Beware

Booked a rental online had to cancel, be wary when booking, they ask for your credit card details and say pay later, so unless you cancel 14days in advance they will charge you a "No Show" fee in my case $120.00.

I had a great experience in Sydney but they have dropped the ball in Wellington, even though I sent an email to cancel less than 14 days, no one responded only on Mobile message at 8am to say the charge was being made.

They are crooks, don't give them your Payment Details, they say pay on the day, but if you don't cancel within the 14 days. they will ping you, be warned.!!!

Great service at a great price

We were two couples with lots of luggage. We hired a Hyundai Santa Fe which was perfect for our trip. We fit all of our luggage in comfortably and found the car to be comfortable in both the front and rear seats, which was important was we drove from Queenstown up to Auckland, including some long drives. The booking process was easy, especially as it included booking our ferry tickets as a part of the process. We had a small problem with the car and returned it to Queenstown, but it was no problem as they simply replaced it with another one. The service we received when collecting and dropping the car off was excellent and we felt the price was very competitive. The shuttle bus to/from the airports were short rides and very timely. We would certainly recommend Apex.

Avoid at all costs

Have been absolutely shafted by this company. Have been waiting over 5 weeks for a refund after having to cancel due to health issues in the family. Plenty of notice given but week after week a different excuse re refund. They promise a lot but completely under deliver.

Do not use them, totally inept

Rented a car from apex and did 2500km…

Rented a car from apex and did 2500km all around the South Island. We had a late (out of hours) pickup and it was all very well organised. The car was clean and in perfect condition. Dropped it back with no issues. No hidden charges either. Would recommend

Horrible service and personnel intentionally lying to your face

I am extremely disappointed with the Apex rental - already during the Apex shuttle transfer the Apex employee was in rush and because of this he throwed our suitcase out of the car - damaging it to unusable state. Everything was written officially written down in the office and Apex has acknowledge the unfortunate situation and promised a refund when we return the car. After we returned the car - Apex employees made an explicit and repeated promise that they will contact us regarding the refund within a day after our return. Not only they have not contacted us, but they completely ignored email requests for resolvement.

Second issue was even worse - during a trip we had a defect (a Tire) - which, we know needs to be fixed/replaced on the driver's expense and we did so - however, we had an additional Road-side Assistance Insurence paid to Apex and when using it - followed precisely the instruction from the phone call - even so, we were asked to pay additionel large fee on the spot - with instruction that this will be covered by our Road-side Assitance by Apex after return of the car. Situation repeated - when we returned the car, presented all documents, Apex employees had made an explicit promise to resolve the refund day after the return - yet absolutely no contact month after - even after repeated attempts for communication - this is absolutely unacceptable.

Situation now seems very clear - do not TRUST Apex employees, not over phone, not in person. Do not expect they will answer emails. Avoid this disastrous service and do not use Apex rental.

Excellent Experience.

When we started planning our New Zealand trip we reviewed car rental prices and couldn’t understand why Apex were so much cheaper than other more well known companies and that made us a little wary. However we found out that Apex cars are not normally brand new like most of the other companies use but can be four or five year old cars. Other than that everything on offer seemed to be as good as all the other companies. Opting to go with Apex for a six week rental literally saved us hundreds of dollars! We made a simple free phone call from the arrival hall and were picked up without any problem at Auckland Airport by one of their shuttle buses and taken to their off site location. Our agent was a very nice guy called Daniel who went over everything in our booking. We had already opted for a reasonable sized car, wanting some comfort for the many miles we were facing but Daniel suggested a slight upgrade to a larger vehicle. We initially thought “Oh here we go with the upsell” however this did seem to make sense and so we agreed to it. What a great suggestion and good decision, as the comfort and size of our car has been one of the unexpected highlights of our holiday, especially when travelling on some of the unsurfaced roads that you come across now and then. We looked forward to every journey and had plenty of space to transport our stuff around New Zealand. Yes the car is 4-5 years old but is in very good condition and had everything we needed. Thank you again Daniel you have helped to make our trip very special.
(note, this particular car did not have a Sat Nav data card installed but we just connected our phone and used Waze instead)
Apex also arranged our ferry crossing from North to South Island and included it in our rental at no additional cost and we were able to drop the car back at Christchurch Airport which fitted in perfectly with our travel plans.
Our experience of using Apex Car Rental has been nothing but excellent. Thank you again to Daniel who was so welcoming and ended up making our experience that little bit more special!
By the way, did we mention Daniel???? What a great guy!

