Our tour guide was basically a driver

Our tour guide was basically a driver. He did not explain anything that we looked at. When asked about particular details about various sites, he said, "I don't know." Great tour route but our tour guide needs to retire.

Bus left without us before departure time - do not trust

We had booked return trip to the airport through this service. The first was fine.

The second was a disaster. The email told me specifically that pick up was 12-12:30 and departure was 12:30. However my phone ticket only specified 12:30 (very confusing). Any person would believe that meant to be there between 12-12:30 to prepare for departure at 12:30?

We arrived around 12:15 thinking we were being early and trying to be careful and waited for nearly 25 mins and the bus didn’t come. I called the company and a very sarcastic and snarky lady told me the bus had left at 12 and it was my fault.

IF the bus leaves at 12, why on earth do you put 12:30 on your tickets????? The communication is absolutely ridiculous and makes no sense whatsoever! It is so easy to tell someone to be there for 12. If the bus leaves at 12 then departure time is 12!!!

This meant we had to pay £100 for a taxi to the airport.

Thanks for ruining the end of our holiday.

Airport Transfer was a No Show

Totally let us down on our airport transfer back to KEF. Stated they emailed me but I received no such correspondence, even so, if they are cancelling the transport which I relied on to get back to the airport, you’d think they would phone call. They made no such attempt. I ended up having to take a 16000 ISK taxi. Please avoid this company as they will let you down and have unsatisfactory resolutions and customer service.

Excellent tour with Gray Line Iceland…

Excellent tour with Gray Line Iceland to see the erupting Volcano at Fagradalsfjall. The tour guide Matthias was very knowledgeable and didn’t rush us at all, he took time to chat to everyone and was a pleasure to go on the tour with.

The eruption was incredible to see as a Brit with nothing like this at home it really was a once in a life time experience. It’s a fair hike (the easier route is covered by Lava now) but Matthias ensured we were all together and safe doing the tough uphill and kept the group safe and aware.

When we went the Lava could still be seen spurting from the crater and would highly recommend Gray Line and this tour.

Third trip to Iceland and sure when we inevitably come back again we will use Grayline again.

Only giving one star because I cant…

Only giving one star because I cant give zero. Booked Northern Lights tour in March which due to the weather got cancelled. It's now June and still no refund!!!
They keep claiming they've refunded it. They why isn't it credited to my account then Grayline???
Fobbed off continually and it's now in the hands of credit card provider. DO NOT USE!!!

Golden circle tour

Golden circle tour. Basic transportation for sure but the guide, Darren, was exceptional. Knowledgeable, amiable, informative and possessed of a great sense of humor. More useful information than a tourist information center.

Went on a northern lights tour and it…

Went on a northern lights tour and it is not the companies fault we only saw glimpses. What is there fault is that they had no communication and there was a head guide who did not say you won't be able to see anything anymore so knock it on the head instead. He got very protective and said I'm in charge and made everyone wait hours for no apparent reason. Please use a more reputable company. All they seemed to be interested in was taking you to a restaurant where I have no doubt they made money off you

We used Gray Line Iceland for our trips…

We used Gray Line Iceland for our trips to see the Northern Lights and the Golden Circle. Both trips were fabulous and exceeded our expectations. A special shout out to Darren as the guide for the Golden Circle trip and for Grimsi (guide) and Hilmar (driver) for the highlight of our trip to see the Northern Lights.

Superb.

Used these for Golden Circle, Northern Lights and Airport Transfer.

GC was excellent, interesting and knowledgable guide who did an extra little stop so we could see some ponies. I think we lucked out as the main bus was full so we actually had a more intimate tour on a mini bus. The sights were great and just the right amount of time at each stop. Dagmar was the driver and she got us a 10% discount at the waterfall lunch stop.

NL was also excellent. Lucky enough to see them first time, spectacular! Only down side to this was waiting around in -8 degrees for them to turn up, not Gray Line’s fault though. Given that though maybe one of the geothermal spring NL tours might’ve been better. Margaret was the tour guide, she was funny, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic!

Airport transfer was with the minimum of fuss.

