Cancellation fee unreasonable
Cancellation fee at 10 days out is 20% of the total rental - up to $100. This is totally unreasonable for doing absolutely nothing when you have done all the work in their electronic booking system.
Then, they charged my credit card twice!
As such, this is illegal in New Zealand.
Boycot this company. They are thieves.
Customer service
Prior to picking up the car I was assured by two different people from the reservation centre that I was eligible for a further 10% Gold Card discount even though I had the complimentary car insurance and at least one of them noted this on my reservation but despite many phone calls later they refuse to honour this 10% discount.
Customer service has been very poor:
*Apex has not honoured the Gold Card discount discount that two employees from the help desk said I could have.
*I contacted the help desk four times until I finally got someone to talk to. The previous three time I left my contact number to call me back - No-one did.
*The manager at the Auckland pick-up was very abrupt when I spoke to her and she said that she would email me the clause that said no further discount would be given. She did not email me as promised.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't hire many rental cars but those that I do I have always used Apex because (I thought) customer service was top notch and I always try to support NZ businesses.
Not anymore - the Apex customer service leaves much to be desired and I might as well go to the likes of Budget or Hertz. At least I expect poor service from them so I won't be disappointed.

Incredible Bad service at Greymouth railway station office..we asked to book a vechile on Tuesday at the office but was told you can only book a 7 day hire vechile... Holidays finish this Sunday which would be 6 days ! So sorry no vechile available oy for 7days !! Wake up Apex ..Sooo disappointing. This service reflects on your whole town Greymouth!
Will do anything to rip you off
We used Apex back in 2016 on our last trip to NZ and as we had a good experience decided to use them again which was a big mistake.
The first thing was they downgraded our vehicle which was smaller but they never gave us a refund on the difference which was about $10 per day based on pricing from the website.
The second thing was were told to return the vehicle full of fuel otherwise we would be charge the difference in fuel plus $20. When it was pointed out that the vehicle wasn't full they told us we would be refunded the difference on fuel.
I have contacted Apex twice about these points and have still not had a response so I don't like my chances so be wary of Apex pulling any of these tricks.
Apex are great in Wellngton
Saw some good reviews and price right so hired a car in Wellington central Feb 2022. Great service and changed our drop off to Airport no probs with free shuttle into airport. No up sell like I got from another major hirer . Really impressed. Well done.
Dodgy and not recommended
Dodgy and not recommended. Received an email the night before arriving last weekend indicating we needed to get a taxi from Napier airport to their remote depot rather than a car at the airport as advertised, costing $32. Had to arrange a friend to pick us up from the Apex depot when dropping the car off. Charged us $18 for fuel despite filling up in Hastings prior to dropping the car off in the backwoods of Napier. Not as advertised, expensive and poor service.
No hidden charges, yeah right
Went to drop car back to wellington airport depot and got charged $30 for the transfer back to the airport, which was charged to my credit card 3 days after the hire, plus crazy van driver as well, swerved all over the place, dodgy as.
Rude staff at Apex Auckland Branch
This business doesn't even deserve any star but there is no other option. The staff at Auckland airport branch was very rude and was acting like drunk, with no idea what he was talking about, he calculate all wrong and then only arguing, manager has to come in between and staff realize his mistake, ended up wasting 30 mins + another half an hour for waiting at the airport. Very rough and stupid people, bad experience, don't get into their low cost model, they don't have business due to rude staff and it will be like this. Get well soon Apex, you are no more kiwi way :(

Used this company on recommendation. Booked on line from UK pickup Christchurch drop off Picton after 10 days. Pick up another car in Wellington city centre drop off Auckland airport. Pick up Melbourne airport 7 days later drop off Melbourne airport. Courtesy shuttle buses and service very good. Cars clean good order and service in all offices excellent. Helpful staff and advice sound. This trip was 2016.
Not a good deal
There are some great rental car companies on Transfercar, unfortunately this was not one them. They charged 72 for passengers on the Interislander and through the Interislander website it only costs 56 dollars. The vehicle wasn't completely full when I picked it up (short of 7 litres). When I returned the vehicle and enquired about getting a refund for the petrol, they said that I should have not completely filled it up (no refund for their mistake and they blamed me). I will do my best to avoid relocating cars with Apex Rentals.

We had booked ten days car rental in Christchurch branch and experienced unpleased services in both pick up and return.
1. Dirty & irregular serviced car. So it’s safety issue involved. Car we had been given is a Toyota Corolla, trunk does close properly. Dirty and smell. Spotted all over the car body. Did ask staff help but that even worse to ask. Too unpleased to repeat what their response. Of course didn’t offer any apology and helps. REMEMBER TAKE PHOTOS
2. Highly opportunity you won’t get what you booked. 3yrs new; what marks online won’t be what you get. DON’T pay extra 15d per day for new car; they will give you irregular serviced 5yrs+ car anyway. Plus their excess fee is 2000 so you will add another 200 NZD for insurance
3. Service; Totally nonsenses; not trained for service and non- respectful.
Very poor experience and I will never rent from them again! You won’t get what you pay for.

