A Low Bar

This firm required sixteen weeks to complete the cash purchase of a flat with vacant possession. Messages to Emmersons triggered an auto-reply of ‘…endeavour to respond within five working days…”, a low bar which they rarely if ever achieved. Our solicitor took less than one day to respond to any issue. How we wish our buyers had used a different firm.

This company is a disgrace

This company is a disgrace. They state,'We offer you a compassionate helping hand, often at the most difficult time of your life.' This is a complete lie. My partner and I had an appointment booked in April to rewrite our wills. They cancelled our home appointment roughly a week before. I explained that my partner was now in palliative care and we really needed to keep the appointment. They said there was nothing they could do and I should go to another solicitor. We have been with this company since first writing out wills in 2006. This is an unacceptable way to treat your clients. Consequently my partner passed away before amending his will. I have since removed both our wills from this company. This in itself was another drama. I had to telephone them three times, after each call I was told they would ring me back and they did not. I am sure our wills would still be there if I had not told them I was going to collect them on a specific day. When collecting the wills, I had to wait while they photocopyed all the paperwork. They obviously presumed I would not be turning up. Do not use this company, they do not even deserve one star.

They didnt made my refund

I needed support in a relationship with my baby and the father of the child. The company wants payment first then they organize a meeting. My appointment was for Friday June 6th 3 pm. On Wednesday I received a call and I had to travel to my country because I was sick. I had to cancel the trip because of travel and I asked for a refund, they say it was not received and they are not refunding my money.

Great Communication

From initial contact I had the same person through to final completion. Communication was always in a timely and quick manner, whether by email and / or telephone.

Invoicing and projected costs were practically aligned and so no surprising cost's.

All in all we will definitely use Emmerson's again as a company we prefer to support local professional support.

House conveyancing made easy.…

The whole experience of buying and selling a house was made extremely easy thanks to Michael. Everything was handled very professionally and quickly. I couldn't recommend Emmersons more highly for making a stressful process flow so smoothly. Thank you.

Avoid

If you’re looking for a competent, punctual and professional solicitor firm then please do further research and avoid Emmerson’s at all costs.
Emmerson’s were involved in the sale of our house and the purchase of our new home. They say moving house can be one of the most stressful things you can do and Emmerson’s certainly made sure of that. Phone calls not returned, emails ignored, continuous errors made and that’s just the beginning.
Thanks to Emmerson’s they made us (including two children) homeless for 5 days with nothing but the clothes on our back. I’m sure they’ll come back on here and say it was down to a “banking error” but they failed to inform us in good time of a potential delay in order for us to properly prepare ourselves. In the midst of all this our solicitor Caitlin, who was terrible throughout, called us to say she was leaving that night and that someone else will be taking over our case. Right at a crucial point in our completion.
To add further insult to injury, Jacquline, the director of Emmerson’s emailed a week or so later, no, not to apologise but asking us to THANK her staff because our case was so “stressful” for them. I responded to this offensive email and received no reply.
I wish I could zero star this because they don’t even deserve the one star. Avoid.

Good experience during drawn out process

We had an extremely long, drawn out sale process due to a multitude of reasons, one of which was receiving really poor advice and service from our initial conveyancers.

After around 7 or 8 months we transferred our case across to Emmersons and Emily Ferguson was allocated to us. Whilst the case dragged for another 6 months or so, Emily was excellent in proactively driving the case forward, answering our queries in a professional and timely manner and ensuring that all of our questions were answered. We would thoroughly recommend anyone who was considering using Emmersons to go ahead, particularly if they can rely on Emily being on the case.

The only slight issue was the struggle to find anyone to take things forward when Emily was on holiday. We had potential completion dates, LISA submissions, and paperwork needing to be done and it required a few phone calls and emails to push this forward from our side. However I understand the sheer amount of work on the conveyancing side at the moment so can appreciate why this was the case.

All in all a positive experience in what was an incredibly stressful process.

Total disaster and disregard for paying…

Total disaster and disregard for paying customers.

