ai l'utiliser tout au long du voyage et que mon banquier m'a assuré sa validité avant le voyage. Donc ils nous demandent de payer une assurance gold, tout compris à montant de 600€ en remplaçant la caution. Nous partons, quelques jours plus tard nous constatons qu'il manque de l'huile et du liquide de refroidissement... Plutard sur la route, dans un blizzard nous glissons dans un fossé et sommes coincés par la neige. Nous les contactons pour avoir une depanneuse grâce à notre assurance gold et nous disent que ce n'est pas compris dans l'assurance et nous laisse nous débrouiller seul. Aucun soutien de leur part en revenant. C'est 1200€ de frais en plus pour la voiture qui n'était prévue dans le budget, en comptant le dépannage (non remboursé) et l'assurance "gold". Merci car rental !

Dropped off my rental car today at FairCar at the Reykjavik airport. Trausti assisted me today and he was awesome. Super quick and easy return!!!

Amazing experience with Aisha, at the Keflavik office. Very friendly, informative and helpful. We have, and will continue to recommend her to friends and family visiting Iceland.

Decent rental vehicle for a much lower price than the big rental companies in the area.

My one suggestion would be to make it more clear to arriving travellers that they will be picked up in a specific minibus, not the airport car rental shuttle bus. The confirmation email mentions the minibus, but I feel it could be more explicit about the difference between the two buses.

I rented a Vitara and it was more than perfect, I was rainy and windy all the way but overall the weather inconveniences it was pretty good.
Although the car had a couple of dents I had a great experience.
Front desk was helpful and they even game me web pages for aurora forecast and weather.
Dont let them fool you, auroras are super hard to catch !!!

I hope to come back to Iceland very soon.

Dangerous cars putting your life at risk!!!

These are very old cars with extremely high use - over 200,000 km in many cases. These should not be on the road at all. Brakes that don’t work – worn tires that need to be replaced – engines that barely start – check engine service lights on – rusted body damage apparent and who knows what else that cannot be seen.

Do not fall for the low rates -- it is a scam!! You will risk having car stop working in the middle of nowhere... or worse have a flat tire or other mechanical malfunction and crash. The Ring Road and many others do not have safe places to pull off -- the road is built up and drops off steeply to the side. You do not want to have your car die on you in Iceland. Imagine being stuck overnight somewhere in the cold with no shelter other than the car, your car is stuck on the road where it can be hit by other cars, the lights/power have died on your car, and you have no mobile signal. That is the risk you are taking with this shameful company.

Think of the workers as actors -- they seem nice at pickup and in the office. But it is an act so you don't realize until too late that they are giving you a horrible dangerous car that no one would ever rent. If you do end up there and are reading this review while waiting forever (between the pickup, shuttle loading, and further wait at the location), ask to check the kilometers on the odometer and open hood to see engine before you accept the car -- you won't believe how bad. You may be tempted to just go along with it – don’t do it. You’ll end up having to return the car or break down somewhere.

They operate under multiple names, so check the two addresses below to see if your reservation or website has the same address. Check out other reviews and do web search for these names and you'll see horrible experiences others have had.

After posting the review below I received an email from the company requesting the review be removed, and then a few days afterwards when I didn't respond, a bogus credit card charge appeared on my statement for over $700 USD which I will be disputing. DO NOT BOOK HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

City Car Rental - also known as Cheap Car Rental, or Nordic Car (they are all run out of the same office) offered the cheapest prices for car rentals that we could find. However, as we soon learned, this came with numerous shortcomings.

- Waited 1 hour at airport for shuttle pickup
- Waited 1.5 hours at the rental car office before receiving car
- Excessive $3,000 USD deposit required
- Reservation was not in the system and received a different car than reserved (but manager was kind enough to upgrade to a larger sized SUV)
- Car received at 1/4 tank of gas and told to bring the car back at the same level
- Returned car with dirt on it (this is Iceland, after all) and was told that I needed to wash the car myself or face a 100 euro charge, which could have been an issue if we hadn't arrived well in advance of our flight time
- In-person service was cold

Whatever you do do NOT rent a car from city / economy / Nordic rent a car these people are criminals. Google their many bad reviews and avoid at all costs

Would not recommend to anyone. Avoid if at all possible.

The vehicles are relatively old, run down, and in poor repair. We were given a van with a barely functional clutch (manual transmission) and a few days later a replacement that was barely serviceable for our needs. Huge disappointment, wish we had spent more money on a known company.

We rented from City Car Rental through the online website WiseCars and were told that although we booked a car with unlimited miles that because we used WiseCars that we do not get unlimited miles. Total bait & switch! Such a scam! DO NOT USE WISE CARS!! As far a City Car Rental goes, it’s a sub par rental company with terrible shuttle service that runs infrequently Abs is far from the airport. I’m thankful our junky Toyota Yaris did not break down! I will never rent from Wise Cars or City Car Rental again!

They wouldn’t allow you to upgrade to unlimited miles before the rental started so has to pay a huge fee. There is a tunnel in Iceland where there is no sign about paying a toll. City Cars charges a huge fine when they have to pay it for you

We had a terrible experience. Like so many reviews we were scammed by Wise cars and City Cars. The bait and switch here is when you get your voucher it is too late to make changes. You reserve a car with unlimited miles then they change it to LIMITED. And you are hit with another $500 plus charges. Also terrible slow service both picking up and returning the car.

We were among the lucky ones to have a car that didn't break down on the ring road but I was nervous every day that it was going to. There were unsettling clunks and rattles. Windshield wipers were very worn, which isn't good, given how much it rains in Iceland. The floor of the car leaked and our things got wet when driving in the rain. Check-in and return process were painfully slow. Only one shuttle, which was also slow. When we arrived, it took us about 45 minutes to hunt down the driver (there was nobody standing there with a sign for us as promised by Wisecars - what a joke!) The driver on the return trip sat in the driver's seat and would not load or unload our bags or open any doors. DO NOT rent through Wisecars, they add a per km charge which amounts to hundreds of dollars if you drive the ring road. 100% would not recommend City Car or Wisecars. I only gave two stars because our car thankfully did not break down, but I'm sure it will break down on one of the next three renters.

Car was ok. The person checking us in was apparently new. We found out that she left out a lot of stuff about our rental including you only get 100 kilometers a day. Also the wifi that we paid for did not work the entire trip around the country of Iceland. She even asked what our plans were in Iceland and I said we were traveling around ring road. The real kick in the butt was returning the car and having to pay an additional $400 for “excess mileage”. I asked why and the check-in lady said it was because we booked through Wisecars. Word to the wise, don’t ever use Wisecars booking service when traveling to Iceland. At the airport, I started to read all the horrendous reviews for this rental car company. Best to find another company when renting a car in Iceland.
