Unclear bed allocation, poor facilities and key card deactivated - AVOID
I had a very disappointing stay as a solo traveller. The main problem began with an unclear dorm bed-allocation process. I was not properly told how to identify my assigned bed, but was then told that I could be charged £20 for being in the “wrong” bed.
When I questioned this, I was told that my key card would stop working “from now” by a rude, officious employee called "Megan". Approximately two hours later, my card was in fact deactivated. This made me feel distressed and concerned that I could be locked out late at night, potentially without access to my belongings or basic facilities. I had to hold off using the toilet for hours, ruining my sleep.
I was subsequently sent an email banning me from the property. In my view, this was a disproportionate way to deal with a guest who was trying to understand an unclear procedure.
The facilities also did not meet a reasonable standard. The building had an unpleasant smell in places, the carpets looked dirty and the shared showers and toilets were cramped, dirty and smelly with visible faeces in a toilet bowl. The dorm mattress was flimsy and uncomfortable, and the lockers were very small, making them impractical for larger luggage.
I also found the £3 charge per large luggage item insufficiently clear. Future guests should clarify their bed assignment at check-in, ask about all luggage charges in advance, and check the current locker and facilities arrangements before booking.
Check popular booking conduit websites where the property advertises for other negative reviews, where guests complain about issues including but not limited to the presence of insects, terrible customer service and no AC.
BED BUGS!!!!!
Short version
BED BUGS. BED BUGS. BED BUGS. BED BUGS. BED BUGS. BED BUGS.
Seriously, find somewhere else. I am 18 years old, have travelled to more than 25 countries, and I have never stayed anywhere this bad. We were here on a school trip with around 60 students. We found bed bugs in multiple rooms, several students were bitten, and after being moved we found them again. The rooms were around three floors apart, so this was not just one bad room. The whole hotel has carpet everywhere, which made it even more worrying. On top of that there was vomit on carpets, a horrible smell, smoke in the hallways, extreme heat, dust, mould, dirty bedding, what appeared to be blood on mattresses and what looked like mouse droppings.
Management made it worse. In our experience, they talked around the problem, blamed us and told us rooms had been cleaned when our belongings were still exactly where we had left them. They even suggested moving us into a room other students had already been moved out of after finding bed bugs. Do not just trust that another room is “clean”. Seriously, do not stay here.
Full story
We arrived late in the evening after travelling all day. Everyone was exhausted and all we wanted was to sleep, but the first impression was awful. The hotel smelled bad, the carpets were filthy, the rooms felt dirty, there was dust everywhere, some hallways smelled of smoke and the rooms were unbearably hot. We also saw damaged walls, dirty bathrooms, stained bedding, areas that appeared to have mould and what looked like mouse droppings.
We were tired, so we went to bed. Some of the girls from our school did not get much sleep. During the first night they found bed bugs and were awake for much of the night checking the room and their belongings. Some were already considering going home on day one. They were eventually moved.
The next day, my friends and I found bed bugs too. We complained and asked to be moved to another hotel, but instead we were moved to another room in the same building. Then we found bed bugs there as well. The rooms were around three floors apart. Different students found them in different parts of the building, so this did not feel limited to one room.
The carpet everywhere made it even worse. Once you have found bed bugs on different floors, the last thing you want is to keep being moved around inside the same carpeted building.
We kept asking for help. Reception told us they could not make the decision and that we needed to speak with the manager. The manager was extremely difficult to reach. We called several times and he often did not answer. When we finally spoke with him, we felt he talked around the problem, shifted the blame back to us or said there was nothing he could do.
At one point he told us to call again at around 18:00. We did, but he did not answer. After around an hour we finally got through and were then told it was too late to do anything and that we should have complained earlier, even though we already had.
At another point we were told that our room had been cleaned and checked and that nothing had been found. When we returned, our belongings were still exactly where we had left them, which made us seriously question how thoroughly the room had been inspected.
