Total Fitness are not worthy of one star.

I decided to join in August 2021 due to having a progressive muscular illness with a hope that I could make life a little better by using the gym facilities such as hydro and swimming pools along with the static bikes and treadmills.

But due to illness and transportation problems I have not even had an induction. I have called TF to advise of my circumstances and the last call I made I asked them to cancel my membership so that they didn’t take any further payments. But tonight I find that they have taken a second payment this month.

During my telephone conversation I asked for the email address for one of TF Directors so I could ask them directly why I was not entitled to receive a refund of the payments taken but was told I could not have a personal email address. I also sent a message to TF through their website asking for confirmation of my membership being cancelled and as yet I have not had a response. I have today sent another message but I don’t think I will get a reply.

This company is quick to take your money and adamant that you won’t get a refund. I don’t recall being told that if you don’t attend you don’t get your money back and I wasn’t given a copy of a contract.

The BESTEST health club ever. Absolutely loved this place. I visited this place for a workout and a swim while passing through Lancashire, and I so wish there was a health club just like this one where I live. It is like a huge mini-indoor arena that combines all kinds of fitness stuff from weights area and HIIT training to swim and athletic running track, all in one! If you imagine you are going to a big house, it's not like there is a sitting room, then a study room, then an entertainment room, then the kitchen next and the bathroom after. It's like all-in-one big open plan. When I was there (a weekday evening), it was packed, and the lighting was a bit more dim than how it looks in photos (loved it - and those who are a little shy with their body shape would also love it), so it's like when you go dancing, it's not a small place with half a dozen or so people watching you. It's like a huge club packed with dozens and dozens - if not hundreds - dancing like no one's watching, so if you're a bit more aware and self-conscious of your body shape, it can help, as you are just one in so many in a huge place. Also loved the clean and nice changing area and shower (for women at least - don't know about men's but I have no reason to doubt it would be any less), so that's a plus. So all of the above is pretty much 'Pro'. As for 'Con'? I can't think of any, but if I were to insist, the only feedback that I would say to the management is: "Please expand to other parts of the UK, and open your clubs like this one in Greater London and the South East!" Thank you.

I was about to rejoin TF again today. I was a member back in the first ever TF in the U.K for 5 years in Edge Lane Liverpool that suddenly got closed down. Ive read all the bad reviews on here and I’d just like to say NOTHING has changed. Poor service, can’t get out of contracts, dirty facilities, etc etc so I won’t be bothering thanks, as someone said it has the potential to be a great gym but until I see this improvement I’ll go elsewhere.

Avoid this gym. They tell you they will pause your membership for free for medical reasons yet don't. I broke my leg badly to the point an operation was needed. I now have 8 pins in my leg. I emailed them to tell them it was broken the day it happend once out of hospital to wait for the operation and sent in pictures of the xray showing my name and info (my fibula was clearly broken in two) they said that was not good enough has to by a doctors note which I had to wait till after the operation which took a week for the doctors to do. Sent this in after as requested to pause the membership which they said would do. Then the payment the month after came out ( I had just paid when I broke it) I emailed eventually got my money back and they said would pause it. Next month payment was taken again! This continued for 4 months till I cancelled my card with my bank for a new one so they couldnt take anymore then the missed payment letters came. Every month I've had to email for my money back or them to remove the missed payments and constantly resend in the doctors note to prove this as they kept requesting it over and over, 6 months on I now need a 2nd operation to remove one of the pins causing me problems and pain. Apparently 6 months is enough time to heal and they can't pause it anymore. I am now trying to work with citizens advice to have my contract cancelled. All they want is your money they don't care about your health and wellness just that you pay. Biggest joke of a company I've known and will never be joining them again

Thrown together leisure centre that takes your money and doesn't care about your fitness, or even if you can get through the gate, attend a class without the instructor being off constant and leave you waiting around for hours to see someone. When I complained they simply said your in a contract tough we want your membership money and your complaints are irrelevant. They are the worst leisure centre for customer care, there is no care and they don't consider the customer. I will never step foot in that leisure centre again, if I didnt have problems before I have now and feel stressed having joined that leisure than I did before. Young kids answering the phone who dont understand or care they are jobsworths who love stating that they just want the money.