I was asked to return my LONG TERM rental because it was NOT ROAD WORTHY during my travels. Among other things, the staff are clueless and branch/operations management require further training. They do not UNDERSTAND the terms/conditions of the rental agreement. And, they do NOT follow it.

I rented from Apex in Wellington and drop off in Aukland airport. Had a great experience. It was very affordable and no charge for one way. The car we rented was toyota corollal and handled very well, had minor scratches which was completely fine. Thanks for a great service:)
Great service
We hired two cars from Apex during our one month road trip of NZ, one for each island. Both cars were sound and we had no issues.
Most importantly the service in Auckland was excellent. Having recently returned from France, where there were very aggressive and irritating sales tactics, I was so pleased to have a straightforward and pleasant transaction with the lady at Apex. A great start to our trip. The cars were higher mileage than some I’ve hired, but worked fine so it didn’t bother me. Handing them back was also easy.
Great little car
We hired a car from Apex for our 24 day tour of the North and South islands in February 2017; this was on a recommendation from a friend, who had hired a car from them for a similar trip. We booked 11 months before our trip was to start and also bought the Breakdown Cover and CDW insurance, just to have absolute peace of mind. If you do book this far ahead and intend to take the car on the ferry, you will need to email Apex 6 months before the ferry trip is required to book the ferry tickets; as (unlike Apex) the ferry only work 6 months ahead. This though is not a problem, as the staff at Apex are all really helpful and nothing seems too much trouble.
We had originally booked a manual Ford Focus, but the ones they had in Auckland didn't have parcel shelves, so we got an automatic Toyota Corolla instead & we were so pleased we did - we fell in love with it. It didn't miss a beat for the 24 days, it was economical, comfortable, had an AUX port for our MP3 player, was so easy to drive, especially on all the wonderfully twisting mountain roads.
The trunk was quite large as we managed to pack in 1 large and 1 small suitcase and 2 backpacks; we also had room for coats and a small cool bag for food & beers. Once you get the packing arrangements sorted it's an easy life every morning when you have to pack the car up again.
The car was in really good condition and hadn't done that many Kms when we got it and was a delight to drive. We spent hours in it doing over 5,000 Kms on New Zealand's roads, without a hitch and when a tourist stepped out in front of us unexpectedly, we found the brakes stopped us without incident.
I would recommend hiring a car from Apex and If you want a medium sized car that can effortlessly deal with New Zealand's roads, I would get the Corolla any day of the week and then just enjoy the drive.
worst experience
We used the nelson airport branch and they were terrible. The car we rented didn't have a full tank (about 150km was run on it when we bought it up they promised a refund and when we asked again told us it wasn't policy). Was told to wait as there was another drop off due (wife was trying to check in with 3 little kids by herself). We complained via the webpage and the excuses were appalling refusing to accept we were at fault and basically implied we were liars. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
Bad customer service, bad car
We found some important issues in the car we hire, some of them security related:
- the breaker were either worn-out or improper adjusted
- some of the wheels were close to their ending life
- the speed meter was wrong for almost 10 km/hrs (we could prove it using an app in our mobiles)
- the swipers didn't clean
- kids seat boosters were uncomfortable
- the car alarm didn't work
- the car had lots of dents, scratches, hits, chips. These made the car look bad
- the CUSTOMER SERVICE in Christchurch was terrible, rude attitude by miss Ivy Ding (who didn't want to tell us her name)
I don't recommend this company at all.
Poor Car Service, Rude Staff, Overall Terrible Company
Shuttle Bus to the airport took 25 minutes rather than the said 5-10 minutes on the website. When asked about the unacceptably long times for the Shuttle Bus, one of the staff rudely told us that this service was merely a "courtesy" and we could always take another car to the airport if we weren't satisfied with the company. Of course, this was omitted from the website, otherwise this company would never get any customers willing to have a responsible, punctual company assisting them. Rental car was also very dirty and old, unsuitable for the price payed. Overall, extremely appalling standards of service and attitudes of staff.
Not worth it and appears there are made up reviews
I wanted a cheap but good car rental for Wellington New Zealand. Had a quick search and found Apex Car Rental (also known as About New Zealand Rental Cars and Roadtrip Rentals). The price seemed ok, booking was easy, and transfer from the airport to the nearby office was quick. When I got to the office the car we were getting was almost older than I am. Now I don't mind having an older reliable car but I expect the price to match and it didn't. Then I find out that as I don't have a credit card, only a debit visa card they want to take a $2000 bond! Which guarantees them another $15 a day to reduce the excess and bond. (Friends paid only a little more each day with Budget and had a new Holden).
The car was reliable but there was a shake in the steering wheel at higher speeds, the windscreen wipers had seen better days and there was something rolling around the speedometer each time we turned.
Since coming back I have looked on their website and seen all the good reviews on Tripadvisor and apparently on Trustpilot but after looking at both sites I could not find them. Am I looking in the wrong place or are they making up the good reviews themselves?