My 3 year old can communicate better then these

The main issue I had was that the lady dealing with my case had left the company without informing me. No one from the company bothered to tell me either. So for 2 months nothing was achieved after numerous emails and voicemails from myself and others involved. By this point it was normal to never ever get an answer from a phone call so we were already used to emails and voice malls being the way of contact.

I even emailed the director Jacqueline Emmerson whos response about this was pretty much take it or leave it.

I am not exaggerating when I say no one from the conveyance office in Newcastle would ever ever answer the phone. I was on the verge of ploughing my car into the front of the building at one point but was worried I would drive it over the Tyne bridge on the way I was that stressed!

Not one single time did they ever call me when they promised they would often leaving me stressing over the weekend for no reason.

AVOID AVOID AVOID

When explaining what was happening with my solicitor others and estate agents involved laughed and explained they are known to struggle with high turnover of staff.

Save yourself the stress and go elsewhere

They promised the world with excellent communication when they wanted to take on my case but did not deliver on the promises!

I actually felt sorry for the young man dealing with my case as it was shoved onto him and he was clearly overworked.


If this was for any other service and didn't need to pay upfront before the move there is no way I would have paid

Thank you Kalvin. I am sorry this was your experience. We experienced a sudden shortage of staff as people left on short notice and through illness. We had to engage the services of a locum. There was not, literally, time to speak and email was the best method of communication.

It isn't true to say that we experience a high turnover of staff and I'm not sure how your estate agent would know what goes on in my office anyway. In any event we addressed the issues by not taking on new work for 12 weeks, concentrating on the matters that we had open and completing them as quickly as we could. Indeed all across the country conveyancing departments faced extreme pressure due to the SDLT holiday, the demand for housing and people leaving the profession.
Now we have increased our fees, we are accepting new instructions and offering clients the level of service they expect and until recent times we were able to deliver. Most of this year has been horrendous, from a conveyancing and client service point of view, but now that is all behind us.

Overall very good service

It was difficult for me to communicate with Emmersons Solicitors regarding my recent conveyancing case and I became frustrated on many occasions.

*HOWEVER*, I know that this is the case for every single conveyancing solicitor in the country at the moment, as well as any agency relating to property sales (e.g. The Land Registry or the local council). Emmersons always eventually responded to me and all of the work required to be completed for my flat purchase was done within a good time frame (around 3 months). Everyone at Emmersons was always polite and highly professional with me and I felt that they genuinely cared about their work and their clients. I would recommend Emmersons for conveyancing because despite them being slow to communicate, this is absolutely not their fault (it is a national issue), they care about their clients and... they do actually get the job done! I would use them again.

A totally traumatising experience.

The firm were good in 2019, but staff have left so there seems to be only one trainee solicitor working in conveyancing now. He offered sympathy, but there was no sense of urgency at all. It was only after I had agreed to the sale following his purchase report that he asked for proof of funding to satisfy Compliance, something that should have been done months before. When I told this to the Estate Agent, (who had been in touch with me daily, ringing Emmersons and emailing them for months), he said they were the worst firm he had ever come across. Our offer had been accepted 1st April; by 1st of August the people at the head of the chain were about to give up and let their property. I was in tears. House prices had gone up, the mortgage rate had doubled. I would never be able to afford that house again. Fortunately I did have a good Financial Adviser: Emmersons were suddenly in a position to exchange after he rang and told them they were off the case.

But it was too late. I never wanted to ring them only to find I was flipped over to voicemail because they knew my number. I was able to change solicitor to one the Estate Agent knew was okay, the mortgage company could re-issue the offer, and finally everyone could get on with our lives.

Don't think your experience will be any different. I thought that back in April, and it wasn't.

In any event you will be pleased to know that we have a new Conveyancing Manager and experienced staff who are dealing with a large number of new instructions. We have increased our fees so we can offer clients a more bespoke service. Prior to that 3 members of staff left suddenly and we had to bring in a locum to deal with the caseload so we didn't start any new matters for some 10-12 weeks. Unfortunately this meant there was disruption and we couldn't spend time on phone calls due to the amount of work that there was. All those issues are now resolved.