Unfortunately the pool and wet area are often dirty and poorly staffed. There is rubbish in the pool for days, hair, plastic, plasters etc. Despite feedback to the team and Head Office it does not change. The sauna is dirty and in poor condition, the heat is often too hot or too cold. The overall gym is in an OK state but much of the electronic kit is worn and becoming faulty. Changing room lockers are few as people keep their kit and lock them up continuously. Great shame as has the opportunity to be a superb gym

I've always been a member of a gym wherever I have lived and this has to be by far the worst experience. I attend Altrincham Total Fitness, it's not very clean, needs a complete refurb, they don't have enough classes or variety of classes, I signed up for a child's membership for my son only to be later told no groups were running for his age, when I asked to cancel as it was pointless they refused. I've seen better local authority gyms than this.

They used covid as an excuse not to put things on... i was told they cancelled children's clubs due to covid, but they still ran the swimming sessions for children (you pay extra for this) and also accepted guests (they pay £15). I was later told it was due to the children's coach being injured... yet they still charge a membership fee.

Please do not waste your money, it's a horrible environment. Positively most of the staff are lovely... there's only one fairly useless personal trainer who's rude, lazy and generally all round pointless...

Save yourself money if you use the pool. Been a member 2 months and so far the main pool has been out of action. The hydropool out of action the small pool out of action. Small pool had black "things" on the bottom and green alge on the sides. Reported twice now and no change.
Drove down this morning and the whole poolside is out of action. No text or email just found out when I got there, waste of time and petrol. Paid a joining fee and ridiculous amount each month just to use the pool. Exceptionally disappointed in it.

I have been a member of total fitness for 18 months now and have finally had enough of their absolute s%@t show of an organisation. There’s absolutely always something not working or something wrong, wether it’s their systems, the app, the heating, the hot water, the parking system, the cleaner, the sauna, whatever it is there is always something wrong. They’re quick enough to take your money but once you’re locked in, couldn’t give 2 hoots about their customer service or service levels and will actually happily just tell you no and get you off the phone or away from the desk if you have a problem, so you’re absolutely helpless to get anything done as they’ve already taken your money. ITS A JOKE! If you’re reading this and have any other gym to go to then I would highly recommend using another one. Trust me, once they’ve got your money they don’t care. I have contacted customer services more than once, no reply, called the branch they just flat out refuse to help.
I was told the other day by a really rude woman that my 8 year old son who was also pays to be a member as well as my 4 year old girl, had to use the men’s changing room on his own and not come in the family change with my daughter and I. Ridiculous and in my opinion a safeguarding issue being away from me in the men’s changing rooms on his own.
The changing rooms are dirty with hair and mud on the floors, the showers and baby pool freezing cold.
I wanted a quest pass, which is PART OF MY MEMBERSHIP, tried to sort it last night on their pathetic app, the option has been removed, online -nope, call up today, all of this using my precious time, to be told by a really rude DAVE OFFEN tough. Directed me to a non existent, imaginary email they’ve supposedly sent to all their 5000 members telling us they need 24 hours notice for a guest pass. Flat out refused to help me even though they have given me zero notice to this change in my terms and conditions.
I absolutely hate this place, the staff, their lack of any customer service skills whatsoever and their blatant disregard of the customer once they’ve got us locked in. This place is not fit for purpose. Unless you like being treated like a total dick whilst you shell out your hard earned money. Choose elsewhere.

I been ony 3 times in total . Even after i cancel my policy they keep taking money from my account. This month 2 times .

Is just inadmissible, that's £212 in just 1 month when I've cancel few month ago. And nobody care about it.

What an absolute waste of money this place is. We joined (at £114 a month) so we could take the children swimming in a nicer environment than the public swimming baths.
To start with the cleanliness in the female changing area isn’t great - there’s been blood on the wall in one of the changing cubicles for weeks and the floor around the cubicles is always grimy and covered in hair. I can’t speak for the men’s husband says it’s ok but men don’t seem to see things the same way!
I made the mistake of swimming under water with goggles on in the little pool one day - BIG mistake made me want to vomit at all the debris and hair etc so don’t know if the filter system needs an overhaul or if it isn’t cleaned enough.
Cleanliness isn’t actually a problem currently as the pool hasn’t been open to children for weeks and weeks. We’ve rung dozens of times and it’s always closed “due to staffing issues”. The hydro therapy pool is also closed “due to technical issues”. So we’re paying £114 a month to never even walk through the door and are having to pay on top to take the three kids swimming elsewhere.

