We spent more time dealing with the van than enjoying it
The owner is a nice guy and I have no complaints about the hospitality. It was a last-minute booking and everything went smoothly at first. We were supposed to collect Warrior, but as it needed an NCT, we were offered Shelby instead.
Shelby is from 1995, and we knew we were hiring a vintage campervan — that was actually one of the reasons we chose Retro Camper Hire. The van was clean for its age, so we weren't expecting anything modern or perfect. The website mentions a Smart TV, but Shelby only had the TV mount. This wasn't a big issue for us.
Unfortunately, the reliability was a different story. After around two hours of driving, we stopped at a petrol station and the van wouldn't start at all. With the help of some kind people there, my husband discovered a loose battery cable and fixed it.
We continued to Kerry, but after arriving at our campsite around 11pm and switching the engine off, the van wouldn't start again. The next morning, my husband and people at the campsite found another issue with bad connections in the wiring underneath the steering wheel. We also noticed the battery didn't seem to charge properly unless the van was being driven or revved.
The owner answered our calls, but we were advised to find a garage in Kerry to repair the van and to cancel the breakdown assistance. In my opinion, customers shouldn't have to spend their holiday diagnosing problems and finding garages for a rental vehicle.
Because of all this, I can't really comment on how well the campervan's other facilities work, such as the lights or electricity, because we simply didn't have enough time to properly use them. At the campsite we were connected to mains electricity and only used it to charge our phones. We used the toilet and it worked fine. As we were connected to campsite electricity most of the time, I can't say how the electrical system would perform for a couple of days without a hookup.
We were lucky both times this happened we were somewhere safe with helpful people around. We didn't want to risk breaking down somewhere remote, so our planned four-day road trip became only two days.
We were initially told we would receive a full refund, but this was later changed to being charged for two days. On the positive side, our deposit was refunded very quickly and there were no additional charges beyond those two days' rental.
The owner told us Shelby was due to be hired by someone else the day after we returned it. Maybe we were simply unlucky, maybe the problems were fixed before the next rental, or maybe someone else could experience similar issues — who knows. I can only comment on what happened during our trip.
I'm not writing this review to say bad things about the company or the owner. I'm sharing our experience so other customers can be aware of what happened to us and make their own decision. I understand that a vintage campervan will have its quirks, but there's a difference between the character of an older vehicle and reliability problems that affect your trip.
The reason I'm giving one star is not because of the owner or the staff. We rented the campervan specifically to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary with a four-day camping road trip, and unfortunately we weren't able to have the experience we paid for. The trip had to be cut short after two days, and even those two days didn't really feel like a holiday, as so much of our time was spent dealing with problems with the van and worrying about whether it would start again.
For us, the main purpose of renting the campervan simply wasn't accomplished, which is why I'm rating our overall experience one star despite having no complaints about the staff or their hospitality.
1 star is generous
1 star is generous. Van wasn't exactly roadworthy.
Lets start from the begining. On arrival, the van was not ready, nor was the actual van we booked (Bertha) available. We were given the option of 3 vans and picked the closest one to what we had booked(Roadie), however the one we booked was supposed to have a shower, which this one didn't, and it was supposed to have a pull out awning, which this one didn't. We'll get over that! Handover was very basic and only because we have camped previously and knew some questions to ask, we wouldn't have had an electric cable in the van for hook up in campsites. We were charged 90euro for a gas cylinder and sent a video with some very basic information about the van.
Anyway, we packed up quickly as it had started raining, and went on our way. Now, I appreciate that the van is vintage, but basic maintenance of a vehicle is simply non negotiable.
We arrived at our first campsite and went to cook in the kitchenette and it was absolutely filthy. The van in general was filthy. Not exactly the nicest start, having to clean the van properly after someone elses use. Thankfully we brought out own cookware, plates and so on as what was there was not exactly hygienic.
When putting the lower bed together the bed slats were not in good working order, they were twisted, broken, some were missinig and didn't fit properly.
As disappointing as all of this was we decided we would make the best of our little holiday and all in all we had a lovely time.
