They are terrible organisation hardly…

They are terrible organisation hardly any staff and the one's they do have they treat terrible no wonder nobody stay's working for them. Most of the students sort their own stuff out.

Bed bugs / poor customer service

My flat has recently had an issue with bed bugs (which took 3 months to sort). The service we received at this time was poor. People were forced to sleep in their infested rooms as there were no spare rooms available to give them (which was apparently untrue). Once it was finally dealt with, we were promised that we’d receive all of the expenses we’d had due to the infestation refunded to us. I made my claim and gave the staff a detailed description of what money I needed back and why. I was then only offered a refund of part of what I asked for and was told it was because they were only covering certain costs, not all of them. I pointed out that my other flatmates had actually received more than they asked for so this couldn’t have been true. I was also told by them that they wouldn’t cover the costs I spent on a train home when we had to be out of the flat for treatment to take place as I was apparently offered a room to stay in (I was not!). However, my email was ignored as well as my follow-up email. I’m extremely unhappy that after the poor customer service and support we received during this time, I can’t even get my money back which should be the bare minimum.

Chalmers Street Edinburgh, more issues...

1. Chalmers Street Edinburgh now reached 15 power outages.

2. They perform kitchen inspections and then send out a generic email, rather than tackling the individual causing the issue. They should employ cleaners every month. The reason they don't tackle the issue is they have a lot of spare rooms and don't want to upset people who will return next year.

The whole student accommodation business is just about fleecing people.

Only Care About Money, Not Students

Extremely rude and not solution oriented
they only focus on how to take more money from students. I explained my situation as politely and respectfully as possible, showing how serious my circumstances are, but they ignored everything except money. Even the constructive solutions I suggested were completely disregarded. They only care about the money coming in.

They always come back with only one “solution” that benefits them financially. They are purely money focused not students and their mental wellbeing!

The process for moving in, paying rent, and ending contracts is completely unclear and stressful. Even verbal agreements made with staff were ignored, and they showed no consideration for urgent financial situations.

Their problem-solving and communication with students is completely inadequate.

In short, this company does not take students seriously. Be very careful if you are thinking of using them.

Dissatisfaction with my experience in the US accommodation

Overall, this has been a disappointing experience, and I would not choose to stay here again under these circumstances.

I’m writing to express my dissatisfaction with my experience in the accommodation so far.

Throughout my entire stay, I have not been provided with a room key card, which has left me dependent on staff assistance every time I need to enter. This has been inconvenient, restrictive, and has made me feel uncomfortable having to constantly request access and undergo repeated checks.

Additionally, the heater in my room is not functioning properly, and the equipment frequently turns off, making the living conditions far from ideal.

My experience is very bad... They don't care about the student at all...Give me back my 1000 pounds and cancel the fake agreement.
Every time I get mail from you..You people deliberately don't want to understand...Your target and commission may be important to you..But we have no value to you...I have complained many times...made requests but you people don't understand...I will pay the money as per the agreement and give you the student...It is not my responsibility to give the student..

It is amber student and your own responsibility.I don't have to give any money...I have to take it from you...You come amber student give me back my 1000 pounds..and cancel the fake agreement. Because both of you are responsible for my loss..Your first priority should be the students..not your false promises..

You cheat by working first and speaking after being caught..so that the student has no proof that he is telling the truth..I request you not to do the same bad thing to any other student as you have done to me...and I have already answered the mail you sent to the unit student..how many times do I have to answer the same thing over and over again.

Appalling Conditions at Elvet Studios, Durham

I live at Elvet Studios in Durham, & while I was initially impressed by the building & the staff, I've quickly found that the looks were deceiving. There are only 2 washing machines & dryers for 100+ students, & both dryers were out of order for an entire month. The staff were entirely uninformed & clearly didn't care. I would never live with Unite again.
UPDATE: the conditions within studios are also unacceptable for the high price being charged. The maintenance staff are unhelpful & patronising, & clearly don't care about tenant wellbeing. They dismissed the massive patches of mould & their visible effects on my health as something insignificant that happens all the time. I highly regret signing with Unite.

I was threatened at knife-point by a flatmate and Unite did nothing!