We have just returned from a wonderful…

We have just returned from a wonderful break to this delightful and exciting island. We had a few trips with Grayline and found the company efficient with comfortable coaches. My only regret was the Northern Lights tour. The lights weren't dancing which obviously Grayline cannot be held responsible for but the chances of seeing them had been forecast as only 2 out of 10 for some days before. Two seems low to us so maybe it was a bit of a stretch running the tour that night. Five hours seemed a long time especially with a well spoken but uninteresting guide. The tour ran the following night and we could have gone for free but the forecast had dropped to below 2 so we didn't bother. The other tours were excellent.

Our experience with gray line was…excellent!

Our experience with gray line was really good. They were always on time and they were very friendly and informative. We felt safe and looked after. Communication between them and our hotel receptionist was excellent. They also communicate well between their colleagues and they knew the times of different tours so always got you back on time. Great experience from us!

Budget your time elsewhere

We used Gray Line also for a Golden Circle tour and airport transfer. Buses always on time, drivers seem safety minded-so all good there.
I guess I thought the northern lights hunt would be more like an african safari, where the drivers-even with competing companies-are all on the radio to each other giving feed back on sightings and you're on the move searching for the northern lights. But the way this works is there is a head guide over what might be half a dozen or more full Gray Line buses who determines where you'll go to literally wait to see if the lights appear. We happened to meet the head guide the first night who said he had about a 33% success rate-which was considered above average. The first night the clouds were predicted to move out, but they didn't-no sighting. The second night, there was auroral activity, but it was faint and would fade and reappear. Even though we did see something, it was not considered a high enough quality sighting. So theoretically we could go back within 2 years and get a "free" rebooking. But here's the deal-each night out is 5 hours. So for the 10 hours I have invested, I could have gone on a day tour somewhere else into Iceland and actually have seen something really cool. And if I go back to Iceland, it will probably be in the summer, but there are no lights that can be seen then. To summarize-nothing to fault with Gray Line's execution, but this adventure is simply not worth the time.

Grayline NorthernLights excursions

The Northern Lights excursion is misleading. I believe the excursion goes out with little expectations that any lights will be visible

The company can provide a daily number from 1 to 10
When I called the number that was given was 6. When I got on the bus after paying my fee the number given by the guide was 3

Not sure what the significance of the number but I would recommend asking a simple question: What is the ratio of total number of successful excursion vs non successful. I’m guessing the positive out come is probably less than 30 %

No one would or could provide that number. As someone that lives with statistics I would most likely decline a less than even odds

Also the offer to allow additional trips over 2 years is worthless if one is on a limited tour and not likely that there will be a return

It’s a fun bus ride to a tourist park at midnight but go with virtually no expectation for 5 USD . If you have a car it would use 5 dollars in petro

Amazing tour, great guide, super service

We did the northern lights deluxe tour, which was great. everything perfect. A MUST DO while in Iceland. We were so lucky to see the northern lights on the first night we went on the tour. It took a while until we found the best place to see this magical spectacle. Our guide and bus driver were amazing in chasing the lights and checking for updates. With the Deluxe Tour we had the advantage that we had more time to go to different places and chase them. The blanket and hot chocolate were also very helpful to stay outside for all the time. On the way our guide told us about the northern lights and how to take photos. She was a hobby photographer and took amazing photos of the northern lights and helped everyone in the group to find the right settings. We were lucky to see them on the first evening but Gayline would offer everyone to go on another tour if you can´t see them. I would always recommend the Deluxe tour and Grayline again as it feels more private, comfortable and very well organized, with pick ups and drop offs at the hotel on time. A thank you to our tour guide again!

They never showed up, lied about it, we nearly missed our flight and had to pay £100 for taxi

Awful awful awful. Ended up spending nearly £100 on a replacement taxi because Grayline never arrived to pick us up at our stop and then outright lied about it when we called them, claiming they had been at the stop (we were there 10 minutes early and waited the entire time - they never showed).