On our second last night (a Friday) we got a flat tyre. I appreciate this can happen with any rental or if we had gone in our own car, but there was no spare with this van (we had been told this was due to insurance purposes). We called the roadside assistance number that is displayed on the windscreen and they told us that they hadn't worked with Retro campers since 2022. We had no choice but to wait until the next morning to sort it out. We managed to pump the wheel enough to get to a garage that could change the tyre for us. Keeping in mind that it is now late Saturday morning and most garages close at lunch time if at all and only one nearby stocked the tyre we needed. The mechanic told us that the tyre he removed had a number of cracks and it was only a matter of time before this had happened. He also said that the other back tyre wouldnt last much longer. Now...I believe that tyres are pretty basic when it comes to vehicle maintenance, retro or not!! Retro campers told us that the tyre was our own expense so we did not get a refund for our 100euro for the unsafe tyres that were on our van.
I would also like to say that we had our 1 year old daughter with us, who we had to put in the passenger seat as there was no other safe way of travelling with her. The fumes that I could smell coming into the cab while driving made me light headed and this was so concerning with my daughter sitting next to me.
The doors were so difficult to lock and unlock. It was like a puzzle to figure out which door to lock first and which to open first.
The van had gaps in its body work where at times wet got in.
Other issues included:
- table was literally duct taped together and kept toppling over when using it.
- Tv didnt work
- internal heater didnt work
- water cylinder was disgusting
- indicator bulb to turn right didnt work
- One window didn't open (next to table)
- Sliding door didnt fully close
To round it all up, we had a lovely holiday in the west of Ireland but we will never use this company again. Stating that a van that you are renting out to people is retro is not an excuse to avoid basic maintenance of a vehicle. The van was unsafe to be on the road. With a little bit of work, the van could have been absolutely amazing. You can keep the van retro but update it and clean it!!!!!!!
Great family experience
I'd highly recommend this retro camper, we used the camper to sleep, eat and for some sightseeing, other than that we spent all our time out on the beaches or parks.
Collection was at 3pm on Wednesday and the camper was ready and clean and tidy as it should be, I was brought around the entire camper and explained how to use everything and even opened the bonnet and showed how mechanically well maintained it was i also got a video sent to me aswell . Unlike some of the reviews i read the Terms and Conditions, were you clearly have to pay a €1000 deposit which is refundable pending on vehicle being handed back over in the same condition you received it in. We drove around wexford and plugged in on all nights and everything worked perfectly fine.
We had a great experience and had a real retro feel. Upon returning the camper I cleaned it down and refilled the fuel to the same level when I received it. And with no hassle at all I received my full deposit back. I would recommend this to everyone who is looking for a retro family getaway around ireland very professional service. And I will be definitely hiring again.
Avoid: The cheap option will end up being expensive
I would not recommend Retro Camper Hire. What looked like a cheap campervan rental ended up being a very expensive and stressful experience.
Our problems started before we even got on the road. Our pickup was delayed by around an hour despite having a scheduled time, and the van hadn't even been cleaned when we arrived. The handover felt rushed, and we were not properly informed about the vehicle or its particularities. It felt more like they wanted to get us on the road than make sure we understood what we were renting.
We were given a WhatsApp number for emergencies, but were specifically told to use it as little as possible.
From the beginning, we reported that the doors felt extremely fragile. We also reported problems with the electrical system and the battery indicator, which never turned green as we had been told it would. Because of this, we could not reliably use the fridge, lights or water system during most of the trip, except when connected to mains electricity at a campsite.
The kitchen utensils were also provided in a disgraceful state of cleanliness, and the bed and other parts of the interior were far from what we would consider good enough.
Later, the sliding door came off its rail. We contacted them and were told to fix it ourselves because it was "very simple." While trying to do this, the door suddenly closed on one of our fingers, causing a fractured phalanx. We eventually had to take the van to a local mechanic ourselves to have the door properly refitted.
We did accidentally cause a small scratch to the van and accept responsibility for it. However, the van itself was already in very poor cosmetic condition, with numerous scratches, paint deterioration and previous repairs. Despite this, we were held to a completely different standard when it came to our minor damage, they asked us to pay €680 for repairing the scratch.
We were told the repair was being carried out by an independent workshop. However, after looking into the workshop and its owner's Instagram, we found information indicating that the workshop was also owned by the same person/company behind the rental business. This raised serious concerns about the transparency of the repair charge.