Great, saved heaps. Nice cars.

Great service and value. I was a bit worried reading a couple of horror reviews about low quality cars. We had a near new Mazda CX-5. It had 80,000km on it and drove like new. It was mostly clean. We wiped off a few finger marks with a wet wipe. For the hundreds of dollars we saved on our trip I was not bothered. We took an uber to hotel and then picked up downtown in Auckland rather than do a blind pickup at 1am because I wanted to see a car before I was committed to it for a month. In the end there were no issues but the day rate was cheaper not getting it from the airport. I would 100% use them again.

Zero Star

I would give them a zero star. However, that is not an option.

Disgusting service.
Was told that I would have to pick up the car at another company as my plane landed at 6.30pm the same time that Apex closed. Closing time: too early when many planes arrive/depart after that time!
On arrival at the other company I was told that there was no record of my booking. There was nothing they could do. However, I could wait over six hours until Apex reopened! No one in the right mind would accept that offer. Therefore, had to pay £60 for a taxi into Auckland. Emailed Apex following day (very angry)! Informed that I should have paid upfront before pick up from the other company. This was not communicated to me only after I had arrived to pick the car up. Nonsensical communication. Took my custom elsewhere: Europcar downtown: smooth transaction/pickup. Would not recommend Apex unless you want to be stranded without transport!!!!

I wouldn't rent with them again

I wouldn't rent with them again. I rented from Queenstown with a drop off at Christchurch Airport. My flight left at 8:35 am and on the contract said I was dropping off at 8 am. I assumed that there would be an after hours drop off since it is an airport location. When I showed up at 6 am to drop off car, I was met by a locked gate and no after hours information. I missed my flight and had to spend $745 for same day tickets on a later flight. I've never rented from an airport car rental with no after hours key drop.

I felt as though Queenstown should have given me the information when I rented with them. When I contacted them, they didn't seem to care. I was hoping to inform them so others wouldn't experience what I did.

I learned my lesson and next time will rent with Hertz or Avis, in the end, Apex cost me a lot more money and stress.

Rental Car horrible after service

Rental Car perfect service, till the moment a other driver crashed in the rental car on a parking lot, driver was kind enough to leave contact details, when we met the driver he provided all details insurance papers and wrote what happened he also informed his insurance company that a claim from apex will come, to date august 14, 6 months after the event APEX has done nothing, not even contacted the insurance company from the driver!, except deducting 2000 nz$ from our account, we even did not receive an invoice for use to claim the excess 2,000 dollar from our insurance company, only once we received a apology letter from Apex, a standard letter but no explanation for the 6 month delay, we reported the accident on 19 February, returned the car in Auckland on 28 February

We booked with Apex Auckland airport

We booked with Apex Auckland airport. No problems with pick up or to take the car to the South Island. We drove the car for 2 weeks between both islands without a problem. Upon arriving back in Auckland, a message came on the screen saying the car was overheating and to pull over when safe to do so, we were on a busy freeway. I called the customer service number and they put me straight onto the Auckland airport, who had a replacement car brought to us within 40 mins, can’t fault the service. Would highly recommend Apex.

