Real Community & Support
Recess is a rare find in the sea of online homeschool options….I’ve spent the last 6 years going through trial and error of hundreds of curriculum options, apps, and online classes. So many of them promised to be great, but ended up as a huge disappointment (and waste of money). Recess is not one of those programs.
Support: From day 1, you and your child will be paired up with a direct contact to communicate with anytime you need. Response is quick, you are speaking directly to this person, not a bot or customer service line. Your child will also be immediately welcomed into a community of peers, some of which are specifically designated to help new friends acclimate to the Recess culture, and find their way around within the virtual area. (They have avatars that can “walk” from space to space, but also communicate via video and microphone once they join an activity or class).
Real Life Skills: Your child will soon find that this is a space where their ideas are respected and celebrated…it’s not adults making all of the choices! The kids are encouraged to offer input on how the entire community is run, what class topics they’d like to see, how the apps themselves look etc. Each student has their own unique set of skills and interests, which is valued to allow them to truly be a part of the big picture. They will build apps, games, publish stories, create YouTube channels, run book clubs, science experiments, have Socratic discussions, learn to engineer rockets, learn systems operation, public speaking, podcasting, art….the list goes on. But it goes beyond just learning things in a classroom. The real magic is when they begin to build smaller communities within the larger Recess community to collaborate on projects, or get feedback from other peer groups. It’s “real life” application.
Guides: The adults in the Recess space are called guides. They all are chosen to be top notch. So the instruction here is exceptional (if you’ve been on other platforms, you might understand why this matters so much!) They really interact and engage with students, and they teach the content from personal experience. Some of them are top YouTubers, published authors, or involved in actual space programs. You are not getting instructors reading straight from a website, with no clue what they are even teaching. These instructors are passionate about the topic they’ve been chosen to lead.
Real friendships: The kids develop real friendships at Recess. They are able to socialize whenever they want through the safe, secure (moderated) platform. There are also beginning to be in-person meetups for groups that decide to coordinate in various locations. They stay engaged after classes by completing challenges and competitions that match their interests.
Parent groups: There is also a growing parent community where you can join weekly activities yourself. To just chat, play games, get to know the community.
Recess is a valuable resource for any homeschoolers looking for online community combined with academic instruction. In the past 2 years, I’ve watched my son go from a shy, unsure kid to an excited, confident teen with so many new interests, he runs out of time
