This company just hands you the course material and throw you to the wolves. They do not offer support or tutoring and take forever to respond/communicate. I have requested cancellation multiple times and they refuse to cancel this course. The course material is VERY lengthy and complicated. It is not structured at all. I would never recommend this instruction. Unbelievable.

This company just wants your money and does not prepare their students properly for their own exams, Please don't use this website if you're interested in the medical coding and billing world. I recommend preppy, but it is mostly from word of mouth from a great coder on YouTube that I discovered after I wasted my time and money here. They require so many hidden fees and make every learning experience feel like pulling teeth. Look on any forum, no one likes this company after dealing with it.

Not as easy to get a good-paying job as advertised. I spent money on yearly dues, test/certification fees, and books for 3 years before giving up on this career path.

AAPC has been extremely difficult to work with. Their communication is horrible, and the program was misleadingly advertised as beginner-friendly and easy to complete without an instructor. However, the exams were completely different from the material taught, and there was no real support.
Whenever I asked for help, they told me to buy another instructor bundle or watch YouTube videos. After paying so much money, this is unacceptable and unprofessional. The entire experience felt like a scam, and I am requesting a full refund.

Wall of text follows.
Background: CPC & CCC certified with over 8 years experience as a provider coding educator, auditor, coder, and risk adjuster working in office, remote. I've worked as a full time employee, consultant, and freelance with my own small business. I've worked for a total of 10 different companies of various sizes and focuses. Disclaimer finished.
AAPC is the premier credentialing agency for professional fee (aka pro-fee coding). AHIMA is the agency for facility fee coding. Difference is essentially AAPC accounts for the doctor's bill and AHIMA covers down on the hospital's bill. And yes, this is a big over-simplification.
AAPC originally was focused on credentialing, education, and training (and still is). However, over the past four years especially I've noticed it's attention has expanded to foreign markets, advertising the "conferences", and the prices have increased both for membership, tests, training materials, etc. So, there's good and bad, and ultimately from my perspective AAPC is now a general healthcare company; with the credentialing & education in the background. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.
For those considering doing a "coding course" or "college"...you're wasting your time and money. Use the AAPC online course that they provide, it's cheaper and always on-sale (and yes that's a shady sales tactic, but that's essentially any online seller). Granted, you'll finish with the test with a CPC-A, not a CPC. The difference? The "apprentice" element is nonsense and I cannot stand that this was created, but be warned: you need to get the add-ons like the Practicode, xtern, blah blah whatever it's called so your "time" for the apprenticeship is met; aka your CPC-A will be upgraded to a full CPC. Is it more money, yes; but you will thank yourself later. Now why is that a problem? It's gatekeeping. (Yes, this is indeed a 'trust me bro' moment) -> I've sat on dozens on hiring panels and made decisions, you know how many CPC-As we've hired? 0. I'm just being honest, and again there's no need for the CPC-A element to even exist. Quite literally, your apprentice position comes with your first job you'll have as a CPC. Now, could a CPC-A perhaps be hired as a biller or maybe working denials/claim edits? Maybe. But a traditional track Coder I position? Highly, highly unlikely. Therefore, buy the add-on programs and save yourself the hassle to have maximum doors open.
Should I get the CPC/CPB? No. I am unaware of any organization that cares about the certified biller. If you want to be hired with that, got a year or more experience with the EHR (e.g., Epic or Cerner), now we're talking.
There have been some mild improvements, from 150 to 100 questions on the exam and quicker feedback. So, I'll give credit to the AAPC. Of course your time is reduced now, but still, take the win where you can.
The specialty exams, yes they suck and they're hard, but that's not going to change. For me as historical cardio coder: want to be prepared? Dr. Z e-learning courses are THE way to prepare for CCC, CCVTC, or CIRCC (which he created). Other specialties, honestly time in work is what prepares you. Otherwise, the AAPC's prep courses for them...kinda meh.
Other credentials I recommend? CEMC; E/Ms are universal. CRC; risk adjusting coding is a strong path. CPMA; incredibly useful. CPCO; strong yes, but that needs to be coupled with years of experience, possibly an MBA, and especially the 'right connections' at work. CEDO/CEDI; can be strong & useful but that's conditional if becoming an auditor is your long term goal. All the surgical specialties (like myself with CCC) are great if you want to demonstrate mastery with that area; however you can be pigeon-holed. COC; another decent baseline. I'll address CIC in a separate paragraph.
Certifications that are well...I guess if you enjoy taking tests then go for it! CPMS; if you're a scribe then I suggest you focus on maybe being a medical assistant, etc. this isn't going to be of any substantial help. RCMS/CPPM/CVBA; okay all of these are trying "credentialize" a job title. If you're going to be a practice manager, it's because you have years of experience, know the right people, and in the role be selected. The other two are related, but again are relevant for other jobs. And AAPC's newest...CPC-M. Now that made me laugh. Literally, zero relevance. If you're a "master coder" then you'll show it when you have over a decade of experience and people call you, email, or text you personally to get your advice. The CPC-M is like the back version of the CPC-A.
Finally, the CIC? Honestly, get the CCS from AHIMA. Just bite the bullet and take the plunge.
So in the end, AAPC is neither good or bad. Just unnecessarily expensive now in my opinion. And I'm out of characters! lol