I tried contacting customer “not” services a week ago but keep getting mainly ignored and then fobbed off with a message that the manager will ring me - a week and multiple promises later he still hasn’t rung. Once they have you sign up they couldn’t care less about you or any issues - ever likely they went bust wouldn’t be surprised to see them go again soon.
Going to be cancelling my direct debit after I’ve left this review - that’s sure to get me a phonecall!!

The worst. I signed up to do classes but have been unable to use the app the whole time. Can never get through on the phone. Staff rude. The wilmslow gym has no air con boiling hot. All in all not worth the money.

I can’t understand all these poor reviews as my experience at Total Fitness Wakefield has been 100% positive. I was a member around 4 years ago but had to cancel due to a shoulder injury. This was easy to do. I recently re joined & really glad I did. I was hesitant after seeing reviews on here but did a trial day & found the whole place very clean & well maintained. The staff are sooo friendly & helpful. Membership, gym instructors, lifeguards, cleaners. Literally everyone is lovely. When I was there yesterday a lady was removing all the shower grates & bleaching & scrubbing them which was reassuring. I have also been able to book classes without any problems which has been an issue at other gyms with no capacity. Overall v happy I re joined

For an hour I’ve been trying to cancel my classes on the app and it’s not working also tried ringing no one answering the phone it’s disgraceful!
Also the timetable is not good and classes still at 45mins.
Service is shocking for the money we pay and I’ve been member for along time.

Basic equipment, faulty equipment and the changing rooms are like a sauna and impossible to get ready after a workout if you are planning on going to work. I cannot wait for my 12 months to end so that I can find somewhere better.

I've been part of several gyms with pools over the past 15 years, on a daily basis, in various countries. Some were heavenly, some plagued with daily challenges. TotalFitness is neither, and a first for me. The TotalFitness branch I'm in, as a temporary guest, is sort of 'industrial" in design, with an old factory look (a 1 star as far as I'm concerned, for the overall effect on me just coming in). The fitness area was unbearable during the beyond average hot weeks, as ventilators were utterly useless & available only in 1 room. The fitness area is vast, but "run down" in colours & texture. The pool area is way too noisy when aqua gym pollutes the air, my ears suffering from tinnitus, if I ever stay on in another pool. The vast majority of staff are either distant or resentful of being asked to help on very rare occasions, with scorching water in shower booths / no warning signs on them when I first joined (now they do have warnings) / or with changing rooms scales. The swimming pool is partially a "walking" pool with the club's approval, the quicker the pace, the better I've been told by staff. People walking in a 3rd lane, in the middle, while signs do impose a rotation for swimmers, and bullying swimmers is fine with the life guard. Today I had a guy bump into me at the end of the pool, no excuses, no sorry, then go to the life guard and complain about me swimming too slowly in the medium paced lane, while I had been disciplined and just one of the little beads circling round & round, for 1h30 before this incident. I was therefore sent off to the slow lane in which I systematically overtook everybody / I had tried it out before, am not a complete idiot at 65 / be it doing breast or back stroke. Going back to the same life guard I told him this was just not ok, and he he told me I now did back stroke on purpose just to prove my point... addressing me not as a client, but a 5 year old. The woman on shift for new clients, beyond not busy, was nevertheless not interested in there being no fairness in my story or even in a hint of customer service... At my age, don't expect anything actually, but wanted to share my anecdote. In an era of stakeholders' ratings for whatever we do, face to face or online professionally, of "safe classroom experiences" be it for schools down the road, being bullied by both my counterparts and the guys I actually pay on a monthly and let's make this clear voluntary basis to ensure an enjoyable experience is on the fringe of surreal.

Lincoln Gym. This is a very nice and helpful gym, staff are quite friendly and the gym facilities are excellent. The only issue I have is with the cleanliness of the swimming and changing areas. The floor around the pool is very dirty and I have never seen this cleaned. Whilst I have witnessed the changing area being cleaned occasionally, it still smells very bad of urine in the shower area. The lack of cleanliness creates a slippery surface around the pool and in the changing area, a definite danger to elderly or disabled guests.

My experience of Total Fitness in Crewe (have been a member for 18 years) is that it is a fantastic facility with first class instructors and helpful and friendly staff. Am gutted that it is closing as there is nothing locally to compare. I really don’t understand why there are such negative reviews here, but I can vouch that the Crewe site is outstanding and many members will truly miss it.
