Adveni, vidi, et abii. llegue , vi y me fui

Abzocke in Kliniken aud Teneriffa

My experience in Bellevue Hospiten

I spent the worst five days of my life in Hospiten’s Bellevue hospital in Tenerife, with a badly broken shoulder, in Feb 2026. I have never been treated with such cruelty and incompetence.
Screaming in agony, with fragments of broken bone moving about in my upper arm, I was pleading for pain relief. “No pain relief till we have a 4000 euro deposit”, said the interpreter, and thrust a piece of paper into my lap. “Sign there”.
Four and a half hours they left me in agony, till finally a nurse bandaged my broken upper arm to my body. It was primitive treatment. “Thank you. Why did I have to wait four and a half hours for this relief?” I asked.
“Protocol”, was the cold reply.

During those hours I was yelled at to shut up, and otherwise ignored, except when they took me for an X-ray. I am 69, a qualified doctor, and have also experienced the far-from-perfect British NHS as a patient. In all those years I have never met an unkind radiographer. In Bellevue I met three, all yelling at me to keep still. After the X ray they said “That was no good, you moved. We’ll have to do it again”.
“If you are going to do it again”, I managed to reply, “you’ll have to give me some sedation”. They did eventually give me some intravenous sedation, and then I asked when the repeat X ray would happen. “Oh, you don’t need another X ray”, they said.

I then spent 72 hours on a ward, where the nursing care was appalling or non-existent. The “nurses” didn’t help me into bed, or to the toilet, didn’t give me any food, never smiled. If my family had not been with me I can't imagine how I would have survived. The “nurse” who put a canula into my vein had her long hair dangling an inch from my skin, and was chewing gum. Four or five times I had canulas inserted, and they kept coming out because they were incompetently put in. One time when a canula came out the nurse laughed. My “good” arm was covered in bruises, and when I left the hospital I had to plead repeatedly for them to remove the remaining canula.

At night a “nurse” would barge in, turn the light on full, and put something in my drip. I would ask what it was and they would just say “medication”. They neither knew nor cared what it was, and clearly thought it was none of my business to know either. I had given them a list of drugs to which I am severely allergic, and on two occasions they put one of these drugs into my drip. The reaction was terrible to both, and in one case took many weeks to wear off.
The surgery. Oh my god. First they were going to operate on Saturday, so I was on “nil by mouth”. Then it was to be Sunday; “nil by mouth” again. On Monday morning they said “The operation will be at 4.00 pm today”. Imagine my surprise when they turned up at 2.30 pm to take me down to the operating theatre.

“But I haven’t had my pre-med”, I said. “Oh, we don’t do pre-meds”, they said. A pre-med is a calming medicine given before someone goes down for surgery; for obvious reasons. To withhold it is positively barbaric. My bed was on wheels but I had to get out of bed and sit in an ancient, rickety old black canvas wheelchair with defective foot-plates. An unsmiling orderly bumped me along the corridor to the lift, and wheeled me in. The doors closed, and he pressed the button, but the lift didn’t move. He thought this was the funniest thing; the unsmiling orderly now laughed his head off.

When we finally got down to the freezing cold basement, I was left alone in an empty, dusty room. After half an hour I glimpsed the interpreter. “What’s happening?” I asked. “You are going to have an operation”, he replied. “I know - but where are the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the theatre nurses?”
He went. Then the anaesthetist came to get me. He was cold and rude. “Get up”, he said, “and walk into the operating theatre”. I did, with difficulty and in mortal terror. The operating theatre was not white and clean and gleaming. It was old and grey and tatty.

“Well, get up onto the operating table”, he said. Then he put something into my vein that burned like hell-fire. I screamed. “Shut up!” he yelled. “You’re in operating theatre now, no noise!”

I have had general anaesthetics before. The hell-fire is completely unnecessary. I won’t dwell on the next bit; it was unspeakable. I went ‘out’ screaming in pain. Suffice it to say that I woke up, not as I’d naively expected on an orthopaedic ward with specialist post-op care from orthopaedic nurses, but on the same ward with indifferent, incompetent, callous staff. Some of them didn’t even know I had a broken shoulder, or that I’d just had an operation; I had to tell them.

Over the five days I was in that hell-hole, I saw a different orthopaedic surgeon every morning, each for about 30 seconds. All robotic. Hospiten is not about healthcare, only money. No compassion or nursing skills. Greed incarnate.

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs! I went with my 4 year old daughter via ambulance. Interpreter on arrival was rude and abrupt and not at all compassionate or considerate. After X-rays were clear we were told she needed to stay 24 hours for observation. We had nothing with us so I called my husband who was at the hotel to bring us bits for the night. He had our 6 year old son. I was told he had to drop bag at reception only as they would not let my son visit as he was under 12. So my worried husband couldn’t even see our daughter. We were admitted to our room around 3pm. We hadn’t eaten since breakfast and around 5 she started asking for food again. I asked as we had nothing to be told yes it was coming. I continued at ask, it arrived just after 8pm. We were starving and the food was far less than desirable even for hospital food. See attached. We shared the dry bread roll. No observations were done on her during the night even although they had been worried about her oxygen levels. (Her breathing was fine so I did not chase). Breakfast was only a carton of apple juice and an orange. In the morning I was chasing for doctor as my daughter was much better after IV antibiotics, who did not arrive until just before 11am. When the doctor arrived we were told we could leave without follow up or medication, we only needed the medical report. They refused to take cannula off my daughter even after this until they had the medical report. I was chasing this in the hospital and also through our insurance and it took them just over 3 hours to write a simple report. In this time my daughter was starving only having had an orange, lunch came at 1 and we were not allowed anything sooner. My daughter was cold so I asked for the cannula to be taken off or at least detached so we could put her jumper on. This was also refused. On discharge they then said all of a sudden she did need medication and to continue antibiotics which we could get at any pharmacy. We were told told as it’s the weekend many are closed and after arriving back at our hotel we then needed another taxi to the next town to the nearest open pharmacy. All in all a terrible service, food awful and inedible even by hospital standards and an extreme lack in patient care. Avoid at all costs as they just seem to want money.