The Number One Reason why I am giving two stars is because apparently AAPC can hold certifications Hostage unless you have a paid membership and if you let the member expire the will take away your certification and not validate them regardless that you paid to have this as part of your CV/Resume. Apparently this is ALL Legal too. That is bad business and is all about the Money and not the student!!!

I did research on the testing portion first. I emailed and called asking questions regarding using notes as I have extreme testing anxiety. I was told by both that notes were acceptable. I signed up for 3 courses. Medical terminology was fine. Medical billing was another story. The lessons go quick and the coding portion lacks a ton of information. I was getting ready to take the test and then found out the requirements. I ended up not testing as I didn’t have the room they required or a non computer web cam. You’d think you were learning state secrets! No close testing site and you can’t use anything. This isn’t real life, in reality you can use as many notes as possible
I would not recommend using this, if I choose to do it again I would go with a different program as this was a waste of my time and money
If you have issues emailing the proctor is the only way and then you wait until they feel like getting back to you with non answers

I finish my CPC class on 07/21. They scheduled me for 2 different classes to start on 07/21 one was LVT and the other was for the job ready program. I called them to see what can be done because I can’t start new classes the same time and day while I’m still finishing my last class for the CPC. The First Lady I spoke to helped and canceled the LVT class told me to reach out once I’m ready great! After I realized they scheduled an additional class for the same day I reached out the next day and this lady said she had to reach out and she would get back to that it shouldn’t be a problem. Later that day she reached out only to tell me they will not cancel it. That I can’t take it at my own paste with my starting date 07/21( again still in my Cpc class). I paid a little over $5,000 way too much for this type of stuff to be happening. Regardless if I can take it at my own paste or not that day shouldn’t have started until the CPC class was completely OVER! I was told they usually don’t schedule those classes until a couple of weeks after you finish the CPC class and they didn’t. Very disappointing I don’t recommend going here.

I have been a loyal AAPC member for more than 10 years, but my recent experience as a volunteer officer has completely broken my trust in this organization. I stepped up to serve our community as the Member Development Officer for my local chapter (Mobile, AL), investing my personal time, skills, and energy to support the membership base. I fulfilled all of my officer duties perfectly.
Unfortunately, our local chapter was shut down, and a final bank statement was submitted late during the dissolution process, AAPC has completely denied my earned volunteer rewards.
I had absolutely no control over the financial reporting or the closure logistics. Penalizing individual volunteers who met every requirement because of a separate administrative delay is a terrible, corporate way to treat a loyal membership base. Internal appeals to Chapter Support were met with rigid, unhelpful denials.
If you are considering volunteering your time as an AAPC chapter officer, be warned: they will gladly take your free labor, but they will not hesitate to penalize you for administrative issues outside your control.