I was threatened at knife-point by a flatmate while living at Unite Students’ Aston University campus. I reported it immediately. Unite’s response was pathetic, they let the same person stay in the building and treated it like an admin issue rather than a serious safety threat. No safeguarding, no urgency, just excuses.
One of their on-site security guards, Hassan, was vile. Instead of offering protection, he was dismissive and made the entire situation more distressing. The people who are supposed to make students feel safe are the same ones who make you feel trapped and ignored.
Management hides behind scripted replies and fake concern. When I posted about it publicly, they responded with a copy-paste apology and even spelled my name wrong. That’s how little attention they pay to the people they fail.
Unite Students’ Aston University campus is unsafe, unprofessional, and morally rotten. Please do not live here.

4 students sick and unsafe, no communication

It has been a terrible experience and their lack of organization and care has left 4 new uni students sick and unsafe:

A month-and-a-half in to this 2025-2026 school year my daughter and her flat mates at Romano court have a barely working front door with a giant hole in the door (where staff attempted to “fix” the lock and instead left them with a large hole where passers-by can literally see into their flat). It’s been covered with black duct tape ever since (provided by a parent not even the staff!)

Her first international roommate checked in earliest to find their bathroom ceiling full of mold, the smell and toxins making her sick.

The mattresses were dirty and clearly uncleaned and one of them had old vomit still stuck to it.

The safety and anti-theft window latch was broken in one of the rooms.

For the first few weeks they could not find the girls’ door or room keys (their front office and key system is frighteningly unorganized!) and so we had to wait for a staff member to let her in EACH time she came home (waiting sometimes 15+ minutes to find a staff person).

And probably worst of all, as a parent of my international student who just wants my kid to be safe and healthy, I have been trying to get a hold of someone to address this problem. I’ve emailed the “general manager” multiple times, called the phone numbers provided, left messages for someone to call me back - and NO ONE has ever called or emailed me back...not even once!

There has been only one helpful staff member who worked tirelessly to actually find my daughter’s room key and did anything useful to attempt to help us, and that is Kenneth A (5-stars for him).

Unite Students has been a terrible experience and their lack of organization and care has left 4 new uni students sick and unsafe.

Disgusting management and tenant terms

My daughter was forced to sign up for oak brook park through Birmingham university as no other accommodation was available as system kept crashing. She has stayed 10 nights and for personal reasons have left the university. We are now told we have to pay the full years fees for ten nights!! £9.300 no compromise and no compassion at all! Absolutely disgusting treatment throughout and various conflicting advice given by the staff and no one in management could even be bothered to contact me.

Do not use this accommodation for your kids

Unacceptable Service, Safety Lapses, and Unprofessional Staff Conduct at Greetham Street

My tenancy at Greetham Street was unfortunately marked by a disappointing failure to address promised compensation, a blatant disregard for student needs, and serious staff misconduct. While the location is convenient, the quality of service, maintenance, and student support is severely lacking.

1. Failure to Resolve Outstanding Compensation and Refunds
Despite multiple follow-ups, the management has failed to resolve two long-standing administrative matters related to renovation work carried out during my stay.

Renovation Voucher: I was promised a compensatory voucher for the significant inconvenience caused by the renovation work. To date, I have not received this voucher, nor have I been given a clear expected date of delivery, demonstrating a failure to honor a commitment.

Refund for Damaged Item: A worker assured me I would be refunded for my personal clothes stand (£20) that was broken during the renovation. The refund has not been processed, and there has been no proactive communication regarding its status.

The consistent lack of communication and failure to deliver on promises for both the voucher and the refund is unprofessional and unacceptable.

2. Inconsistent and Unhelpful Luggage Assistance
My move-in and move-out experiences were made unnecessarily stressful due to the staff's unwillingness to provide basic support:

Move-In Frustration: Arriving with heavy luggage, I asked reception for help, which was immediately refused. I later found out that trolleys are available for student use, as I observed local students utilizing them just weeks later.

Move-Out Conflict: When moving out with numerous boxes, I specifically requested a trolley and was initially told they did not have any. It was only after a lengthy conversation where I had to insist and challenge the staff that they reluctantly produced one. This intentional misleading and lack of transparency about available resources forced me to struggle unnecessarily.

