Overall the Rocky Mountaineer did not meet our expectations…
Overall the Rocky Mountaineer experience did not live up to that promised by either RM itself or the travel company that booked the journey. The train was comfortable, the staff were excellent and the food and drink good, but there were many minus points. First, we had to move our seats, which btw were comfortable and spacious, because we were located near to the noisy serving area at the back of the carriage. Second, although we were told that each day "could be a 10 hour day", over the two days we spent 23.5 hours on the train to travel 519 miles, and we had to leave our hotel at 0600 hours on the 2nd day to take the bus to the train: I love train travel but not that much! Third, the observation car was on the lower level of our two-tier carriage (we travelled on the more expensive Gold Leaf service), which meant that many views were just laterally of millions of trees. Fourth, our hotel in Kamloops was one of the worst that my wife and I have stayed in for many years, very boring and extremely noisy as it was next to a six-lane highway - it reminded us of a Soviet era hotel in Armenia! Fifth, the trip is very expensive and left us with too little time to explore the delightful Banff and its surrounding area,
Maybe I was lucky or maybe most people…
Maybe I was lucky or maybe most people that leave reviews have a bad experience but I had a great time . I was on the train from Lake Louise to Vancouver for 2 days . If I do it again I would go the other way, ending our trip in the rockies . The tech of the train and the history of railroad was really interesting . Our hosts where awesome, really nice people. It was my 25th wedding aniversary and very special. Thanks Rocky mountaineer.
My expectations were perhaps too high
My expectations were perhaps too high, but our first day was a very long 14 hours with two very long stops for freight trains to
Pass. Drink offering was stingy and we had a full dinner after we disembarked. Done it, scratched the itch but nowhere near worth the money.
Keep your money in your pocket!
What a disappointment our trip has been, the biggest waste of money ever in our lives and we have travelled the world. It was a special celebration being my husband's 80th birthday. It's been on our bucket list for a while but Covid got in the way. We left a very rainy Banff but eventually the sun came out which always seems to make things better. The 'fabulous' breakfast was disappointing, there wasn't enough salmon to cover my eyelid. The food is extremely small portions and trust me, we are not big eaters. Our biggest gripe was the temperature. Whilst I get we are in the mountains, the low temperature was unbelievable and we ended up like 2 blocks of ice. Another passenger asked for the temperature to be increased and she was told to 'make sure you layer up tomorrow '. We saw the engineer just shrug his shoulders when approached by the host. Our blanket request appears to be still outstanding. The scenery is beautiful, but that comes free anyway. I cannot emphasise too much, keep your money in your pockets. It's a long way to go, to freeze for a couple of days. I can do that for free at home. I can understand why there were empty seats
Gold Leaf service was Spectacular
Gold Leaf service and equipment was spectacular. Like a well oil machine with a very personal touch. Proof you can get world class service without the pressure of a tip. Our travel agent messed up instructions and RM came to the rescue. Weather did not cooperate in mid-June but views were still majestic even with clouds and some rain.

I feel sorry for the other people who have had a bad experience, perhaps I was lucky ?
Anyway, my partner & I did the Goldleaf trip between Vancouver and Banff late May and the whole thing was superb and the crew/staff were fantastic
The seats were great, heated and reclined, although glad to say we weren't in the emergency exit seats as these have slightly restricted views
the food was top notch and well presented, how the cooks produce that in the small galleys is mindboggling
there was plenty of choice for drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic
It's worth mentioning that this is not an all you can eat/drink thing like when you go all inclusive on holiday, so food apart from snacks is at meal times and although you can request whatever drink whenever, it was generally at set times
yes, there was the odd delay while waiting for commercial trains to clear and the Hotel in Kamloops wasn't the best but comfortable for 1 night
Yes it's a lot of money, but, a very nice way to see the countryside and Rocky mountains
oh, marked down 1 star for the hotel (sandman) in Kamloops
Dont bother this is not a luxury train…
Dont bother this is not a luxury train ride it is a waste of good money. Trapped for 15 hours on board which is a regular occurrence no smoking (ok i understand risk to environment and its anti social) but we were told smoking was allowed on viewing platforms .Carriage was freezing ,My opinion is Dont waste your money .