Then they suggested moving us into a room that other students from our school had already been moved out of after finding bed bugs. We were simply told it was now clean. After everything we had experienced, we had no confidence in that.
Several students were bitten and some had to move to another hotel. Instead of enjoying Brussels, we spent our time checking mattresses, clothes and bags, moving rooms, talking to reception and worrying about bringing bed bugs home.
I understand this is a hostel and I do not expect luxury. I do expect basic hygiene and a serious response when bed bugs are found. This was by far the worst accommodation experience I have ever had. Seriously, find somewhere else. And if you don't trust me, try reading the other reviews.
Severe bedbug infestation and zero customer service responsiveness!
This review serves as a warning regarding a severe hygiene issue at Safestay Brussels. During a recent two-night stay, small black spots (bedbug excrement) were discovered on the bedding. Upon returning home, a bedbug infestation was found inside the luggage. As a direct result, my entire body is covered in severe, intensely itchy bites from head to toe.
Despite multiple formal attempts to contact the hotel management regarding this critical health and safety hazard, Safestay Brussels has failed to respond or acknowledge the issue. The total lack of communication and failure to address a pest infestation demonstrates a severe lack of professionalism and neglect for guest welfare. Booking at this establishment is highly discouraged. It is definitely not safe!
Worst hostel experience
We stayed at Safestay Passeig de Gràcia for 4 nights (booked directly on their website). On our 4th night, we returned around 8 PM to find our assigned beds given away to other guests due to a system error. Our personal belongings (clothes, shoes, towels) were packed into trash bags and left in a corner.
When we approached reception, the staff member was dismissive, rude, and refused to take any responsibility. She told us to move the other guests' belongings (including their underwear) ourselves, stating "It's not my job." We felt extremely unsafe and uncomfortable.
Fortunately, Nicolas at the bar stepped in to help get the beds cleared and sheets changed. However, management later refused to offer any refund or compensation for the distress caused, brushing it off as a resolved operational error. Save yourself the stress and stay elsewhere.
Avoid
Avoid! Absolute money grab! Couldn’t find the place. Then found it to be an underground entrance.
Room on the 5th floor, which was ant the top with the sign 4th floor, one floor above the 4th floor, so wrongly labelled( 2 floors called the 4th floor), unfinished buildings work all the way through, plasterboard dust everywhere, like walking through a building site. When finally found our bedroom there was a bag of collected dirty laundry outside the door just chucked on the floor so we had to step over it to get into our bedroom; the bedroom, en-suite bathroom had not been cleaned, the toilet hadn’t even been flushed, there was rubbish from the previous guests left there, no toilet paper. The beds were not made, I looked through all the other bathrooms in the hallway -there was no toilet paper in any of those either. Told the man in the reception, and even though he looked surprised and apologetic when we returned from a dinner out the room still not had been touched, the bag outside the door stayed there till we left the following morning ( so is very likely to still be there now, dirty bathroom, no toilet paper! No one had attended to any of what I had told the man in the reception! The window had the absolute worst view of the back of the houses in that block. What a hole! Waste of money!!
'Safestay' is not a safe stay!
'Safestay' is not a safe stay!
The place is a hole! They are responsible for me being homeless for the first time in my life because of their unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour! Everything will come out in my legal action against them, which I can't wait! Avoid like the plague, because they are the plague! The fish rots from the head down!
Zero customer service complete attitude. As you hate your jobs so much, why don't you go and get another one and be happy for the first times in your life! I especially want to mention the extremely rude Dennis, Kieran - bad attitude, and Ali. Also the jumped up little blonde hair European girl, you're completely rude and cruel! You know exactly who you are!
Do not rent an apartment with them
Do not rent an apartment through this company's partnerships. They are not professional or trustworthy.
They made me pay the agency fee but provided no support during the contract process. I was initially told one set of costs, but later they changed the terms and the amounts without proper explanation.
