RentAuto is an untrustworthy company who will find any excuse to overcharge you. They help them selves to the Credit Card without even asking or take permission.
I had a very disappointing experience with RentAuto, and I would strongly advise anyone considering renting from this company to read the terms and conditions very carefully.

In my opinion, this company operates in an unethical and highly unprofessional manner, appearing to look for any excuse to impose additional charges and penalties on customers.

The most unacceptable part of my experience was that they charged my credit card without my authorization or agreement. One example was a penalty of EUR 55 for an alleged "out-of-office return." My rental agreement required the car to be returned at 07:00, yet I had already parked the vehicle at 06:48—12 minutes before the scheduled return time. Despite returning the car early, I was still charged this excessive penalty. I find this completely unreasonable and unfair.

To make matters worse, I made my reservation through VIP Cars, expecting that they would assist in resolving this dispute. Unfortunately, they offered no meaningful support and simply failed to advocate for their customer.

This experience has left me feeling that customer service is not a priority for either RentAuto or VIP Cars. Instead of treating customers fairly, they seem more interested in generating additional revenue through questionable charges.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend either RentAuto or VIP Cars. If you decide to rent through them, be extremely cautious, document everything, take timestamped photos and videos when returning the vehicle, and carefully monitor your credit card statements for any unexpected charges.

I had no problems at all with them, the woman who I collected the car from and dropped it off with was really friendly and helpful when the Faro Airport drop off system failed to see our registration plate. She sorted it out with no fuss and no extra hidden charges for anything. When we collected the car I was happy to find out that there was no "you need to pay a deposit " hidden fees.
I booked through Zest car rental who handled all the insurance stuff , and then RentAuto were totally cool to deal with the Portuguese side of things.
Just a tip : they will ask you to drop off within a 10 minute window at Faro airport (because the drop off zone is free for 10 mins) , don't panic. It's like 5 euro per extra 10 minutes. If you get there too early just be cool and give them the cash too cover the overtime. It's worth it.

I have rented vehicles from RentAuto via Zest for several years. The vehicles provided are typically new and in good condition. Once, my vehicle wasn't in stock and I was given a free upgrade to a larger model.
Never had any issues with returning vehicles, or surprise charges for "damage", etc. I usually get a small debit a couple of weeks later for the motorway tolls.
I recommend always booking through Zest for peace-of-mind, as they provide free damage waiver insurance, with optional top-up for wheels/windscreens, etc.

Avoid this company!!! Old cars and rude staff. They only have Fiat Tipo petrol and old. Drink a lot of petrol because it’s too old. I contacted them about to change the car and got a rude lady shouting with me. I said you can’t talk like that and she ask me to go away. Probably company owner. No respect at all.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.
Rent Auto are cowboys.
Collection Process: Staff were rude and rushed us. No documentation or pictures supplied of the vehicle prior to collection. There was no opportunity to check the car prior to driving away.
We were told that the airport car park ticket was about to expire and so we could not do a walk round or take our own pictures.

Upon arrival to our destination, pictures were taken of existing damage and sent to Rent Auto.

Upon return of the car, staff were aggressive and threatening in accusing us of damage that was pre-existing. They disregarded the photos I had taken stating that they were taken an hour after the car had been collected.

Whilst Zest have been helpful in being the go-between ourselves and Rent Auto, I am shocked that they are acting as a vendor for such a bad supplier.
I now have to question if other Zest suppliers are as bad and if I would risk using Zest again.

Fantastic hassle free rental from Faro airport. By far that best we have rented from. Whilst hirers from other companies were still filling in paperwork and inspecting their vehicles we were done and away.
Fast, friendly and none of the usual tricks for extracting big deposits and extra for anything they can think off. Simple fuel policy of return with same as on collection. Return of car is to departures where someone greets you , has a cursory check of fuel etc and within literally a minute you are away. Very highly recommended.

Used rentauto in Sept 2020. The toll charges were not paid by them for my visit- no one got in touch to say there was a problem. Now received a bill in dec 2023 for £540 for the £57 unpaid toll charges of 3 years ago. Admin fee and penalty charges accrued. No one got in touch with me for 3 years- apparently Rentauto are too busy to get in touch. Do not use them.

I've hired plenty of cars over the years from a variety of cheap providers - generally done ok, as long as you know how to handle the inevitable attempts to fleece you.

Have just come back from Portugal - and used Rentauto - encouraged by some unusually good reviews (how many of these companies get over 9.1 in reviews?!). Brilliant experience. They were the cheapest quote. Picked up at Lisbon, dropped off at Faro (no extra charge). Car upgraded to new Ford Focus estate, really clean and nice. Very polite and friendly reps. No fuss, 5 mins paperwork max at start - none at Faro. Cursory check (none of the fiddly trying to find a new scratch). Excellent - highly recommend.