I've seen lots of other reviews (particularly in Google Reviews if you're interested) saying the same thing happened to them with Grayline - seriously just listen to these reviews. Grayline might be a bit cheaper than the reputable companies but it is NOT worth the stress of nearly missing your flight and all the massive costs this can incur (we had to pay nearly £100 for a replacement taxi, which Grayline refused to reimburse) - and judging by the amount of similar stories here, there is every chance they won't show. If you complain to them, they will just lie to you and claim to have proof the bus was there (proof that they never provide you with, of course). Just go with one of the reputable bus companies!

Avoid at all costs - Bullies that have no clue what customer service is

We used Grayline for a number of tours in March and everyone was poor. This is the original email i sent to them upon returning.

We’ve just returned from a short break to Iceland and used Grayline for a number of different things, however we have come to find a number of issues with the service we’ve expereinced.

Blue Lagoon

I walked from Foss Hotel Reykjavik to the booking office so that I could talk to someone In person and I was told that if we booked for 6.30pm then we would arrive at the lagoon at 7pm. Unfortuantely we were greatly mis-informed. We were not told that it was a shuttle from our hotel to the terminal nor were we told that the tour wouldn’t actually set off until 7pm, meaning we didn’t arrive at the lagoon until shortly before 8pm. From the information provided to us about the tour we booked another tour the next day (also with yourselves), which meant we had to be up early for our 8.30am pickup. This meant we could not stay at the lagoon long as we wanted and had to rush to catch the 9pm bus back. We only experienced 5-10 minutes in the lagoon and didn’t manage to finnish our very very rushed drinks. We also missed out on the mud mask and the general lagoon experience, leaving us wholeheartedly deflated.

I would also like to express my concern regarding the windscreen of the coach we are travelling in. It had 2 large cracks in the windscreen. One at the bottom and one running in the middle, from top to bottom. This is not safe on a general day to day basis, given the high winds and bad weather at the time of our tour, this was extremely dangerous.

South Iceland, waterfall and black beach
The tour itself was ok, although we did have numerous issues with our bus, resulting in us changing busses after around 6 hours of the tour. Given the issues with the bus on the first tour, this caused a lot of anxiety during the tour. It was also worrying that given the issues with the bus (a side panel being removed and the wipers not working) the driver did not take it easy. Instead he was speeding contantly and in our opinion driving unsafely. On the road to the black beach he was driving 64 on a 50 road. I believe some passangers asked for the driver to drive slower as they were worried too.

We also had trouble understanding or keeping our concentration with our guide. She could speak English, that is not the issue. However it was very broken and not fluent. This led to stories being long winded or broken up and not enjoyable.

To finish off the tour, we didn’t even get dropped off at our hotel as described on your website. Instead we were dropped about a 5 mintue walk from the hotel. This is not what we paid for nor is it acceptable. It is also very frustrating to then see the bus drive past you as you walk to your hotel in freezing conditions.


Drop off procedure

It was also never explained to us that we would need to catch a shuttle for every tour to go to the terminal. This is particulalry frustrating as you lose time having to get the shuttle in the first place. If it’s an early tour this can mean less sleep or time to get breakfast. We did the golden circle tour with a different firm and you start the tour as soon as your leave the hotel.

Due to the above we’ve had a very limited and disspaointing experience. Had we known the above prior to booking, we most certainly wouldn’t have booked any of the tours. I feel in particular being made to walk to your hotel to save time when you’ve been on a 10 hour tour is ridiculous.

Since my initial complaint, i've been emailing someone called Gurry, who just pretty much said everything was our own fault and that a cracked windscreen is also perfectly safe in high winds and rain. He has also contacted my employer to let them know i've been emailing him (Accusing me of threatening and intimidating, i did neither)

So not only do they not offer any kind of customer service, they run an terrible tour operation, and their response is to bully and threaten you so that you leave them alone.

Very poor, use other providers

Very poor; transfer from airport dropped us far from hotel at 01:30.

Also booked the Northern Lights tour with them, which was cancelled by them due to bad weather which was fair enough. But then when I can't reschedule because I'm leaving, you owe me a refund. This was far, far more hassle than what it should have been.
