ESL Johannesburg February 2025

Having attended all the ESL events in South Africa, I can confidently say that this one has yet again exceeded expectations. The overall program was exceptional, with each speaker delivering outstanding presentations. It is difficult to choose a favourite as every speaker was remarkable. The event successfully conveyed the message that the EA role is a profession, not just a job, emphasizing the need for flexibility, resilience, a strategic outlook, and meticulous attention to detail. Libby and Chynna were so inspirational as well.

The Modern-Day Assistants workshop was very insightful, and the interactive sessions were great! Lucy Brazier's expertise and passion for the profession were evident throughout the sessions, and her ability to connect with the audience made the experience truly memorable.

Speakers Need to Engage Deliberately.

I enjoyed the professionalism, the venue, the Speakers when they were on the stage and the event technicians knew what they were doing.

What I did not enjoy at all was that the Speakers did not mingle, interact and engage with us. It was specifically advertised that the Speakers would be available during Tea Breaks and Lunch Times and at the Gala Dinner to engage with the delegates. This was mainly the reason why I attended - an opportunity to open up about my challenges and speak to seasoned PA's who have coped with far higher stress levels. And not by networking with my peers - they wanted to catch up and they have the same challenges.

Unfortunately my observation of the two days were that the Speakers were only mixing and sitting with their co-presenters and I've left the conference feeling that I've met some wonderful, good people - but not that I have a few nuggets in my pocket of what I can do better in being more effective in my direct environment.

And maybe I did hear it - but I did not have an opportunity to reflect with someone 'who walked the room'.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I’m really pleased to hear that you appreciated the professionalism of the event, the venue, the speakers' stage presence, and the technical delivery. It means a lot to us that those elements landed well.

That said, I’m sorry to hear that you left the event feeling disappointed by the level of engagement you experienced with the speakers. We completely understand how valuable those personal interactions can be - especially when you're looking for insight, inspiration, and support from those who have walked a similar path.

We do place a great deal of emphasis on speaker accessibility. Unlike many events where speakers arrive just in time for their session and leave straight after, we ask our speakers to attend as much of the event as possible, to be present during tea breaks, lunch, and the gala dinner, and to make themselves available for conversations, questions, and photos. I can confirm that every one of our speakers honoured this request. For example, they were seated across several tables at the gala dinner, and most of the speakers sat at tables with delegates during lunch to enable connection and conversation with delegates.

It is true that during the conference sessions, we do seat our speakers together. This allows those who might be working to continue to do so without disturbing other delegates, and for those who are slightly nervous and running through their presentations ahead of sessions to do so - even the best of us can still get nervous. That said, I completely appreciate how this might have given the impression that the speakers were more inward-facing than intended.

It is also worth saying, however, that while we encourage our speakers to be open and approachable, it helps when delegates take the first step to initiate a conversation. Every speaker would have been more than happy to talk to you and share their expertise had you approached them.

Your point is well taken: we will explore how we can better facilitate those more personal, reflective discussions in future.

Reflection on an Outstanding Event

It was a great experience with a lot of valuable takeaways. Lucy Brazier and her team did an excellent job in securing wonderful speakers. This was truly one of the best conferences I have ever attended. The organization, the content, and the overall atmosphere made it an unforgettable event.

I'm Important Too

Firstly the course made me excited about my role as an EPA. I didn't have that passion before until i attended the training. I felt inspired and for the first time i felt like i was an important part of my organisation. I now look forward to doing my best in my role each and every day! Wonderful learning experience!

I loved the interaction with all the wonderful women. I loved meeting all the different ladies.
I found the AI talk very helpful and am very keen to explore that more.
I found the personal stories very moving and was in awe of how strong and persevering the women were.