** Update **. Following the Emmersons reply, I am even more infuriated with this company. I have bought and sold, over 25 properties through Emmersons and now they claim they can't find any record of me as a client???? What a joke.

Best to avoid

Their conveyancing service was doubtful. As I was buyer, I had to keep contact with seller solicitor via estate agent closely to know what is next to my house purchasing progress.

It was so hard to reach their conveyancing solicitor (Mr. Le G) and you could only reach his paralegal (Ms. La Mc) but both of them often busy, tooking levae or long holidays.

If you raised your complaints via their company complaint about billing issue, the guy Michael was very rude, he try to argue was you have said. Afterwards, their accountant will reach you and said you have owned their money after checking your bill. Therefore I was lost my money because of rasing the complaints.

I would give them 0 scores if trustpilot let me to do so.

They are currently short-staffed and so have more work than they can handle efficiently

In early February I instructed Emmersons to handle conveyancing for a very simple sale, after reading their positive Google reviews. We had a cash buyer with no chain, so it should have been very quick and simple, but we didn't complete until late June, and I'm still waiting for the final statement of my account from them. Emmersons were responsible for unacceptably long delays during the process. Throughout this time, requests for updates were not being responded to - their auto-replies said not to expect a reply before 5-10 days, and not to chase for further updates. I eventually escalated to a senior partner, who explained that: "We have stopped taking on work as a result of being 3 conveyancers down."
The solicitor dealing with our case was always polite and professional, but that is not enough when faced with unacceptable delays and poor communication. It would have been better if Emmersons had pro-actively emailed all their clients to explain the issues they were having, and stopped taking on new work sooner. I hope that they resolve their issues soon.

Like many conveyancing firms staff retention is an issue due to the pressure under which staff have been working.
Approximately 40% of conveyancing staff have exited across all firms.
Staff were i’ll and left on short notice. As a result remaining staff were swamped.
We stopped taking on new work at the point when that was necessary.
As with many things in life retrospect offers a perfect solution and I would be lying if I said we could not have done things differently but we have all done our best.
In any event to address the issues we have recruited new staff, we will be raising our fees, we will be offering a bespoke service across England and Wales and we will have the time to offer the level of contact clients and others appear to desire.

This company should not exist for anyone. AVOID NO MATTER HOW CHEAP!!!

Never use, avoid at all costs. Would not even use them if they are free. Michael Robinson the director of this firm, an absolute horrible person and shows lack of professionalism. Even the employees of this firm are very stressed out and are not able to fulfil the demand of clients I wouldn't be surprised if they have a very high staff turnover. I wasn't surprised when I came on trust pilot to see the amount of negative responses.

I’m neither horrible nor unprofessional.
We experienced absences through illness and the rearrangement of medical procedures and through staff leaving on short notice.
Luckily we’ve managed to find excellent replacements and indeed we have decided to offer a bespoke conveyancing service at increased fees to ensure clients receive the level of contact they desire. This offering is already proving popular ahead of the launch day of 5 September.
If I believe a client has a legitimate complaint I will address it, as I have done in recent weeks.

Absolutely useless

Absolutely useless, they lie at a director level and do not follow instructions. Sending documents which were not the contract that was signed trying to say this was the contract. Luckily I have kept the proof of these emails to send to legal ombudsman.

I would avoid at all costs now in the situation where they did not follow instruction and now left in a venerable position due to their incompetence.

Have referred to legal ombudsman and instructed solicitor to check on the work they carried out and make sure they have even registered the property properly.

Micheal the director will not even call you to sort out the complainant and also will try to tell you about how things are done when he is not a conveyancer.

No one lied to you. You attempted to cause us to make a payment to you under the threat of legal action and I refused to because you weren’t entitled to it.

You’ve produced no proof and made generalised assertions.

There was no need for me to call you to sort out your complaint as your complaint was baseless given it was founded on your lack of understanding of how the Persimmon Retention scheme actually means and how it works.

You can check the Land Registry yourself and see it is properly registered.

I look forward to hearing from the Legal Ombudsman.