Their team offers virtually no customer support and avoids taking responsibility when issues arise. I sent multiple messages and received no response.
I would not recommend this company to anyone looking for a reliable and transparent rental experience.
Budget rooms for a premium price
Safestay Charing Cross, Glasgow: Budget rooms for a premium price.
The Room: It was small. While the bed and bathroom were clean, the floor was dirty and the blinds were filthy. The only saving grace was the large windows that opened, providing enough fresh air to keep the room sleepable.
The Service & Security: The staff seemed more interested in chatting than actually checking guests in and out. We, along with several other guests, were locked out of our rooms by malfunctioning keycards. Crucially, when we asked them to fix it, the staff reprogrammed our cards without even validating our identity or confirming which room number the card was actually for.
The hotel was incredibly noisy, and we were woken up several times every night.
Location & Value: The surrounding neighbourhood is decrepit. Absolutely nothing about this hotel warrants the high price tag.
I stayed at the hotel in Edinburgh.
I stayed at the hotel in Edinburgh.
I'm disabled and asked if I could get a room on the ground floor. Instead I was told that my room was up one flight of stairs. It was actually up 4 flights of stairs which almost killed me trying to get up and down. Therefore I was forced to spend most of the time outside. Because there are only 2 comfortable chairs in the main area which were almost always being used. My appliances kept falling out of my adapter as they are slanted above the bed. So I had to crawl on the floor under the bed to be able to use the only other sockets in the room. Which meant I had no light. It sits across the street from a very loud pub which is open until 3 am. I eventually got myself downstairs to pay £5 for headphones for my phone to see if I could block some of the noise out.But the only kind they had I couldn't use only 1 kind of connecter, that you can't see until you have bought them.
So I only slept about 5 hours total in 2 days. It's Ok if you like a lot of noise and it has close proximity to the town center. Otherwise I definitely wouldn't recommend it and I definitely won't be back.
Do not stay here.
Do not stay here.
Attempted to stay at the Charing Cross location in Glasgow and their system has had a massive data breach.
You will receive emails from their offical email requesting confirmation of payment details with specific information like payment amount and check in/out days that only they have.
These phishing messages also get texted to you using your provided mobile number when you signed up.
Their websites are now refusing log in so there is no way to cancel our booking.
Likely that their whole system is just a phising website.
Terrible experience - bed bug infested!
DO NOT STAY HERE! Before going to sleep we noticed a bug crawling in one of the beds. Turned out it was a bed bug! Upon closer inspection we ended up discovering multiple bed bugs in one bed in our dorm, also some crawling on the walls. When we went to report this to reception, they were not at all surprised and were completely unhelpful in the situation. They told us we should leave the hostel, bear in mind it was 12:30am at this point, with all other hostels and hotels being fully booked nearby and we did not feel safe wandering the streets in the middle of the night to look for alternative accommodation. We asked reception for help to find other places to stay, they suggested ONE hostel which was fully booked! And they made NO EFFORT to find alternative accommodation for us. They gave us a contact card to email them and request a refund, which then took MULTIPLE follow up emails for them to finally respond, despite us sending clear photos and videos of evidence of bed bugs in the room. Do not book here. Absolutely disgusting.
Other cons:
- AC does not work!
- Very thin doors combined with a noisy hostel so you could hear people shouting down the hallways in the night
- Front door to the building was left unlocked, had a random person start knocking at our door saying they had left their key inside.
- Tiny shower where you could barely move inside (I am short and thin and still struggled to move properly), also there are dispensers for shower gel but it had not been filled up.
Violent place raed from Tunisia
People hit me in the hostel and some of their friends
Outstanding service!!!
Am staying at Safestay Holland Park and as always i am enjoying my stay, i am being looked after and the staff are amazing. Great facilities and amazing value for money. I highly recommend:)
Safestay Glasgow cannot be trusted AVOID!!!
