My sisters and I engaged Brethertons to set up a life interest trust and transfer half the ownership of our parents’ house to the trust, following the death or our father.

The staff with whom we dealt were all very friendly and helpful.

However, at the start of the process, we and our mother each had to prove our identity. This was not a very straightforward exercise, even more so for my mother who doesn’t use a computer. And even after we had gone to the trouble of providing our details, we found that Brethertons had still not managed to add this information correctly to documents. This didn’t give me much confidence that they would then be able to carry out the rest of the matters correctly. Given the hourly rates of the staff concerned, I expected a relatively simple task like copying client details to be done without error.

The engagement pack that we were sent at the start of the conveyancing appeared to be tailored to a more usual property sale or purchase than our situation, which meant that a lot of it was not applicable. More significantly, the section entitled “Our Understanding Of Your Instructions” didn’t actually include any detail of what Brethertons would do, until we pointed this out.

When it came to signing documents, there were some problems with electronic signing of PDFs, for example links to out-of-date PDFs being sent.

According to the engagement pack, "Brethertons is a new breed of legal service providers” and “information will be in plain English”. However, our experience was that their letters and documents are coded in a language that is distinctly Dickensian in its verbosity and opacity.

So, overall, although I think Brethertons has some nice, well-meaning staff, it has a very long way to go to prove that it’s really a new breed.

We worked with Laura and then Amber Morris to handle my Father's Estate and I highly recommend them. It was a little complicated as we wanted to do a variance on the will to allow my niece to keep dad's house in the family while ensuring the other grandchildren were all treated equally. Very happy with the service. We have also used Brethertons for several property purchases and sales. Good firm, very respectable and the offices look professional.

I highly recommend Brethertons LLP Solicitors. Brethertons LLP Solicitors and the rest of the team eased my worries about the whole process. Definitely great customer service and professionalism. If I ever (which I hope I don’t) get into any other trouble, Brethertons LLP Solicitors is the one I will call on.

I recently rang Brethertons for a quote for a will, which would be uncontested and with no property involved. I was quoted a whopping £550 plus VAT! Are you serious?!

UPDATE: Since writing this review, Brethertons are now gaslighting me and trying to have Trustpilot take it down.

I engaged the services of Dominic Wisdom. During our collaboration, there were some challenges regarding the clarity of costs. Initially, I paid £500 as an advance payment, with the understanding, based on Dominic’s assurances, that I would be notified before reaching this amount.

Unexpectedly, I received an additional invoice for £1,787.00. This was without any prior indication that the initial budget of £500, which I had set for the specific consultation, was being exceeded.

I can't thank Annabel Burchett , Nimita Rana and team enough for the excellent advice, guidance, professionalism and friendliness in dealing with family trusts and my late mother's complex estate. They managed to make what is an emotional process as stress free as possible. The process was made easier by the clarity of the wills, trusts and powers of attorney drawn up by Brethertons over 20 years ago. I'd also like to thank Lottie Dunkley and Julia McVeigh for their excellence in the legal work associated with selling a house that had been in the family since it was built in the early 1950s. Great communicators one and all.

Brethertons has agreed with a case assessment from the Legal Ombudsman from November 2025 that they made a currency error and did not rectify the error and were unreasonable.
I am grateful for this accountability from the Legal Ombudsman but it does not make any difference whatsoever. Brethertons has not rectified their error or acted reasonably. I can sue Brethertons if I want to try and for compensation that is my only option with them.

Regarding Brethertons Rugby Branch

I had an incredibly frustrating experience with this company's customer service. The representative I spoke to was absolutely rude and disrespectful. Despite my attempts to address outstanding questions during a brief 4-minute call, the representative abruptly hung up on me, completely disregarding my need for assistance.

The reason for my call was to discuss a letter I had received regarding a late payment to my management company. I made multiple attempts to dispute this matter by providing evidence through emails and calls. Unfortunately, the company has been entirely unresponsive through email. They have not replied to any of my emails, and on the few occasions I managed to get through on the phone, they hung up without allowing me to finish the conversation.

This level of customer service is completely unacceptable. Dealing with financial matters requires a level of professionalism and respect that was sorely lacking in my interaction with this company. I sincerely hope they take this feedback seriously and work towards improving their customer service standards.

Further comment from me towards their reply on 27th Nov.:
1.I am not their client which is correct. My property management company instructed them to send me legal letter and appoint them as the only contact window to deal with the case. So no excuse for I am not your client.

2 Although you are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, you don't have the basic courtesy to reply people's questions.

The replies from them is unfortunately more sad to see. Instead of looking into the case and find out the person who is rude to me then apologize, you are replying in ignorance of the situation. I am so sad to see a big company operating like this.

Kalpana at the Rugby branch was incredible helpful in assisting our house sale. Communication was prompt, polite and helpful. Price was very reasonable too. Will definitely return for any other legal matters in the future

From start to finish, the whole experience was brilliant. Dominic Wisdom who managed my preparation for a trial for financial settlement. He made every effort to supply me with information to support my decisions. Thanks to him I now have all the advice and information I need. I highly recommend this firm for your needs whatever the circumstances. He went the extra mile and nothing was too much.

The solicitor assigned to manage my uncles estate was very helpful and answered all my questions, extremely satisfied.

I have had efficient and friendly service from everyone at Brethertons during the purchase of my house. Emma Morris, in particular, was a great support and always available if I had a question or concern about the process.

I had a probate problem & Josh was on hand to sort things out and reassure. Nothing was to much for him & my issues were quickly & professionally dealt with.

Having previously dealt with Brethertons through the loss of my father, when I needed legal advice and representation with a family matter I had no hesitation in contacting Brethertons. The service received from initial contact, keeping up to date, attending court right through to completion was brilliant, friendly, knowledgeable, would not hesitate to use them again in the future.

Brethertons have been our family solicitor since 1980, have served us well in the past and continue to do for me, now that I am widowed. The staff are always friendly, helpful and professional. I value their advice and trust them without reserve, and find comfort in knowing I can turn to them for legal advice whenever I need it.

My Mother sadly passed away last year and my Solicitor,Laura Stuart was very thorough with dealing with her estate including obtaining Probate.
Laura and her team dealt with the whole complex process in a very efficient and thoughtful manner.

Steer clear of using Brethertons fixed fee service!

I purchased a fixed fee online service, she does not respond to anything for weeks and it appears only a phone call will prompt her to look at your case.
A painful process indeed.