And then came the final straw: before even providing us with the repair quote, we were offered €50 if we left a 5-star review. For us, this says a lot about the company's approach to reviews and customer feedback.
The van did get us around Ireland mechanically, and we understood from the beginning that we were renting an old campervan. But being old is not an excuse for poor maintenance, inadequate communication, poor cleanliness, unsafe equipment or disproportionate repair charges.
In the end, what looked like a cheap rental became a very expensive and stressful experience. We would not recommend this company.
We had a great time renting from Retro…
We had a great time renting from Retro Camper Hire, we love the Retro / Vintage experience, will definitely be back
Vans are decrepit and the service is just as bad..
If you want a campervan on its last legs with barely functioning amenities, book with Retro Campers.
We hired a camper van for a 9-day holiday in July 2026. We had a great trip with friends, but the campervan and hire experience were appalling.
Collection was immediately unprofessional. Our friend was due to collect the van at 12pm, but it wasn’t ready until 1:45pm. It was discovered the indicators weren’t working. They were eventually fixed.
Due to the Retro Camper team being very busy with other guests there was virtually no handover or explanation of how the water, toilet, shower, sink, or cooker worked. The toilet flush didn’t work, and the water pressure was so weak that even washing up was difficult, let alone showering. In practice, the shower and toilet were unusable.
There was also no gas canister for the cooker, something that is very unclear when booking or clearly displayed on the website.
Other problems included:
- A supposedly four-person sleeping setup where the top bunk had only around 1–1.5ft of clearance from the roof, making it practically unusable.
- Faulty electrics: only one speaker worked, the interior lights failed after the first evening, and the fridge drains the battery unless plugged in at a campsite.
- The van wasn’t watertight. Rain came through the windscreen seals and cracks around the doors, and the roof lining was collapsing from being waterlogged.
- One windscreen wiper stopped working during the trip.
-“Bedding” cost an extra €25 each but consisted of disappointing sleeping bags with no bed sheets.
Since we returned the van slightly late
€150 was deducted from our deposit. We weren’t told about this €150 charge when returning it. Instead, it was repeatedly suggested that if we left a 5-star review, they would potentially not charge us for the late return fee.
These campers may have been great 10 years ago when they were renovated and the website photos were taken, but in our experience Stella is now far from her best. We were sold a functioning retro campervan with a toilet, cooker, shower and sink. What we received was a leaking, poorly maintained vehicle with amenities that barely functioned.
Read the other reviews and make your own mind up. There are plenty of genuine 1-star reviews from similarly disappointed customers.

Essentially this business is a scam
Essentially this business is a scam - extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. Please don’t ignore the multitude of 1* reviews on here.
Our van was not at all ready when we arrived at our allocated collection time. I waited a total of 2 hours for the van to be prepared for us. This was a combination of cleaning time and repairs to the indicators was required.
The loo flush did not function on the van. It was suggested to use the shower head as a flush. The water pressure is far too low for this purpose.
The leisure battery has a very small capacity. Using simple amenities like the tap or internal lights will very quickly drain the battery unless you are plugged in to an external power source at a campsite for example. The interior lights also only lasted two days before breaking completely.
There are plenty of speakers in the van but only one functions that is next to the driver.
If raining, water will enter the van in several places. Through the top of the windscreen, and via the main door. Pictures display the large gaps around the door frame.
Lastly, don’t expect a detailed handover. The handover was extremely brief with very little information given on the vans amenities. Gas is not provided as standard, and neither is bedding. ‘Bedding’ is provided at €25 per set. Please be aware a set of ‘bedding’ is a sleeping bag and a pillow.
Would highly unrecommend this website
Would highly unrecommend this website. It’s the dodgiest set up of all time and your man that runs it is a complete scam artist. Pulls fines out of his hole when you drop the van back and they are completely over priced. That’s if the van even makes it back. Everyone needs to know this so they can steer as clear as possible of this horrific operation
Avoid this business
Avoid this business. The campers are filthy, nothing works and the cookware was filthy. We were told that there would be cutlery etc but there was only a bag of plastic spoons, dirty cups and dirty plates. They charged me €90 for a gas canister and even thoigh the cooker didnt work they didnt refund the money. The drivers wing mirror on the jalopy they gave me wouldnt stay in place which made it dangerous to drive. When I complained they just said they checked everything and it was all working. They're gangsters. Avoid at all costs. Might be a bit cheaper but it will ruin your plans.
