Well done NHS Blood Donation

The NHS blood donor app and whole process is vastly improved. Easy to book and appointment, easy to attend and the whole process is easily under and hour now. Could do with slightly more appointments available in the evenings for those of us that work but otherwise it is great. The staff are always very attentive and polite and a shout out to Tatiana from Brighton who was super fast getting me through in my lunch hour today in Horsham.

I am writing to express my deep…

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the consistently unprofessional behavior I have encountered from a staff member named Mori at the NHSBT Tooting site. Whenever we submit samples for cross-matching that we are unable to process in-house, I am met with an aggressive and rude attitude that is frankly unacceptable. Instead of providing the professional support we require, she repeatedly interrogates us as to why we are sending the samples at all, suggesting we should be handling them ourselves. It is important to remind the team that we are utilizing a paid service, and as a customer, I expect to be treated with courtesy and efficiency rather than hostility. This ongoing friction is a barrier to our workflow, and I believe that if an individual is unwilling to provide professional service to clinical partners, they should not be in that role. I expect our future submissions to be handled with the professional standard that NHSBT claims to uphold

NHS Blood Service

Took a day off work, I'm self-employed so it actually cost me real ££ to do this, to donate plasma for the NHS. After a substantial drive to get to the plasma donation centre - they don't seem to care enough to have a lot of them around the country - and an hour filling in a paper based questionnaire (even though I'd done the online questionnaire AND called the helpline to be sure) then an interview with a trainee and her mentor - All Good - yeah! Then we get to the finger blood test for iron / haemoglobin content and the result comes back 3 points below the lower limit, so I'm told I can't donate today, come back in 3 months! I show the staff results from my full annual blood test taken just 1 week ago which shows I'm 20 points above the cut-off value, they agree that a lab test result from a venous blood sample will be more accurate than their thumb lancet and portable device result, but No they can't rest re-try the test with another device as, 'that would undermine my colleague' !! Nurse who pops in to give a second opinion confirms this, and even a call to Head Office elicits no common sense! This is plasma donation remember, so zero clinical risk in this situation that a low haemoglobin will harm me, as guess what, they don't actually take any of my red blood cells permanently, they just borrow 'em for a few minutes! So the NHS Blood Service is happy to waste half a day of my time and money, and even worse, a valuable appointment slot because of an arbitrary cut-off value and 'not wanting to undermine a colleague'. So there you have it, if you want to donate blood or plasma, remember that despite the ads and the rhetoric, at the end of the day you're just an item to them, an asset, one of millions. They don't care whether you donate or not and they certainly don't really care about you trying to do something for the common good. They care about arbitrary rules, and colleague feelings, over common sense. Suffice to say I won't bother to try and donate again, clearly they don't need me...or you, if you don't fit their exact but arbitrary criteria.

Lack of care

Have tried many times to get back on the register to give blood again and nobody wants to help. They’re screaming out for O negative and nobody is interested. Had high iron count for a couple of weeks since December. They don’t trust my word after telling them it’s normal or even giving them my normal iron count! Very disappointed and saddened that I can’t help people in need.

Blood Donation

Kept waiting well after my appointment time. Appointments are a nightmare to book. Rarely anybavailable. Always had a positive experience until yesterday. Arm was bruised as needlecwent in so donation stopped. Complained. Woman who rang and spoke to me inferred I was lying and couldn't have cared less about the fact I said thatcI had no intention of donating again. I have made 63 donations and to be treated like I was is an absolute disgrace. This is purely voluntary. Pity people who work for NHSBT don't recognise this. Not a great percentage of the population give blood. You would think NHSBT would do their best to keep those that do donate.

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR PHONE…

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR PHONE NUMBER!

As much as this pains me (I have family members who are only alive as a result of the NHS blood & transplant service) I cannot explain how painful dealing with these individuals is.

Story time - I have been a regular blood donor for over 4 years now,

I attended a session that had been booked as I normally would, explained to the individuals that I had a bad back at the time and was undergoing physio, and there was a small chance I would require surgery.

After speaking to the head nurse on the day, they advised that they would not take my blood as I may be required to have surgery, I explained, that due to circumstances, surgery wasn't going to be until at least 6months post the donation date and even at that, it was a very slim chance, I merely mentioned it conversationally to the initial nurse. They still refused to take my blood. Understandable I thought, you know, they have to protect me and themselves. I left disgruntled i had travelled miles, but left knowing they had done what they believed was in my best interest.