Vehicles Fine but Poor Administration and Communication

We used APEX when we visited NZ in Feb/March 2023. First and foremost, there was nothing wrong with the vehicles that we were provided with on our journey between the South and North Island. They are slightly older than with other companies but they are still just the job. I would however say that APEX are very poor in terms of administration and communication. Users of the company need to consider this when booking. We booked a car from Greymouth to tour the South Island and the booking included a ferry journey to the North Island with our vehicle - paid for at the time of booking. After using the vehicle for over 2 weeks, we were about to embark on our journey to the ferry terminal at PICTON when we became aware of some problems with the ferries so we thought we'd give APEX a quick call just to be sure there were no problems with our journey across the strait. It was only when we did this that we found our that APEX had actually failed to book our ferry tickets anyway and there were none available for the rest of that day or the rest of that weekend. We were effectively stranded on the South Island with no accommodation booked and with the North Island leg of our journey about to be significantly impacted upon. We then spent several hours trying to resolve this problem caused by APEX and ended up organising a flight between Blenheim and Wellington for later that day and arranging a separate hire vehicle through APEX on the other side. We eventually resolved the problem and insisted APEX pay for these flights (which they did in fairness to them). But we can only be thankful that we had the foresight to ring APEX on the morning of our ferry journey otherwise we'd have turned up there and been turned away with no time to make alternative arrangements. This was very poor on the part of APEX and they let themselves and us down. Furthermore, we have sent a number of emails to APEX about this issue and they have not replied to a single email. That's very poor APEX and you should reply out of decency to your customers. So, hirers beware that administration and communication are not APEX's strong points.

Bye Bye Apex

Filled the car at the station just down the road before returning it. The pump (BP station) wouldn’t allow any more fuel to be pumped, the car gauge read full but just shy of the F symbol. Apex said it wasn’t full and after we left charged up $50 on our card. We called, they said it took another $30 to fill it up then said they weren’t lying…..I must have missed the hidden reserve tank when filling it up! Bye Bye Apex, not falling for that one again……

Terrible experience and maximising profits

Picked up a car today that was booked by my partner via a 3rd party. Asked attendant if any was paid and they said no. They offered insurance for $200.

30 minutes after taking the car, I spoke to my partner who informed me that we already had insurance when we booked. I immediately called Apex and explained what had happened, and that I had paid for insurance based on the information when I picked up the car.

The manager was unsympathetic and said they was nothing that they would do to help. This was very soon after we had paid them a significant sum of money on car rental.

I strongly recommend against using Apex. Their systems are poorly integrated with their 3rd party booking providers, and they are clearly not interested in helping their customers. They are looking to maximise profits.

The manager told me to add to the review that the attendant told me the price of insurance and the excess. I’m including it here as a follow though and because it demonstrates the complete lack of understanding or care.

Do not use apex if there is a chance…

Do not use apex if there is a chance your international flight to Nz is delayed. 23rd Dec not only was the apex branch closed early they did not arrange after hours collection at fliway which is normal procedure . Apparently they don’t monitor flight arrivals and if your 30 mins late they don’t care and don’t give you access to your booking , phones are off no response .

I was stranded in Auckland with two young kids with no solution or contact point with them, the best day they didn’t apologise , and it was my fault for not telling them I was 30 mins late . Totally unacceptable.

I followed up on the 28th of Dec with apex management and they told me it was my fault and completely acceptable in their opinion that people are left stranded or have to find accommodation at an extra expense for the night and to collect the car when they open the next day. Also told me that three other people had the same issue as me on that day and seemed ignorant to the fact people are paying hundreds of dollars for other options or hotels all because they do not actively manage flight delays . do not use @Apexcarrentals, very poor customer service.

Great price, easy pick up & return, sorted ferry crossing

We hired a Hyundi for 3 weeks to travel both the north and south islands. We found Apex easy to deal with (not by phone from Australia though, even though a toll free number, found it much easier by email). After hours pick up in Auckland was a breeze as was dropping back at Greymouth. Car had a few scratches on it but they made note of them and advised us they accepted fair wear and tear which was a relief as we didn't feel we had to stress as much then. Price was very reasonable. Loved that they organised the ferry crossing for us. Highly recommend,