I had a booking (made months ago) to stay here on 6th December. This afternoon 6 days before our stay I received an email saying we've cancelled your reservation at your request. I made no such request and I'm livid as after calling them I was told they are carrying out essential maintenance to the room and therefore won't be able to let us stay...no offer of another room, no compensation... nothing!! Avoid at all cost they cannot be trusted. Disgusting way to treat customers
Safestay Barcelona was the worst hostel…
Safestay Barcelona was the worst hostel experience I have ever had. I am a 24 year old traveling alone and they refused to let me stay their because I didn’t have a physical copy of my passport. I did however have a government if and a photo copy of my passport and even went to the police who told me that would be enough to prove identification and sleep there. Not only did they leave me stranded they didn’t give me a refund. They forced me to pay while also refusing to allow me to stay. On top of that the reception stay was so rude it was criminal. The woman Mary if that was her actually name but I think she made it up was probably the most spiteful woman I’ve ever met in my life. She was mean and didn’t even try to help me find a place to go while I was scared and alone. This is a grown woman too… I only hope she finds happiness in her life so she can stop hurting others. And if Safestay wants to improve their several bad ratings they will find a new front of stay and work with their customers more instead of stealing their money.
❌ Extremely disappointing experience…
❌ Extremely disappointing experience with Safestay Warsaw.
I booked a refundable stay via the official Safestay website in March 2025, for check-in in late October 2025. Despite this, the full amount was charged to my credit card immediately after booking – over 6 months in advance – which directly contradicts the company's own booking policy, which clearly states that payment for refundable bookings is only due 24 hours before arrival.
I canceled my booking on September 27th, well within the free cancellation window, and received no confirmation or refund. I emailed the property and followed up multiple times, but received no meaningful response. Even an official complaint to Safestay’s head office was bounced back as undeliverable.
This is not only a serious breach of the company's own stated terms, but also reflects a complete lack of customer service and accountability.
I am now forced to seek a chargeback via my bank and consider reporting this case to the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK).
⚠️ Travelers beware: Safestay Warsaw may charge you far in advance and ignore cancellation/refund requests – even if your booking is refundable.
safestay.com Barcelona is the worst accommodation ever
14 September I booked with cancellation option’safestay.com Barcelona’ from 3 October to 8 October . After many calls and messages asking for checking information (as I needed to leave my luggage and more) and a blanket as now temperatures go below 15 degrees during night and weather forecast was bad, I first received a message unrelated to my questions as follows:

NOTE THAT: WRONG CHECKOUT!!!( same day as check in)
Flexible 2 days?????? what does that mean?
And the second message about the blanket :
“ Hello Marcella,
We do provide blankets in the cold season; however it hasn't yet started here in Barcelona. We can provide an extra sheet if you get cold at night, but as far as for blankets you'd need to check on the date and see if the housekeeping team has started providing them - since it's depending on the weather.Kind regards, Tom - Receptionist at Safestay Barcelona “
After dozens of messages and calls both from me and booking yet no response.
When booking wrote that I like to cancel suddenly they were very happy to immediately send me a message saying that as per policy it was now too late for a refund.
Guess what It would have been possible if they had replied when I questioned them first time.
Conclusion they DO NOT REFOUND ME. Booking doesn’t do anything about it. I’m GENIUS level 3, costumer since long time but this doesn’t matter to Booking.
I will close my Booking account and I recommend you to do the same.
They protect places like Safestay.com instead of long trustful customers. This on top of the damage they procured me of time lost, anxiety and money loss.
Aire acondicionado no funciona hace…
Absolutely disgraceful
Absolutely disgraceful. I booked in advance through Booking.com, travelled all the way to the hostel — only to be told on arrival that they had no beds and didn’t care at all. No apology, no help, no solution — just rude staff who clearly don’t respect their guests. This place is completely unreliable, unprofessional, and a total SCAM. Avoid at all costs unless you want to waste your time, money, and energy.