Cut to two weeks later, I'm getting bombared by the 0300 number to donate blood. (I am O- so understand i'm in a bit more demand than others). Finally was able to answer a call outside of work, and explained my situation. I wasn't willing to waste my time attending an appt until my back issue was sorted as I had been turned away last time.

Individual on the phone was great, understood my predicament and asked if i knew when surgery was so they could hold my account and wouldn't pester me, i explained i still wasn't sure if i even needed it, and asked them to put it on 'hold' indefinitely, and I would make contact when my other health issues were sorted.

A week later, another call, and another explanation - they offer to 'hold' my account again.. great.. i thought.

I have constantly been bombarded with phone calls, often numerous a day within the same hour, for the past 6 months, multiple voicemails in a day when i am unable to pick up, I am fed up of explaining my situation to people who promise to sort it out but do nothing.

I understand the hard work and dedication within this team, but please sort your call centres out, you are alienating those of us who actually care and want to donate. I understand donations are in short supply and are greatly needed, but LISTEN to those of us who do, willingly attend donation sessions, giving up free time to do so, and when we tell you our situation, HEAR US and act upon your promises.

It pains me greatly that I do not feel able to reccomend people to give blood due to the experience I have had.

Side Note - every individual i have dealt with face to face through either NHS Blood or Transplant services have been impecabble, the blood donations are seamless and the nurses / staff in attendance are always fantastic.

Everybody should donate where possible, JUST DONT GIVE THEM YOUR PHONE NUMBER.

Zero appointments available

Zero appointments available . So I need to book a day off work & travel hours to Milton Keynes ,all this is hard to do .I donate as a medical problem I have and need to lower my red blood cells . I really hate dealing with these people and depending on them to help me . They call me looking my help.I can’t get to MK as it costs a lot of money.

I will now look into trying to do pay a nurse of duty to help drain me

After attending last week

After attending last week, Sohail called me today to remind me to rebook. I usually rebook instantly but having had an issue donating (damn veins!) I was less keen to do so.

Sohail was professional, courteous and polite and got my next appointment booked today in a matter of minutes. Great job!

NOT IMPRESSED- re surrey/london areas

NOT IMPRESSED- re surrey/london areas
[-After being a doner for 35 plus years-]
-In August 2022 I was asked whether I would donate platelets, I agreed and was told I would be tested for platelet donation at my next session in Sept 2022.
-After the session I was told I would be contacted.
-No contact was made, so I phoned back.
- I was promised someone would contact me, they didn't.
-In Dec 2022,having heard nothing ,I phoned to make my next donation appointment, I explained I was having a small operation in January, so it had to be before then.
-I attended an appointment at Margaret St in the West End on 23 Dec 2022-I was told I could not donate as I was having an operation in January 2023!!!!!!
-I was annoyed at the incorrect information given, my wasted journey from surrey to the west end, I was given a complaint form to fill in, I asked to be called back by a manager.
-No one called me back, and later I was told this form had not been submitted.
-I phoned the 0300 number on at least 3 more occasions, each time asking for a call back from a manager ,on each occasion, I was told I would be called back within 18 days.
-NO ONE CALLED BACK.
-In March 2023 I called to try and book my next donation, I was told my record was 'on hold', there was no explanation why.
-Today 3/4/23 I phoned again, and eventually spoke to a Manager, who understood my frustration.
-So over the past 6 months on at least 6 occasions, mistakes have been made, wrong information given, messages not forwarded, no has replied to call back requests.
-And all I'm trying to do is donate blood/platelets!!!
-Not impressed..

UPDATE-I HAVE BEEN CONTACTED MY A MANAGER,ROB,WHO HAS RESOLVED MY COMPLAINT,AND WHO WILL LOOK INTO THE DREADFUL OUTSIDE COMPANY WHO TAKE CALLS ON BEHALF OF BLOOD AND TRANSPLANT.

I TURNED UP, WHY COULDN'T THE NHS DO SO

I arranged an appointment to give blood tonight. I'm shown on the website as still having an appointment, I have received a confirmation e-mail, 3 x texts reminding me (the latest this morning) and a letter.