Beware, this was a horrible experience
this was a horrible experience. they should be required to disclose that they can and will (and did) trap you on the train tracks for 17 hours with dwindling drink service, no food service last six hours of trip and minimal space. Our two day train trip from Vancouver to Banf, went from a 6 hour day one train with an overnight in Kamloops - to 17 hours stuck on the tracks from 2PM to 9:30PM, only to be trained about an hour to a place in Ashcroft and detrained at 10:30PM on the rocky tracks, by the side of the ride in the dark and taken to dirty, dated, crowded buses. Rode an hour and 20 minutes on the crowded bus without bathrooms, for a midnight arrival in Kamloops to a mildly dirty, well worn motel. (Wish we could upload photos, can provide). this was one of the ‘nicer motels’ you could be assigned. hotel is a misnomer.
Luxury train is also a stretch, especially gold leaf, as the seats are small (similar in size to a coach airplane seat - not first class - with some leg room and about 18% recline ability). Seats are tightly packed, do not rotate and personal space is extremely limited. gold leaf car does at least give you a dining car downstairs, but is also tightly packed booths of four, which was mildly uncomfortable for four adults to dine together. With a 7:35AM boarding time, the food served was good, but after providing an 11AM breakfast and a 2PM lunch, they offered trail mix and then cheese and crackers with drink service and then a 4oz vegetarian dumpling and scoop of rice at your seat at 6PM. No other food service or food access was offered, even for purchase. Drink service was available starting after breakfast, around noon; someone asked for a welcome drink and was denied, we asked for water and coffee and were told it would ‘be brought around soon’ translate two hours later. This is again the stretch of calling this ‘luxury or unlimited’, it is friendly, clean and polite, but there are significant limitations. you also can’t even help yourself to water. This became significant when trapped for 17 hours in a coach airplane sized seat, without food and dwindling hostess service in the heating upstairs car.
at least gold leaf could walk downstairs to the open air platform, that could hold 20 adults like sardines or ten comfortably; again small space for number of people packed into train car and stuck on the tracks for 17 hours. Have photos to properly illustrate small seats, capacity per car (about 60 people seated in gold leaf single car), limited leg room and overall limited space for movement. There are two bathrooms, that were clean. You do not have access to walk the train or visit other cars, there is no viewing car, etc. I mention this because other train and especially European luxury trains, this is standard. You were not allowed to self exit (read trapped), because of safety. We would have paid for a car service to retrieve us. This is ironic because we sat unmoving in the heat for over 7 hours from 2PM until 9:30 PM, again dwindling service and no food last six hours of a 17 hour day, then trained an hour and detrained in the exact situation, we were told was too unsafe earlier, to self exit. it was after dark then. the government requires them to change train operators after 12 hours for safety, they should do the same for passengers. The buses again, worn, crowded and no bathroom; not what anyone wants to driven around the winding mountains in after dark.
They should be required to disclose this is possible, probable and does happen. “Possible delays” do not adequately describe cover what occurred. A luxury train through scenic mountain vistas with unlimited, luxury food and drink service in a spacious train car this was not. apparently day two provides more scenic views as day one to the point we traveled was no wildlife beyond birds, some river and arid, desert mountains. $6000 for two people after fees and taxes to be trapped in a diminish hell-scape is more accurate. Full disclosure of reasonable experience should be required. We would not have booked had we known.
We were forced to cancel our trip with…
We were forced to cancel our trip with Rocky Mountaineer because they refused to change one of the passengers name! We weren’t making any other changes! Be careful when booking with Rocky Mountaineer this cost us $8,000!
Lost it all to Rocky Mountaineer
We were among many others whose substantial deposit paid in 2019 for a trip in 2020 was kept by the company after COVID hit. They did offer a credit for later travel but under strict conditions of scheduling that we could not meet. While most travel-related companies such as airlines did provide refunds in this situation, Rocky Mountaineer took the money and ran.
