Ti viene sottoiscritto un abbonamento premium senza che tu lo richieda. In seguito ti viene rinnovato senza mai che tu riceva preventivamente una notifica. Io non mi sono accorto della prima transazione da 157€. In seguito c’è stata un’altra transazione da 242€ senza che ricevessi alcun messaggio, alcuna mail, alcuna notifica. Ho aperto una pratica e chiesto un rimborso.

I saw a payment for £220+ on my PayPal account credited to academia.edu which was a mystery. I had no idea what is was for and I still don’t. I think they may have other activities not connected with research, which they say on their website is what they are for, a research tool. In 2024 I bought something from an advertisement costing £1. Yes, weird I’ll own that. Following through the payment process I realised that this was the free trial and that it would result in a subscription, which I immediately cancelled. More than 2 years later I find I’ve been charged periodically for amounts totalling more than £400. I found this thanks to the excellent and diligent team at PayPal who cancelled the subscription and got me a complete refund. My original cancellation had been obscured by the deliberate obfuscation on the academia website. If you ever come across a purchase that requires a £1 first payment to validate your payment method, close it down and report. Thank you PayPal.

Ich habe mich schon dreimal von allen Mails abgemeldet und erhalte weiterhin fast täglich Spam. Ich habe selbst die Mails bei Gmail als Spam markiert, der Spam-Filter ist ziemlich gut und trotzdem landen emails von denen in meinem Posteingang. Ich sehe keine andere Möglichkeit, als die Firma nun förmlich abzumahnen und mich beim Landesdatenschutzbeautragten zu beschweren.

I simply wanted to download a document that was offered to me for CHF 1.00. Since I didn't have an account, I selected "Login with Google" from the available login options. I was then offered payment via PayPal, which I accepted.

After paying CHF 1.00 (and successfully downloading the document), I received an email informing me that I had subscribed to a "Premium Subscription" for CHF 179.00 per year!

The entire process was completely opaque, presumably hidden somewhere deep in the fine print. I never saw a clear and explicit question asking if I agreed to an annual subscription!

Predatory business model. Like many others my partner was caught in the $180 subscription. There platform made it so she thought she had unsubscribed, yet apparently the process wasn't yet complete. When she emailed them immediately after, they told her there was nothing they could do and thanked her for her contribution. Evil company, unhelpful customer service.

If I could give a zero, I would. I signed up for a 30-day trial subscription and canceled it well before the 30 days were up. They still charged my card $159 anyway. When I emailed them the day of the charge to say that I did not want a subscription, and that I had already canceled, they simply told me that they just weren't going to refund me at all. Even if I had wanted to keep the subscription, it simply isn't worth it. The site is difficult to navigate, and doesn't provide anything that Google Scholar or some other platforms do at a significant fraction of the cost. It is essentially a grift, and the fact that multiple people seem to have the same problems with customer service and refunds, that should tell you all you need to know.

I recently signed up for a one-month trial subscription on Academia.edu to check citations made to my name. Right after the trial period ended, they automatically charged my card a massive annual fee of 3,000 TRY. This deduction was made entirely without my explicit, affirmative consent, and without sending any prior warning or notification email.

​When I immediately contacted their customer support to cancel the unwanted annual subscription and demand a refund, they sent a generic refusal email claiming renewals are non-refundable. Since then, they have been completely ignoring my follow-up emails (Ticket ID: #1005697).

​This is a highly unethical, illegal, and predatory subscription trap designed to take users' money without authorization. I demand that Academia.edu escalates this matter and issues my full refund immediately. Beware of this platform!

Despite cancelling my subscription, academia.edu ignored my email and I was charged 118€. It's easy to sign up but very difficult to cancel. Marketing is aggressive.

Academia edu claim their unsubscription option is easy to use - but this statement is not quite correct. It's easy to sign up but more difficult to unsubscribe, and emails are routinely ignored.

Obwohl ich mein Abonnement gekündigt habe, hat academia.edu meine E-Mail ignoriert und mir wurden 118 € berechnet. Die Anmeldung ist einfach, die Kündigung hingegen sehr schwierig. Das Marketing ist aggressiv.

