I decided to write a detailed review of OrtoCanis and its Leg Bootie Splint for anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation.

My dog is a 28.5 kg Golden Retriever who fractured the outermost toe on his right front paw. The fracture has been healing slowly, so I was looking for an orthosis that could protect the paw and nail while walking and immobilize the affected toe.

I did extensive research into dog orthoses available in the EU, particularly in the Nordic countries, as well as Russia and Ukraine. OrtoCanis seemed to offer one of the most suitable EU options, so I chose them.

SPOILER: If I had had another EU-based option, even at a higher price, I would NOT have chosen OrtoCanis.

I had read many reviews complaining about two things: poor customer service and a confusing sizing system. Unfortunately, I can confirm both.

The customer service representative could not help me determine the correct size of their own product and instead immediately pointed out that the company would not be responsible if I ordered the wrong size. In the middle of our email conversation, they simply stopped replying. I am still waiting for an answer. (Yes, Xavier C., I mean you.)

For a company selling specialized products in a niche market, this level of customer service is unacceptable.

My dog's measurements were:

A — tip of longest toe to carpal pad: 15 cm
B — tip of longest toe to mid-forearm: 27–28 cm
Paw width: 6.7 cm

According to the sizing guide, size should primarily be selected based on the first measurement, which would indicate size S. However, S would clearly be too narrow for my dog's paw. Based on width, L was the first size that appeared suitable.

So I ordered L.

It was still too small.

The upper part of the splint was so narrow that my dog's leg simply could not fit inside.

This is particularly frustrating because size L exceeded my dog's measurements in both relevant dimensions. It could logically have been too large, but it should not have been too small. Yet it was completely unusable without modification.

To be fair, the splint itself appears to be made from reasonably high-quality and sturdy materials. Unfortunately, good materials are of little use if the product does not fit.

How I made the splint usable:

The splint is made of polypropylene, which can be softened and reshaped with heat.

I first made a cast of my dog's right leg and paw. I then used a heat gun at approximately 300–350°C, heating the upper part of the splint from both sides for around 5–10 minutes, with the heat gun approximately 5–15 cm away.

Once softened, I inserted the leg cast into the splint, secured it with the original straps and left it to cool for about 30 minutes.

The first attempt worked: the splint expanded enough to fit my dog's leg.

However, I then noticed that the upper section restricted the dog's flexion joint. Since I only needed to immobilize the toe and did not need to immobilize the entire joint, I secured the splint in a vice and removed part of the upper section between the second and third attachment points using a Dremel.

After this modification, the splint no longer restricts paw flexion and can be used in a way that is much closer to how the product is advertised.

Bottom line: The product itself has good potential and the materials seem solid, but the confusing sizing system and poor customer support turned what should have been a simple purchase into a DIY modification project.