This review is done to highlight the appalling treatment my wife and family received in this hospital

This review is done to highlight the appalling and inhumane manner in which my wife and our family were treated while she was a patient at Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur, Tenerife.

During an already devastating and traumatic time, the actions and attitudes of staff caused additional and entirely avoidable suffering, which no family should ever endure. The care, communication, and basic humanity shown to us fell far below any acceptable medical, professional, or ethical standard.

On the morning my wife passed away, our family was refused entry to the Intensive Care Unit, despite it being abundantly clear that she was in the final stages of her life. We were subsequently ordered to leave and physically removed, with no compassion, explanation, or consideration for the fact that this was likely to be our last opportunity to be with her.

As a direct result of this decision, we were denied the chance to be at my wife’s bedside as she died. Instead of being informed by a doctor or senior member of staff, we were told of her death via an interpreter, an act that was not only inappropriate but deeply distressing and disrespectful. This moment, which will remain with us for the rest of our lives, was handled with a complete absence of dignity, sensitivity, or humanity.

The manner in which my wife’s body was then treated was equally appalling. She was placed in what can only be described as little more than a bin or container, covered with nothing more than a sheet. This was not a mortuary environment befitting a deceased patient, but a degrading and distressing sight for a grieving family. Once again, rather than being accompanied by medical staff, an interpreter was sent to take us to see her, compounding the sense that responsibility, compassion, and professionalism were entirely lacking.

Of further concern was the conduct of a doctor whose unprofessional, cold, and uncaring attitude was evident throughout. At no point did this doctor demonstrate empathy, sensitivity, or an understanding of the gravity of the situation. Their dismissive manner and apparent indifference to our distress were wholly unacceptable and deeply damaging.

The cumulative effect of these actions has caused lasting emotional trauma to myself and my family. The denial of access to my dying wife, the manner in which we were informed of her death, and the degrading treatment of her body represent a profound failure of duty of care and basic human decency.

I am therefore formally requesting:
1. A full written acknowledgement and response to this complaint.
2. A comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the staff and doctor involved.
3. A clear explanation as to why our family was refused access to the ICU during my wife’s final moments.
4. Details of what disciplinary or corrective actions will be taken to prevent such treatment of other families.
5. Confirmation that this complaint has been escalated to senior management and formally recorded.

This letter is written not only out of grief, but out of a deep sense of injustice. My wife deserved dignity in her final moments, and our family deserved compassion and respect. We received neither.

Thieves - not carers

I needed a simple prescription for me 4 Yr old boy who had conjunctivitis (an eye infection from swimming pool) I knew exactly what I needed from the chemist but I was sent to this hospital for a check up. I was forced to pay 400 euros before I could see a doctor. They said this was a deposit and I would get money back. I asked how much it would cost for the check up and the lady on reception told me 100 euros or less. We saw a doctor who checked over my son which took less than 1 minute. I got a prescription from him and they charged my card 250 euros. I asked why and the receptionist told me that was the price. She absolutely would not refund my card. I feel robbed and this price and service was shocking. Please don't go here. They are thieves - not caring people at all.

Hospiten Riviera Maya

Our experience at Hospiten Riviera Maya following a serious spinal injury was deeply concerning.

After a traumatic accident, a CT scan confirmed a lumbar vertebral fracture involving the posterior wall and partial compromise of the spinal canal. Surgery was initially recommended by the attending orthopaedic surgeon.

However, once it became clear that insurance would not cover the treatment, the clinical plan changed abruptly and surgery was no longer considered necessary. No new imaging or clear clinical justification was provided for this change.

Pain management was also delayed until additional financial payment was made, despite severe pain and a confirmed spinal injury. Adequate analgesia was only provided after a substantial deposit was transferred.

During the inpatient stay, basic nursing care appeared to be largely absent. As I was unable to sit or mobilise independently, received no assisted mobilisation, no hygiene support for several days, and no structured monitoring. Care was effectively provided by a non-medical companion under remote guidance from medically trained family members.

That companion remained at the hospital continuously, as it was not safe to leave me unattended. However, as she was not admitted as a patient, she was not provided with food. The hospital cafeteria was frequently closed, and due to unfamiliarity with the area and safety concerns, she did not feel able to leave the hospital alone.

When she asked staff about food options, no practical support was offered, even when we explicitly stated we were willing to pay or have the cost added to my bill. On one occasion, she was advised to go outside the hospital and ask a passer-by for help in obtaining food. This response was both inappropriate and concerning.

Further concerns included delayed thrombosis prevention measures and lack of proper instruction regarding spinal support equipment.

Despite submitting a formal complaint, a follow-up, and a final notice, no response has been received from the hospital.

We would have strongly preferred a professional and constructive resolution. Unfortunately, the lack of engagement has left me with no alternative but to share this experience.

I hope the hospital will review its practices to ensure patient safety, ethical standards, and basic care are consistently upheld.

I remain open to direct contact from Hospiten Group to resolve this matter.