I wish I could give a -5 Review
As someone who lost $660, my deposit to this company, there is more to the story of Rocky Mountaineer than told in these reviews alone. First of all probably all the people who bought tickets for RM also got travel insurance as well, but it was rendered useless. The contract that I signed in Feb 2020 was for the 2019 "travel season" which I did not realize. The 2020 contract for the 2020 season wasn't posted until April 2020, and RM unilaterally changed all the terms and conditions that are referred to in this article and why many have had no luck in getting their money back. Most of us affected belong to a Facebook group "Rocky Mountaineer Train Rorts" in which is 421 members and know that as fact because we have been through it all trying to get our money back. Many of these people are from Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain and have upwards of $35,000 being held by RM. People have had spouses die and were told RM would allow them to transfer the ticket. If you have time go to Trip Advisor "Rocky Mountaineer" and look for the 1 star Terrible Reviews and you can read what we have been through. Furthermore many people couldn't get their reviews past the Trip Advisor review team because people were literally at their wits end trying to get their money back. I had to rewrite my review 9 times and water it down before I could get mine published. Same happened to others as well. To conclude, I went and rented a car in Vancouver and drove to Banff this past September 2021 just after the travel ban ended in Canada. I spent 3 days in Vancouver, 1 in Salmon Arm and 3 in Banff then flew from Calgary to Rapid City SD and spent the next 2 weeks going through US parks. I saved a bundle of money and had a great time. The Canadian Rockies and US Parks are fantastic and we don't need RM.
poor custom services
arrived at train very excited this was our wedding 40th anniversary trip arrived 7,30 left station at 9.30 due to a freight train travelled approx one hour to stop again for approx 2 hours then travelled again for 2 hours to stop again for one hour another freight train they have priority on this track we were going to kamloops and should arrive about 5-6 pm at 5pm we were told we would not make kamloop and at approx 6,4pm were told to leave train and get on a coach for a 3 hours coach ride to kamloops hotel we got there at 11pm 16 hours off travelling customer services not interested in talking just offered us £170 as a gesture for approx £4k train ride this was an insult. never worth the money they don't care wouldn't even discuss this with my travel agent.
GREED is the main goal of Rocky Mountaineer
This company cares about one thing. PROFIT. They DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE at all. It is NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Save yourself the money and go to another company that offers this - this is not the organization you ever want to do business with.
The figures above say it all 83%@1…
The figures above say it all 83%@1 Star.Agree with all previous comments. If you enjoy 13 hours on a train and join drunken passengers this is the trip for you.RM has no priority over freight trains which often have 200 wagons taking 30 minutes to pass while you sit and watch.Forget it!
Drunken behaviour and no control - Gold Leaf
Gold leaf service Train crew unable to manage intoxicated passengers but continued refilling their empty glasses. Commentary inaudible due to loud intoxicated (obscene sexual detail discussed loudly), singing passengers and train crew apologies that they could not reseat us as train was full. Guest relations apologised for experience, acknowledging there had been a problem (multiple complaints) and would use this as a learning experience for their staff! They then said no monetary compensation would be paid, but please accept our sincere apologies. Basically we have your money so go away!
Please do not bother ..Rip off
Please do not take this tour ..it’s a total rip off ..it is not worth the money one pays ..we did a two day from Vancouver to banff staying at a three star in kamloops on the Monday night .
The next day the train stood still at golden for three hours making us late to get into banff and also missing all the great views of the rockies.
No apology of partial refund from the Rocky Mountaineer .
RM very disorganized huge groups
We just returned from a trip to the Canadian Rockies on the Rocky Mountaineer and were very disappointed.
First we never expected that the number of people on the tour would be 800. That was never divulged. When you go on a cruise you know how many passengers to expect but the numbers on this land trip were totally unexpected and shocking. The night before our departure we were gathered for distribution of the boarding passes at one of the many hotels they had booked people in and were told that the Jasper segment of the trip (last 4days) was cancelled. We asked how that would impact our trip and what options we would have. They had no idea and told us we would get a call or email later that evening to give us options. We waited but never got a call and had no choice but to join the tour the next morning.
