Worst car rental experience — Dante was EXTREMELY unprofessional. Stay far away.

I had a prepaid premium SUV reservation through American Express for Labor Day weekend because I was traveling with my family and needed a three-row SUV.

After waiting about 15–20 minutes, Dante completed my paperwork, took my deposit, and brought out an older GMC SUV. When I questioned whether it was really the same class as what I reserved, he told me it was the only vehicle available and said words to the effect of, “You’re lucky we even have this car. It’s Labor Day weekend.”

I was prepared to take it anyway — until I opened the doors.

The vehicle was covered in what appeared to be dog/pet hair throughout the seats, carpeting, and floors. This was not a few stray hairs. It was excessive and clearly visible. I have photos. One of my children is allergic to pet hair, so the vehicle was completely unsuitable.

When I pointed this out, Dante showed zero concern or apology and essentially told me I would have to wait another 30–45 minutes if I wanted it cleaned. His attitude was dismissive, confrontational, and condescending.

I then asked to cancel the rental and requested written confirmation since I had already signed the paperwork and paid a deposit. Dante told me it would be handled the next day. When I said I was not comfortable leaving without confirmation, he told me:

“You’re going to be here all day.”

Absolutely unacceptable.

Thankfully, Henry G. stepped in and handled the situation professionally. He contacted the district manager and provided me with confirmation that the rental was being voided. That made it even more obvious that Dante could have taken the same basic step from the beginning but simply chose not to.

I ultimately had to involve American Express to confirm the cancellation and refund.

Nearly two hours of our Labor Day weekend were wasted, our family trip was delayed, and I had to scramble to find another rental.

The dirty vehicle was bad enough. Dante’s attitude and complete lack of professionalism made the experience far worse.

Henry G. was excellent and deserves credit for stepping in.

Dante’s handling of this situation was completely unacceptable, and Hertz/Dollar management should seriously review it.

***UPDATE: Regional Manager Christine contacted me and was extremely professional and apologetic. The fact that Hertz cares enough about its customer experience to personally follow up means a lot. Their executive office also emailed me. Because of Christine’s excellent follow-up and the great service Henry provided at this location, I’ve updated my rating from 1 star to 3 stars.

This location is amazing. They are so nice. This is my go to rental location