Back in 2023, I bought one article for my thesis because I didn't want a subscription.

As it turned out, over the course of three years, Academia deducted a total of over 700 euros from my account because I apparently did have a subscription. They send you so many e-mails, but the ones about payment and subscription renewal are the ones you have to opt-in for instead of opt-out.

Make sure you never give this company your creditcard info.

If you fell victim to their predatory subscription practices, it's very difficult to get an hold of them, since they use multiple different mail-addresses for 'customer' support and reply with bot-messages.

I managed to get all my money back from the last three years, after messaging their CEO directly on LinkedIn.

They know exactly what they're doing, and they're not planning on changing anything.

This company is a scam. They do not let you cancel your premium renewal then they process the renewal and refuse to refund you. It does not have enough access for the price it is and notifies you about mentions constantly about unrelated people.

AcademiaEdu è una piattaforma alla quale non sono mai stata registrata, non ho mai caricato lì pubblicazioni mie. Oggi ho visto con grande stupore lì una mia pubblicazione caricata da me a ResearchGate molti anni fa :
"Written sources on Coptic Dying methods"

Era posta sull account di una persona omonima, ma di interessi del tutto diversi dal tema.
Ho chiesto all'amministrazione di Academia di rimuovere immediatamente il mio articolo pubblicato lì senza permesso, però fecero finta di non aver capito: Mi sarei forse registrata con e-mail diversa, per questo avrei difficoltà di entrare nel mio account...
A questo punto sorge spontaneo chiedersi fino a che punto gli articoli lì pubblicati non costituiscano un plagio e se siano effettivamente scritti dai titolari degli account.

I have been billed for premium membership for the next year without requesting this.
Last September I was diagnosed with breast cancer and have been off work from my University in Australia where I am a tenured academic.
When I saw that money had been taken from
my account by Academia without my authorization I send Academia an email.
‘Hannah’ asked me to provide specific details about my account so that they could look it up.
I did that.
I’ve now received an email basically saying that it’s too late etc.
I take issue with this.
My question to ACADEMIA is ‘ If an academia should die or disengage from work due to serious illness or any other compelling reason how can they in any conscience take money from a bank account?’ Unauthorized.

This is deplorable business practice.

If they do not refund my money in 48 hours I’ll be taking this further.

Me siento engañada, estafada y robada. Me han hecho un cargo de 139€ sin previo aviso por una suscripción que no deseo. Ahora veremos si me devuelven o no el dinero, aunque tiene pinta de que no.

Mi experiencia con Academia.edu ha sido muy negativa.

He recibido un cargo por una renovación de Academia Premium de la que no era plenamente consciente. Al contactar con atención al cliente para solicitar el reembolso, me han indicado que no pueden devolver el importe porque se trata de una renovación de suscripción. He reclamado el día después del cobro y me contestan que no me lo reembolsan.!!

Aunque han cancelado la renovación automática para que no se me vuelva a cobrar, considero que el proceso de aviso, renovación y cobro no ha sido suficientemente claro para el usuario. En mi caso, no tenía intención de renovar ni de contratar un nuevo periodo de pago.

Me parece especialmente decepcionante que, ante una solicitud de reembolso realizada tras detectar el cargo, la respuesta haya sido simplemente aplicar una política interna de “no refunds” para renovaciones, sin valorar realmente la situación del cliente.

No recomiendo activar Academia Premium sin revisar muy bien las condiciones, los avisos de renovación y la configuración de la suscripción. En mi opinión, deberían mejorar mucho la transparencia del proceso de renovación y ofrecer una solución más razonable en estos casos.

I fell victim to the $1 scam. I signed up for a one-month trial with annual renewal, but before the end of the 30-day trial, I canceled my subscription. My account even reverted to free mode, but to my surprise, on the 13th, a month later, I was charged $99. I contacted them, and they told me they couldn't give me a refund. I saw on their website that they use this $1 scam to get our bank details.

They have to know that they Steel real money of real people.
