Bare rose provided as a potted rose
Ordered a potted Charles Darwin rose as a present for my wife's birthday. I'd ordered one for a friend two weeks earlier and it arrived bushy with new growth and buds. The one delivered for my wife's birthday was very clearly a bare root rose put into a pot (no leaves, no new growth and no buds). I wrote to Customer Services to express my disappointment (not having had issues with David Austin before) but was fobbed off with a statement that plants may not have leaves when dispatched. The response was dismissive, unprofessional and completely lacking in any empathy. Reluctantly I won't be ordering from David Austin in the future because of the complete disregard to customers (leave alone the quality of the product provided).

I’m genuinely sorry to hear how disappointed you have been, particularly as the rose was purchased as a birthday gift for your wife. I also appreciate how the difference between the two roses you received may have caused concern.
I can see that you have already been in contact with our Customer Services team and I’m sorry that our previous response left you feeling dismissed. That certainly isn’t how I would want you to feel following an interaction with us, and I completely understand why you expected a little more explanation and reassurance.
I would, however, like to reassure you that the ‘Charles Darwin’ you received was not a bare-root rose placed into a pot. Our potted roses are more established plants with developed root systems. At this time of year, we begin pruning our roses back in preparation for the dormant season, so they can arrive with little or no foliage, new growth or buds. We do highlight this seasonal change on our website, as the appearance of our potted roses naturally varies throughout the year.
I appreciate that the rose you ordered for your friend only a couple of weeks earlier looked very different. Roses do not all progress through their seasonal cycle at exactly the same rate, and I can understand why comparing the two led you to feel disappointed with the rose selected for your wife’s birthday.
While I’m confident that the condition of the rose is normal for this time of year, I am sorry that we did not explain this more thoughtfully when you first contacted us. I would never want a customer to feel that their concerns had simply been disregarded, particularly when choosing one of our roses for such a special occasion.
I do hope that, once planted and given the opportunity to establish, your wife’s ‘Charles Darwin’ will reward you both with beautiful fresh growth and blooms next season.

Great selection of amazing roses but…
Great selection of amazing roses but what is also great is how they treat their customers. Receive regular emails about all aspects of roses which is so helpful. Service is great roses are amazing and packaging lovely aswell

Incorrect item received
I ordered fungus clear concentrate. I received seaweed concentrate so reported this and they said they would send the correct item. The same happened Seaweed concentrate arrived I reported this and they said they would despatch fungus clear. For a third time I have now received Seaweed concentrate again. What incompetence!

Hugely disappointed
My rose that i’ve paid £35 for which was meant to be a generous gardener climbing rose Shrub arrived hacked down today on a lovely warm mild day 22/09/26
I opened the box & felt so disheartened so haven’t even planted the rose.
Would be happy to provide a picture but i can’t see where i can add one.
I’ve contacted DA & not being offered a partial refund

I’m sorry to hear how disappointed you felt when you opened your rose, and I completely appreciate that its appearance was not what you were expecting.
I can see that you have been in correspondence with us regarding this and, before responding to your review, I personally reviewed the photographs you provided. Having looked at them carefully, I can reassure you that the rose you have received is a healthy, well-established first-year plant and is ready to be planted.
At this time of year, we prune our roses back in preparation for the dormant season. This allows the plant to conserve its energy, focus on establishing its root system once planted and prepare for fresh growth in the spring. We do highlight on our website that roses despatched at this time of year will have been pruned back for the dormant season, although I appreciate that the appearance of the plant on arrival can still come as a surprise if you were expecting more foliage and growth.
Having personally reviewed your photographs, I am confident that the rose you have received is healthy and exactly as I would expect for this time of year. For this reason, we're unable to offer a partial refund.
I do, however, want you to be happy with your purchase. As my colleague Alex has previously advised, if you do not wish to keep the rose, you are very welcome to return it to us for a full refund.
I hope I have been able to provide some reassurance as to the health and condition of your rose and explain why it has arrived pruned. Should you decide to keep and plant it, I sincerely hope you enjoy watching it establish and produce beautiful fresh growth next season.

I purchased a potted rose ..Golden Celebration.. for my sister and her husband's golden wedding. They recieved it last week and are excited to watch it grow.
Looking forward to the scent too.
I have bought scented roses from you in the past....still blooming beautifully and the scents are wonderful! One is Jude the Obscure and another Strawberry Hill. Wonderful roses fir growth and scent....highly recommended.

Roses arrived promptly in excellent condition
Ordered two roses via the David Austin website. They arrived promptly, were well packaged and in very good condition. I was delighted to find that the roses arrived in full bloom; I wasn't expecting that in September. This is my fourth time ordering from David Austin and each time my experience has been a good one.
