I rented an electric car from Hertz Hayward, CA. Nobody told me it had no spare tire, no jack, and no tools of any kind. Not at the counter, not in the paperwork they handed me, not anywhere.
Then I got a flat. I called Hertz Roadside, and they told me EVs “don’t come with spares” and “can’t be jacked up because they’re too heavy.” Apparently that’s common knowledge to everyone except the customers they rent these cars to. Their solution? I pay $300 for a tow truck to haul a car with one flat tire to a tire shop. On top of paying for the tire.
When I asked for a copy of my own rental agreement, roadside said they “don’t have access to it,” and nobody is in on weekends to get it. So Hertz can bill me any time, but I can’t see the contract I signed until Monday.
I’m happy to pay to fix a tire. I’m not happy to pay a $300 penalty because Hertz handed me a car that can’t deal with the most common problem on the road, and didn’t bother to tell me. A rental company that knows its cars can’t handle a flat should say so up front, or cover the tow itself.
Save yourself the headache. If you rent from Hertz, ask before you drive off whether the car has a spare. If it’s an EV, assume the answer is no and that you’ll be the one paying for it.

SLOW CHECK OUT AND DIRTY VEHICLES
I arrived at 10:30am to pick up my rental. I waited just about an hour to get my rental, there were only 2-3 people ahead of me. I finally got my DIRTY vehicle at 11:30. No one greeted or said "we will be with you shortly". Upon returning I told the representative that this is the third time I rented from this location and each time I received a dirty vehicle. His response was they at least vacuum the inside and the City of Hayward will fine them is they wash the vehicles.