I've been an AAPC member for many years, and it has played a significant role in my professional growth. The member benefits, including endless (many of them free) educational resources, certification support, and continuing education opportunities, are well worth the investment. The connections I've made through my Local Chapter and National events have opened doors and helped me advance my career beyond what I had ever imagined possible! The whole community is incredibly supportive and welcoming. I really appreciate the willingness of members to share their expertise and support one another.
AAPC has truly been everything I didn’t realize I was missing in my life—corny, but absolutely true!
As an RN with over 30 years of experience, I began a new chapter five years ago when I entered the world of CDI. That transition changed everything. Joining AAPC opened the door to a community rooted in education, support, empowerment, and meaningful, lifelong connections.
I currently serve as Chapter President of my local chapter and have witnessed firsthand the positive impact AAPC has on its members. It is an organization that genuinely cares about supporting individual growth and success. I’ve been fortunate to serve on the Chapter Advisory Board, present at HealthCon, and graduate from the Emerging Leaders Program, experiences that have strengthened me both professionally and personally.
Thanks to the incredible support system within AAPC, I’ve grown into a more confident and empowered speaker and leader. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities AAPC has provided over the years and look forward to what the future holds.
As someone deeply involved in the industry, I’ve been consistently impressed by how authentic and member-focused AAPC is. Serving on the National Advisory Board has been one of the greatest privileges of my career, and the existence of the Board makes it clear they truly care about the member experience and continuous improvement—they actively listen and translate input into meaningful action. The professional community AAPC fosters is unparalleled, creating valuable opportunities to connect, learn, and grow.
Their HEALTHCON conference is one of the most well-executed and economical events I attend - and I attend many. It consistently delivers high-quality content, strong operational excellence, and real value for the investment, making it a must-attend each year. Overall, AAPC sets a high bar for both professional development and member engagement.
Had a wonderful time at HEALTHCON, their national conference. The event was well organized. Food was good. The after hours events were a lot of fun.
Spent a ton of money so far. I don't find them very polite as well as you have to be on top of them because you may have the right answers but receive no credit for you. I took the CPC exam quite a few times and they also didn't care that I had multiple questions on the $425 test that were old and none of the answers were even in the current code books. Might be switching to AHIMA instead.

I have studied for the CPC exam for years, including training at an accredited private University and a medical coding internship where my managers are extremely satisfied with my work. The grading on the CPC exam is rigged for sure. There is no way that I failed twice.

“I’m extremely frustrated. After paying $7,500 to earn my CPB certification, I’ve now learned that I must continue paying annual membership fees and additional costs for CEUs just to keep my certification active. This feels misleading and disappointing.

Absolutely terrible. Customer service will treat you like shit. If you have to return anything goodluck. Because even if you call they can tell you to send it back to the address on the box. It can then be a 3rd party shipping company and they will not know the building number. So now your out $40+ on excess shipping. While hoping I can get it to the correct place.
Update:
They gave me a paid shipping label to return the books I am very pleased with how they handled it. While this was a stressful experience I do feel they fixed it the best they could.

I studied through Legacy Education, great program, when it was time to take my exam at my home, I did all of the pre-checks, was ready to start. When I closed the chat box the program kicked me back to the very beginning. I messaged my proctor. When the question about my school came up, I answered it, told the proctor I think I got it. He took over my mouse/computer, he tried over and over again to get it started. Finally he connected me to a technician, who tried foe maybe 30 seconds then told me to contact my instructor, I asked who, my proctor? I waited, it finally said they were waiting for a technician, I waited some more. Finally someone else came on and tried a couple of times, she said my test had been launched but I saw nothing, she eventually told me to reschedule and that I would not lose thus voucher. I tried to reschedule, it said I didn't have any exams in my account, so I couldn't.
When I went back to my room, I was upset, may have said some choice words, well, they were still recording, why? The test was over! I spent 1 1/2 hours waiting.
So they said it was my fault and that I have to pay more money for the voucher I lost.

I don't recommend AAPC to anyone who desire to come into medical coding, they manipulate the test results with AI in reason you continuing pay them and get more and more courses. I'm a teacher and I can say AAPC management is anti-pedagogical and dishonest with the student.
