Cheap, yet completely backdoored

WebDock now requires you (as per their ToS) to run Incus-Agent inside yout VPS at all times. Incus-Agent runs as root, and the version they are using (6.18) does not support agent functionality restrictions (introduced in 6.20).

So, essentially, they require you to give them root shell access whenever they feel like it, otherwise your account will be terminated. Moreover, they ship the agent not as a standard Debian package, but as a binary that is baked into their custom distro, which arouses even more suspicion.

I am surprized noone talks about it.

For now, I have modified their incus-agent-setup script to copy my own binary of incus-agent v6.20 into /run/incus_agent/ and created /etc/incus-agent.yml too take the 'exec' permission away from the agent, so that noone is able to run arbitrary code inside MY server.

It's like they say: if something is too cheap, then probably you are the product.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. We can tell this comes from a place of genuine concern, and we would always rather have customers raise hard questions openly than sit with them in silence.

You are absolutely right about one thing: yes, we do require the Incus agent to be present in customer VPSs. That is not new, and it has been part of how our platform works for more than 7 years.

The reason is much more practical, and much less dramatic, than your review suggests. The agent is what allows us to provide a lot of the support, safety, and convenience features customers rely on. Without it, we have no meaningful visibility into a machine when something goes wrong. That means we cannot properly warn about severe abnormal resource usage, help detect signs of compromise, or step in during emergencies when a customer has accidentally locked themselves out, broken networking, damaged sudo, or otherwise bricked access to their own server.

Without the agent, the fallback in many support cases would actually be worse: customers would need to send us shell login details in plain text if they wanted help recovering access. That is not a path we like, and one of the reasons the platform is designed the way it is.

A large share of the quality-of-life features in the Webdock dashboard also depend on the agent being there and able to do its job. Server-side automation, web server settings, certificate renewals, WebSSH key handling, and various other convenience features rely on that channel. So this is not about wanting mysterious access for its own sake. It is about making the platform work as intended.

We also want to reassure anyone reading your review that this is not some open “root shell for whoever feels like it” arrangement. Access through the agent is not exposed to the public internet. It is tightly secured, restricted to authorized Webdock staff, and used only in the context of operating and supporting the platform.

On the version point, we do not roll out new Incus versions across the fleet impulsively. We test for a good while before broader rollout, because in infrastructure, “latest” is not always the same as “best right now.” The version we are currently evaluating internally is v6.21. So this was not about deliberately keeping you on 6.18; you simply happened to be on a host that had not yet been upgraded.

And just to clear up another point: we are not building our own suspicious custom Incus agent binary and sneaking it into customer servers. The agent comes with the official Incus images provided by the Incus community. That is the normal model for Incus images, just as similar baked-in agent behavior exists in LXD images as well. So on that front, there is no intrigue here.

That said, your review did highlight something useful, and for that we genuinely thank you. We were not aware of the newer restriction options introduced in later Incus agent versions. We are not opposed in principle to allowing customers to limit exec functionality, but the tradeoff must be clear: most convenience features in the Webdock dashboard would stop working, and our support team would have very limited ability to help if a server ends up in trouble, especially if the customer has lost access themselves.

And because your review hints at something more serious, we want to address that plainly and without theatrics: no, we are not using the Incus agent for anything nefarious. We are not poking around in customer servers for profit, curiosity, or sport. The information we gather is related to utilization metrics and, in some cases, certain system logs that help us identify abuse, malware, or compromised systems so we can better protect customers and the platform as a whole. There is no secret “you are the product” business model hiding behind this. We are a hosting company. We host servers. Sometimes the boring explanation really is the true one.

Reliable servers and fast support

I have been using Webdock servers and I am very happy with the service. The servers are stable, the platform is easy to use, and overall the experience has been very positive. I contacted support once, and they resolved my issue very quickly. Fast and helpful support makes a big difference, and that is one of the reasons I can confidently recommend Webdock.

The best

Excellent Customer Support

Got locked out of my server after a reboot — couldn't access SSH, WebSSH, or KVM console. Reached out to support and they diagnosed and fixed the issue quickly while I was on chat. Great technical support that goes beyond just sending docs. Appreciate the hands-on help!

I can't remember all the benefits of webdock but the best things I see are:
stable

Good customer support. But no annual plan.

Thank you for the good customer support. I started using webdock vps server since Jan 2026, wherever i face any issue these guys are there to support.

The only problem with webdock is that by the time I am reviewing here they still don't have annual plan to their packages, they only have monthly plan so if you need to get annual plan you won't get it. If they change this then they will be perfect.

Best hosting experience I've had — and I'm not just saying that

I've been hosting with WebDock for over a year now and it's easily the best hosting experience I've had.

First off — the support team is incredible. They're fast, friendly, and will genuinely go out of their way to help you with anything. I'm not exaggerating when I say they'd probably offer emotional support if you asked nicely. Every interaction feels human, not scripted.

The platform itself is clean and well-designed — snapshots, load balancer, everything just works without unnecessary complexity. Network is blazing fast too, no complaints there.

Pricing? Honestly hard to believe for what you get. Great IP selection as well — the support team even helped me pick the right one for my setup.

Already recommended WebDock to all my friends and will keep doing so. These guys deserve way more recognition than they get.

Hej

Jeg oplevede forhøjede ping-tider (ca. 30 ms), hvilket var for højt til mit lille projekt.

Jeg følte mig desværre lidt overset af netværksteamet, og jeg var derfor tæt på at skifte væk fra Webdock.

Men så trådte Arni til og fik løst problemet. Mine ping-tider ligger nu omkring 14 ms — tusind tak!

Webdock er derfor min foretrukne hostingløsning fremover.