The train part of the trip was wonderful and the staff during the 4 days could not have been nicer and more accommodating . The meals and commentary along the way made it very enjoyable. It was the best part of the trip except that we had booked the Circle journey which was more expensive but ended up doubling back on the same rail line, missing Jasper
We chose the gold leaf upgrade and the hotels were fine except in Kamloops were we were lodged in a 3/5 star hotels including a Wyndham property. The Fairmount hotels had beautiful common areas but the rooms and bathrooms were very small.
The problem was the total disorganization of this company in dealing with a situation that is not new in this part of the world and their inability to communicate with their guest. We would often get information from other guests who had themselves inquired. Never once did they reach out to us until day 6 to let us know anything. We always initiated the contact and we were, unbelievably, told at some point that we needed to reach out to our travel agent for help. Finally on the sixth day we received a call letting us know that, like it or not, we were going to be staying 2 more days in Banff and returning from Banff to Vancouver on the RM train. Our original group was separated and people ended up in different hotels or on a different train car. Additionally RM staff at hotels were giving conflicting information to guests regarding luggage handling. One had a sense that the people in charge did not know what they were doing.
The Canadian Rockies are simply breathtaking and well worth a trip but do yourself a favor and avoid traveling with Rocky Mountaineer. It is quite expensive , the groups are huge and you feel herded like cattle most of the time.
Their website is a bad vending machine.
On July 2, I spent several hours researching and booking a solo journey on the Rocky Mountaineer for the last week of August. Their website was difficult, but I muddled through. I was very excited about my journey.
A week before my journey, I realized I had not received any information about my trip. I checked my spam folder - nada. I checked my AmEx - a charge from the Rocky Mountaineer billing department for > $3,000.
I called the company and was informed "their website sometimes generates a charge WITHOUT CREATING A RESERVATION." It was a KNOWN problem.
I was offered a refund or a credit for a future journey. I did receive a refund 48 hours later, but was not offered anything more than a weak apology for their known problem. I was left with a week to fill in Canada, as I already had plane tickets.
tl:dr Their website is a bad vending machine. It takes your money and gives you NOTHING.
This was our 50th anniversary
This was our 50th anniversary. Booked Golf leaf for the views but ended up with a restricted view via emergency exit. Food and crew excellent. Hotel in Kamloops basic but ok. Outside viewing platform very small. Organisation good through trip. Ac broke down and this appears to be common in high temps. Wish I could put in some photos to show how bad outlook was.
Worst vacation experience ever!!
Where to begin….. this was the worst travel experience I have ever had. Day 1 we boarded train in Vancouver. About an hour into trip people began complaining about being warm. Repeatedly told not to worry, mechanic was working on the problem. By the time we returned to our Gold Level train car, temp in car was over 100 degrees. Still hosts claimed they were fixing the problem. Passengers began to be sick….fainting, vomiting and having breathing issues. Hosts passed out cold washcloths, as if that was a solution. Finally, after 5 hours we were taken off our train car and put on a bus to Kamloops. Day 2 AC was fixed, but the excessive heat from the previous day ruined the trip. We paid for Gold level service and yet the hotel rooms we had were horrible. No AC in Jasper, small poor quality hotels in Lake Louise and Banff. In some cases people that were silver level had better accommodations than we did. Fortunately, once in Jasper our group had paid extra for private van to travel from Jasper to Lake Louise, Lake Louise to Banff and Banff to Calgary. Rocky Mountaineer failed on this too. Two weeks before our departure they told us they could not honor these reservations due to staffing issues! After a frantic search I found a company to handle this. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say everything Rocky Mountaineer was responsible for was awful. There customer service is non existent and they take no responsibility for anything. Canada is a beautiful country and the people are lovely. Save your money and your health and visit, but DO NOT go on the Rocky Mountaineer. Several of us are still suffering from the awful train experience. I had a severe asthma attack while on the train that required emergency medical attention. The Canadian Government agency that is concerned with safety has opened a full investigation into this experience.
