Be very careful – a vehicle check can become a monthly subscription
I recently discovered, after my bank brought the payments to my attention, that I had been making recurring payments to Checkmycar since December 2025.
I do not recall knowingly signing up for an ongoing monthly subscription and was completely unaware that these payments were being taken.
From Checkmycar's own responses to other reviewers, it appears that purchasing a vehicle report activates a trial period which then converts into a monthly subscription if it is not cancelled within the trial period. The company itself has acknowledged in responses on Trustpilot that this could be communicated more clearly.
Whatever may have been contained within the terms at the point of purchase, I certainly did not understand that purchasing a vehicle check would result in an ongoing monthly subscription.
I have now cancelled the payment through my bank and am seeking reimbursement of the sums taken. I have also asked Checkmycar to provide evidence showing when and how I knowingly authorised the recurring subscription and payments.
I would strongly recommend that anyone considering using this service reads the payment and subscription terms extremely carefully and checks their bank account afterwards.
I will update this review once Checkmycar has responded to my request for a refund.

My experience is the same as other listed here. Advertise a one off promotional price of £5.95 for car checking report, then shortly after they charge for single report a further unauthorised £39.90 was charged to CC. I detected early flagged to CC company and cancelled my credit card.
Communicate to every email provided but no response, and the subscription termination portal said it didn't recognise my email even thought they sent me the car report to same email -hmmm . If it acts, smells and looks like a scam and fraud it is!
It’s a scam
It’s a scam. Reported to NatWest Fraud team. Fortunately I have legal cover & as it’s a credit card they are obliged to aid recovery under consumer credit act. Checked a car for £5 in April they have since taken £160 without authorisation. 1800 plus similar complaints will aid any legal action for recovery.
Auto subscribe you and takes £40
98% of the reviews cant be wrong. They even have a cut and paste response to some reviews. Didnt check the reviews before I checked one car and £5.95 for a one off check when buying a car. Didnt scroll to the bottom, a long way past where it said submit to buy the item - to where it said they would renew after 48 hours to be £39.90 what an underhand bunch of scammers. Luckily my bank picked it up and refused to allow the payment. Now I cant even log on, they say no such account - so I cant cancel any subscription - legally you have 14 days to cool off so they shouldnt be taking money after 48 hours.
I have emailed but they dont respond.
They sent me a report, and it was so poor - some info was wrong - and a lot of info was missing.
Edit: I rang the customer service - he initially said I didnt have a subscription - so I asked in that case why are they taking money out of my account unlawfully - he then said, maybe I entered info in error. What info my correct email address and my bank details - if I did that wrongly its strange I managed to get it wrong but they are both mine, email and bank? He then said I do have a subscription and it was cancelled yesterday - to which I asked in that case why are you trying to take money from me for a cancelled subscription from yesterday, today - he then said I would get the money back in 7 days..... I asked what money seeing as it was only an attempt. He then told me, it was my fault they got mixed up as I put in the wrong information and that meant they took the money. In the end I asked if calls are recorded, he said yes, to which I said I make it clear you arent authorised to attempt to take any money from me and ill be reporting you for fraud now you know you have no consent. He hung up. I dont know what he was not english or Irish. They havent got a clue, its like its just set up to scam people into paying £39.90 every time and hope people dont notice it come out of their bank. People will use this service when at a showroom or someones address - so they know people will be quick and not read the tiny print way below the 'buy' button!
Paid for a one off registration check…
Paid for a one off registration check in January 2025 and have just noticed they have been charging me £39.90 every month since. They have stolen around £750 from me to date. I rang up their help line and they have emailed me confirming my subscription has been cancelled but doubt i'll be able to get my money back. At no point did i sign up to any kind of subscription. This company is a fraud and a scam.
Leak your bank details
Leak your bank details, had an attempted £40 charge and then an attempted charge for a car rental place.
ThIs company is a SCAM!!!
Exactly the same as everyone here, i checked my car once in 2025 for a supposed one-off fee. It's now 2026 and they have taken over £400 out of my account for services never rendered or asked for. This company is illegal plain and simple. Please NEVER BUY FROM THEM!!!
Paid £5.99 for a car check and 2 days…
Paid £5.99 for a car check and 2 days later they have taken another £49.90 for no reason without permission
Fraudulent subscriptio
I purchased a vehicle check for £5.95, believing it was a one‑off payment.
Shortly after, a £39.90 subscription charge was applied without my clear consent.
When I logged into my account, there was no clear or accessible option to cancel the subscription — the only option was to download the report.
Its been 3 months of being swindled £39.90
Fraudsters. Thankfully my bank spotted their scheme.
I have just discovered from my bank's fraud protection service that this company have been attempting take a regular payment of £39.90 after I used them for a one-off £5.95 service. At no point did I authorize any further payments., Thankfully my bank spotted the pattern and did not allow any further payments, but in the meantime my card has been declined by a number of other vendors as failing their fraud checks. I can now see from the many other reviews on here that it's just the way they work. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Scammers charged £40 for a subscription without authorisation
Scammers charged £5.95 for a car check which I authorised. A week later they quietly charged another £40 for a 'subscription' which I DID NOT AUTHORISE. There is no account set up on the website so there is no way to cancel the subscription. This is fraudulent. Disgraceful Irish company set up to scam UK car buyers.
Terrible Exeprience
Terrible. Took money and never sent a report. Blatantly dishonest on the phone. Constantly changing their story when challenged. Very rude. Demanding unreasonable evidence that a payment was made despite acknowledging that the payment had been made. I think this is a very concerning scam and will be reporting to the Garda for fraud as their head office is in Dublin
Hi, Unsubscribe
Hi, I have had exactly the same bad experience of being charged an initial £5.95 and then having an unsolicited “subscription” of £39.90 debited without warning or any permission.
This feels like a scam that should have been stopped by now.
Charging an un cancellable 39.90 charge
Charging an un cancellable 39.90 charge
Avoid this company
I requested and paid for a one-off check on a vehicle I was going to buy and Checkmycar signed me up for a monthly subscription without telling me. I had some trouble cancelling it but managed eventually by calling their customer service helpline.
After paying for one and only HPI check…
After paying for one and only HPI check they started to charge me 39.90 every month for six months without my knowledge or permission. This is the full scale scam. I am calling my bank ASAP. All those legitimate websites should never advertise your company as it gives you some kind of form of legitimacy in the eyes of unsuspecting customer. If I could give you zero stars I would definitely do it.
Scamer
Scamer. Stay away. What for an awful company.
Last month I checked only one vehicle for £5.95, and today I got charged £39.90 for subscription what I never choosed. Steeling money straight away.
I contacted bank immediately, hope to get back my money for this unauthorised payment of these scamer.

this is an absolute scam and should be reported. got in for a single check, paid a discounted amount of £5, a day later they tried charging me £39.0. No reason, just grabbing peoples money, sell a one time only check and then illegally store your card details and then attempt to charge you.

Scumbags are a bunch of con artists
Scumbags are a bunch of con artists, you pay £5.95 for a history check and nowhere does if tell you they will then be taking £40 a month off of you, they just do it. Effectively stealing card info, thankfully my card blocked this fraudulent scam entirely. Do not use this company.