Great campervan trip! ❤️❤️
Absolutely outstanding experience with Retro Camper Hire!
From the moment we made our booking, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. The communication was excellent, and the team were always available to answer any questions we had.
Our campervan was presented in immaculate condition—clean, modern, comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed for our adventure. It drove beautifully and was a pleasure to travel around Ireland in.
What really sets Retro Camper Hire apart is the exceptional customer service. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and take great pride in maintaining their fleet to a very high standard. The check-in process was detailed but relaxed, and we left feeling confident and excited for our trip.
We created memories that will last a lifetime, and a big part of that was thanks to the quality of the campervan and the fantastic service we received.
Without question, this is the best campervan hire company we've ever used. We wouldn't consider booking anywhere else and will definitely be returning for another adventure.
Highly recommended to anyone looking for a stress-free, high-quality campervan experience in Ireland!
Disappointing
Myself and my husband hired one of these vans (the warrior) for a festival last weekend. The van on the website looked okay, nothing spectacular but fine for a few days at a festival.
What we collected was a different story..... where do I start?
Firstly.... It wasn't cleaned properly inside. The floor was pealing up and even though it was being "cleaned" when we arrived, I think no amount of cleaning could make it clean..... It needs to be ripped up and replaced. The covers on the seats/bed were stained....two of the cushions had ground in food stuck on them.
It's advertised as a four berth on the website however, you could barely fit two people. We had to sleep top to toe to be able to fit on the pull out bed.
In the last few days since we rented the van there has been a few new reviews giving five stars....I really don't know how!
Our friends also hired one of these vans (the roadie) and their van was in worse condition!
I wasn't going to write a review, I just thought sure leave it as we had a ball at the festival and we laughed about the whole thing but when I seen the new reviews come up, it annoyed me, as other people will be misled like we were!
The van we hired and our friends van are the only two I can comment on but if they were given a little TLC, cleaned up, painted, new flooring and honestly advertised they would be a lot better.
I get that they're "retro" but that shouldn't mean dirty and broken!

Horrendous Experience - AVOID!
The camper van I got was not the one I originally booked. The replacement van was in a poor state. The interior was dirty, bathroom cubicle smelled of urine, and several fittings were either broken, missing, not working, were installed incorrectly, etc. The vehicle battery failed twice, requiring me to source jump leads on both occasions and a willing car to assist. Concerningly, the tax and insurance discs displayed on the vehicle were out of date!!!
The handover consisted of sending a video (with insufficient detail) of the van half an hour before pickup and being pointed to where the van was parked on the road. No “comprehensive handover” as advertised on their website was carried out, and nothing was demonstrated as working at pickup.
When I raised the issues with the vehicle on day 2 of a 4 day booking, there was no offer of a replacement vehicle and no out-of-hours assistance (other than breakdown assistance). I was told that I was too far away for them to assist, despite being a half an hour drive away.
When I raised concerns, I was met with confrontational and argumentative responses. Nothing was their fault. Instead of listening to genuine issues, user incompetence was repeatedly the default reply, even though it was clear there were items broken / not installed correctly. I was offered a €50 refund as compensation for the issues I experienced, which I didn’t accept as it didn’t reflect the condition of the vehicle, the problems encountered, or the overall lack of service provided.
I was warned by the company that if I left a 1-star review, they would respond by publicly posting CCTV footage of me and, more concerningly, posting my signed rental document (containing my personal information and banking details). This intimidation tactic is extremely inappropriate and raises serious concerns around their handling of customer personal data. The company has made it clear that they intend to respond to any review I post and challenge it; however, everything stated here is an honest and factual account of my personal experience.
I would encourage people to read both the positive and negative reviews carefully and make up their own minds. A number of the 5-star reviews are left by people sharing the same surname as the owner (Byrne). That may be entirely coincidental, but it really stood out after my hire experience, particularly when comparing them with the detailed 1-star reviews describing poor experiences very similar to my own.
Based on my experience, I would AVOID, AVOID, AVOID this company!