The worst of the worst experience

The worst of the worst experience! You couldn’t make it up, promised the world when signing up, no response in weeks, no updates, lied to throughout the case. If I could give people one bit of advice, never ever use this solicitor firm.

Worse than useless

Worse than useless
2 solicitors Helen Miller (now a director at McKenzie Bell Solicitors) and Tracey Hammond dealt with our probate matter, over £3k charged, took almost 4 years to complete which only benefited the solicitors financially.
Slow to respond, bills resent due to errors, client’s name was wrong, letters contained spelling mistakes, correspondence missing and not filed. Helen Miller claimed she had responded to a 3rd party solicitor and would send us a copy of the letter. Our subsequent emails requesting a copy of the letter were ignored and not filed. In fact, the firm failed to respond to the 3rd party solicitor for 18 months who then threatened me with litigation and court proceedings.
When a Formal Complaint was made to Michael Robinson, a director, the firm’s response was dismissive and belittling, even describing our correspondence as ‘full of nothingness’. Their dismissive response for the missing correspondence was ‘if it’s not in the file, you haven’t been charged for it’. Their failure to respond to the 3rd party solicitor was dismissed as ‘largely academic’.

The firm did not offer an apology, denied they had provided a poor service but sent us a cheque for £300 in full and final settlement without explaining what it was actually for.
Our complaint to the legal ombudsman (LO) was split into 13 complaints, 4 of which were upheld. The LO agreed the firm’s advice had fallen short, that they’d failed to provide a copy of and comply with their own complaint’s procedure within a reasonable time frame, that their complaint’s handling had fallen short and that there had been poor service provided. ‘For the firm to have lost certain correspondence is poor service.’ The firm was directed to pay £300 compensation and apologise for the poor service. The LO’s Final Decision published on their website was binding and enforceable through the courts if the firm did not comply with it.
Mr Robinson apologised for the complaints upheld by the LO with an enclosed cheque being the compensation awarded to me. The firm can dispute my negative review but the fact is that the LO’s decision was that the firm had provided a poor service.
I do not recommend this firm to anybody. Worse than useless.

The Legal Ombudsman agreed that what we had offered as compensation for poor service (which we had acknowledged) was adequate and so the Legal Ombudsman agreed with how we had handled your complaint.

Rude, inattentive, unresponsible..

We have worked with Emmersons Solicitors on a number of conveyancing jobs. At first they were very responsive as you would expect any professional firm to be.

After a while they stopped keeping us informed on the progress of our deals - our emails would be ignored in some cases for a whole week or longer. Phone calls not answered and no call backs. We have also experienced some unpleasant attitude when pushing for updates.

To summarise, they are capable of doing the work, however, if you want to stay informed on the progress of the deal, not be ignored by your solicitor and not to experience occasional rudeness, we would advise looking elsewhere.

We have listened to the concerns expressed by clients and others-which unfortunately arises out of a profession wide lack of experienced conveyancers and so to ensure that we have the time to engage with clients in the manner that they desire we are increasing our fees so we can offer an improved level of contact.

In May two staff were experiencing medical issues and one left on short notice. We stopped taking on new work. The remaining staff were swamped with work. The email auto response message explained the situation.
We have engaged new staff-it has taken time-and like other firms who experienced similar issues to ourselves determined to increase the time per transaction through increased fees. This new bespoke device commences 5 September and is already proving popular with enquiries already coming in, even though we are still not opening new files.

We tried, they failed!

Their price was ever so slightly cheaper than their competitors, however after hooking us in with their sales call we decided to proceed with conveyancing through Emmersons.

HUGE MISTAKE! I called up once to speak to our solicitor, discovered that was she was a trainee and if you even attempt to request anything they'll spout their T&Cs at you about their timescales.

Not flexible, lack of transparency and their customer service skills leave a lot to be desired. As for being Newcastle's "LGBT+ friendly" I certainly didn't experience this, it's all marketing BS!

The person to whom you spoke is gay.
You were told at the start that the fee represented a certain level of contact.
However as a result of what my staff have had to put up with these last few months and because of comments about the fee and contact levels we have decided to increase the fees and thereby give clients the level of contact they desire.