3. Serious Incidents of Unprofessional Staff Conduct (Carl)
My interactions with a specific staff member, Carl, demonstrated a profound lack of empathy, professionalism, and respect for students:

The E-Scooter Incident and Lack of Empathy: I work a difficult part-time job requiring me to commute by e-scooter due to inaccessible public transport (shifts ran from 5:30 am to 10:00 pm). Arriving back near midnight, utterly exhausted after a 16+ hour day, Carl stopped me regarding the e-scooter policy. I immediately agreed to find an alternative storage solution the very next day, asking only for a temporary exception to take it to my room for that single night. He flatly refused and proceeded to force me to wait for over an hour while he cited agreement clauses, completely ignoring the fact that I had repeatedly told him I was extremely tired and physically drained. This was a shocking display of managerial power over basic human consideration.

The "Pen" Incident and Childish Behavior: During a required entry process for my friends, I asked Carl for a pen. In response, he deliberately threw the pen at me, letting it fall inside the reception area. He then demanded I come inside and pick it up, only because I had simply said "pen" and not added "please." This behavior is childish, condescending, and deeply unprofessional for someone in a student support role.

4. Major Maintenance Delays and Fire Safety Concerns
The accommodation management needs to urgently review its approach to both maintenance response times and fundamental safety:

Excessive Maintenance Delay: The chimney in my studio room was creating a constant, disruptive noise. Despite making four to five complaints, it took an unacceptable period of six months to address the issue. The eventual "fix" was simply installing an on/off switch, highlighting the poor priority given to residents' peace and comfort.

Critical Fire Safety Hazard: Most alarmingly, the kitchen area was equipped with curtains hanging directly next to the gas hob. This is a glaring and obvious fire hazard. A momentary lapse, such as a splash of hot oil or high heat, could easily ignite the fabric, posing a serious risk to residents. This represents a fundamental oversight in basic safety standards.

I have had a horrible and stressful…

I have had a horrible and stressful experience with unite students. I emailed 4 months in advance about some rent issues, making my difficult situation very clear to them and I had to follow up myself countless times, with minimal responses with a great lack of communication and information. I was told the issue was solved, just to follow it up myself to find out it was not, which has left me in a distressing situation. they have reached with no help or care.
Adding to this, my flats freezer has been broken for 3 weeks now, each of us having complained. We’ve been told weeks ago that we would get a new one but nothing since, no follow up, nothing.

Oxford & Parade Green Staff

Parade Green in Oxford has been a terrible experience. I was bullied by my flatmates and instead of offering support, the staff were extremely rude and unprofessional. I was wrongly accused of setting off fire alarms without any evidence and unfairly given a Stage Two Warning by Aimar and Hannah, even though I repeatedly explained I had nothing to do with it. After making my anxiety disorder known, Aimar then chose to ignore my emails, which was dismissive and unhelpful. The whole Oxford team has been careless, unsupportive, and left me feeling isolated at a time when I needed understanding and support.

Trafalgar Hall in Portsmouth

Unfortunately I had a lot of issues staying at Trafalgar Hall in Portsmouth, which is owned and operated by Unite Students. Just a few days after moving in, the door handle got stuck in a downward position, meaning that the door wouldn't lock most of the time and could just be pushed open from the outside. A maintenance person came to my flat the next day and literally told me: All the doors in this building have the same issue, there is nothing I can do about that. It seems that he wasn't aware that a door that doesn't lock is kind of a huge safety issue? I had to escalate the issue to their customer service team to get somebody to do something about it. The door in the downstairs hallway that leads to the elevators also doesn't lock most of the time. It's basically an open house! Why is it that they can't just replace the doors if they charge so much rent? There are plenty of other issues: My bathroom was mouldy, the laundry room was not clean (they blame that issue on Circuit and say that they are not responsible for cleaning the laundry room) and some of the staff are unmotivated and at times downright rude. There are some positives, like the double bed and the wooden floor, but at the end of the day you just feel like nobody here cares about providing good-quality accommodation.
