Country Inn...Where
I used to use this hotel when is was Washbourne Court owned by the Von-Essen Group and at the time it was run superbly. The next time I visited for a weekend, it had been taken over, and it was being run by people who didn't have a clue, I vowed never to return, that was about 6
years+ ago. Last week I was in the Cotswold for the week when, I weekend and suggested to my Husband we go for a walk around Lower Slaughter and then get morning Coffee. The day was sunny, bright but very cold, we had a lovely walk and were looking forward to our coffee and snack in front of a roaring log fire, (like the great Von-Essen Days). We walked into the bar area painted in a stark plain cream, I call it builders Magnolia, as there is no thought in it, we were followed to our table by the an abrupt waiter who asked 'can I help you' we explained we just wanted a coffee and a small bite. We sat down, and requested two large Cappuccinos, we don't do Cappuccinos the waiter replied....its 2017 what decent cafe does not do Cappuccinos..ridiculous, he said he could do a latte, this turned out to be a glass of hot milk. No snacks available, no cake, no biscuits, not even a cheese and ham toasted sandwich. The waiter brought over the menu, Fish and Chip £15 etc this we declined, as it happened the table opposite sent there meals back as they were cold, they also requested a ham and cheese toastie! when the waiter said they do not do them, quite rightly she asked 'well why don't you do them'? (I don't think she got an answer). No fires lit, although they did have the facility, and the day was freezing.
All in all a very disappointing experience, it's not rocket science, if your going to portray yourself as an Inn, DO INNY THINGS...log fires, snug interiors, friendly waiters, CHEESE & HAM TOASTIES, add comforting snacks onto the menu, maybe add a few tweed throws across the awful leather sofas (these need new infills in the cushions). I am sure if the owners invest a little thought, very little money and a weekend they could transform the place and would make it back tenfold, customers want an experience when they go out for the day.
I basically think their heart is not really in it, and believe me it shows.