I'm a single parent so I rely on childcare. I scrapped the snow off my car, wasted petrol driving to the venue, only to find that it was being used for pantomime.

I see from the reviews on this site, that this isn't the first time this has happened. I have previously given 50 times and they have lost another doner. This will ultimately have a lknock on effect on the NHS's ability to treat patients.

£millions will be spent on a new campaign to recruit new doners, when all they have to do is do the basics to keep the existing ones.

I work for the NHS in a patient facing role and hate to see incompetence on this scale, as it give's the NHS a bad image.

Twice now I have made an appointment to…

Twice now I have made an appointment to give blood, booked a day off from work, rearranged my schedule only to be told, five minutes before I left the house togive my donation, that they'd cancelled it. Phoned them to complain but the boy on the other end could not have cared less. I have asked them to remove my details from their database as they obviously don't need it as badly as they keep banging on about.

I phoned Norfolk House blood donor…

I phoned Norfolk House blood donor centre yeterday to try to make an appointment to donate platelets, but I couldn't get any sense out of the Northern Irish work experience boy that they had answering the phone. I gave up in the end. I'll maybe try again after the school holidays.

A shameful accusation and ban

In gratitude for a life-saving operation that saved my dad’s life and gave him an extra 30 years, and later operations that improved the quality of his life, I started giving blood soon after I turned 18. In my ’30s, in response to the IMPORTED CONTAMINATED BLOOD SCANDAL, I upped my game and for some years donated plasma and platelets monthly. At about 50 I took a long break, I’d had enough, but a few years ago they asked me, now an OAP, to start donating blood again. I was a bit surprised but happy to do that.

In early 2020, after a trip to Thailand, I was wrongly turned away because some areas carried extra risk but, as it turned out when I checked, not them, that did not apply to where I’d been, so I was able to donate a week later. But they had let me make a wasted trip, no skin off their nose. During Covid, when my local centre was unavailable, I did a 60-mile round trip to another centre, at my own expense of course.

In October 2021 I had a mild eye infection, Specsavers (working for the NHS) checked my eye and advised me to buy over-the-counter drops to clear it. I did that and thought nothing of it. A few days later, as I went to give blood, I ticked the relevant box to say what had happened. That meant I had to discuss it with a nurse.

In her office she told me that because of that minor treatment I couldn’t donate. Her attitude was awful, she displayed zero empathy for my wasted trip, again, and just couldn’t care less. As the penny dropped I felt angry. I stood up, said nothing, did nothing, I simply left her office and slammed the exit door to the unit, not her office, as I left. I was fuming for the rest of the day.

To make matters worse I had never (ever) been sent the health-check questionnaire in advance, as should have happened, due to a clerical error on their part.

I later learnt that the nurse said I was ‘aggressive’, at which I took offence. There were various lengthy phone calls and email exchanges seeking to resolve this matter, but I eventually made it clear that I would not resume donations unless the aggression accusation was withdrawn. Their response was to ban me!

I did make a complaint to the relevant ombudsman service and my contact there was very understanding. She told me that they couldn’t pursue my case due to their enormous workload. But what she did tell me was that based on what I told them, they did NOT consider my behaviour to have been aggressive and thought I was NOT at fault.

In my view, the nurse made a shameful baseless accusation, and the blood transfusion service, unsurprisingly, closed ranks and chose to back her not me. I find their ungrateful contemptuous response truly staggering, a real kick in the teeth. They want your blood but you are not allowed to display human emotions when provoked.

What Putin is doing in Ukraine is aggression, I was just angry at their incompetence and bad attitude.

This is purely for the donor services…

This is purely for the donor services in the West Midlands. In our area, Shropshire, it is nigh on impossible to get an appointment, especially for a new donor. It has taken me 2 years to get in despite receiving constant emails for new donors because ‘we are short in your area.’ My daughter has traveled 60 miles to Birmingham for her first donation and because her train was late, she called the help number who said they couldn’t contact the centre to ensure she’d get seen. When she got there, despite telling the helpline her new arrival time, they failed to tell her it would be closed. She called again to ask them to help her book a new appointment, preferably closer to home, and again they refused to help. An administratively shocking organisation.
