Fantastic support and help

I cannot recommend the Gastric Balloon Group enough. Apart from the fact I reached my goal with the balloon, I could not of done so without the help from all the team involved, including Sam, Helena and Lara. They are there for you all the time, either by email or phone and are genuinely so happy to help and encourage you on the journey, but most importantly after the balloon is removed. This is daunting as you are worried how life will be after it is gone, but they are there to help, advice and understand. It is worth the money for your happiness, health and to be part of a great group of professional caring people. Thank you all, Nicola

After many years of trying every diet, strategy, therapy, and “miracle science” available, I reached a point—both in age and physical health—where I realised that if I didn’t take action, my future would be impacted. I was living with constant back and joint pain, low self-esteem, zero motivation, and I was unfit and withdrawing from social situations. My weight and how I felt about myself were affecting not just my health, but my job, my family, and my friendships too.
Taking the step toward a gastric balloon was a big but necessary leap, and I was nervous. But from the very beginning, I was supported—not pressured—every step of the way. I was guided, reassured, and genuinely cared for. No question was ever treated as silly, and every member of the team, from admission to the surgeon, treated me with kindness, dignity, and respect.
The procedure itself was smooth and completely free from pain or complications. Every detail—medication, aftercare, preparation—was handled thoroughly and professionally. I was sedated for both the insertion and removal of the balloon, and I felt no pain, stress, or uncertainty during any part of the process.
During the 12 months I had the balloon, I was supported by Sam Adams (Health Coach)—and what an absolute treasure he is. Sam is clear, honest, encouraging, motivating, and refreshingly real. It’s hard to choose just one word to describe him because he embodies everything you’d hope for in a coach. Promises big, delivers little

I could have bought a 20 month supply of Ozempic or Mounjaro for the amount spent on the balloon which deflated around the 90 day mark. I'm 4 days after the warranty expired and I didn't take the extended warranty (looks like these balloons were never meant to last the 4 months stated, feel conned). Don't get me wrong I have lost 15 pounds about a pound a week. I could have done the same for less money and less discomfort. (The insertion and the body trying to reject the balloon for two plus days is no cruise.) The aftercare tapers off and it feels like self service. I have a busy job with lots of online meetings so unscheduled calls between 9-5 are not helpful. The app is basic compared with other food diaries and very US based so had to continue using my fitbit food diary. I had so many calls prior to buying to make sure it was right for me but felt a hard sell at the same time. The consultant who inserted couldn't have been less friendly or seem to want to be anywhere but there that day albeit lovely on phone for pre- checks. The diet and fitness advice can be found free all over web. Hand on heart can't recommend...hi ho it's off to Ozempic I go.

Thank you for your feedback Catherine, I’m sorry to hear you have not been completely happy with your gastric balloon journey. The Allurion balloon is designed to be in situ for 16 weeks (4 months) but we do highlight upfront that the deflation date cannot be exactly predicted and can be a couple of weeks either side. Your balloon deflated within the expected range but we do appreciate you feel a little disappointed that it was a couple of weeks less than you hoped.

The manufacturer offers a replacement warranty of 90 days to ensure that all patients have their balloon for a guaranteed length of time, your balloon deflated at 94 days so outside of this minimum period. For your peace of mind, the extended warranty covers early removal due to intolerance so would not have applied in this situation.

With regards to your aftercare, we would like the opportunity to extend your aftercare package as you do not appear to have utilised the support on offer whilst your balloon was in place. You still have available your 1-1 dietitian and health coach appointments to benefit from individual guidance on nutrition intake, fitness and behaviour change. Even though your balloon has now passed, these appointments will help you protect your well-earned weight loss result and continue your efforts for further weight gain if that is your plan.

I am sorry if you felt the aftercare did not meet your needs. We very much understand that patients find it difficult to take unscheduled calls which is why we send monthly emails asking how you wish to be contacted each month, either by phone with a suitable day/time, by email or not at all. In your monthly responses, you requested email or no contact. When you requested email contact, we responded to offer advice and further support but when you requested no contact, we respected this and made no further contact that month. Had you requested a call, we would have arranged this at a suitable day/time. Don’t forget, if out of hours support is easier, you also have access to dietitians via the app in the 24/7 messenger room.

Amazing Journey so far

My experience of having a gastric balloon through the Gastric Balloon Group has been exemplary.
6 months since the procedure. I decided to go for the 6 month balloon. Went for the procedure at the end of October. Balloon removed end of February - it deflated itself. I have lost 31 kg (just under 5 stone).
The team especially Sam have been so helpful and supportive from the very start. Always with advice and assistance and I would strongly suggest attending the team seminars as you learn so much which is also really helpful.
I have received constant support throughout this journey and have a catch up call with Sam on a monthly basis as a general check in, although, if needed he is always available any time.
Thank you everyone for helping me on this journey.

From the start of my journey with GBG…

From the start of my journey with GBG last year, they have been extremely helpful. Whether it was through email or phone conversations.. they have answered any concerns or queries.
They have also been very accommodating to help me when iv had to move dates/locations of procedure.
You have access to the App and everything is available to you use however much or little.
They sent check in emails but also gave the option that if everything was going OK you could opt out of a phonecall app. I personally found this great as you don't always want/like be called for continuously for well being checks.
It's down to you how much effort you put in to the app and attending the courses.
But every interaction I have had has been great.
If you are seriously thinking of getting a balloon. I highly recommend them

Amazing journey with GBG great support and over 25% weight loss

I've had an amazing journey with The Gastric Balloon Group. I opted for the sequential Balloon Allurion Plus. This one is swallowed then filled with saline once in position in your stomach. After just over 90 days it deflated itself and is passed through your digestive system. I chose this method as it is very safe and doesn't require removal orally.

I felt the weight I needed to lose was stubborn and had taken years to accumulate so I'd maybe need more time to lose it effectively. I made the right decision. The treatment costs the same with other companies but I chose GBG as they specialise in Gastric balloons and they also allowed me to pay part of it in installments with 0% interest rate.
I'm so delighted that it's worked for me and now my 2nd balloon has passed I'm doing well and feel able to maintain my weight loss as I have lots of new eating habits and still have ongoing support from GBG for another 6 months. You have minimum 2 months break between both balloons and I had 4 months break and didn't gain or lose weight in this time so I know I can maintain it now also.
The support and guidance I've had has been extremely helpful and positive especially Sam for his nutritional support - hes very knowledgeable and positive and Nurse Sally who was my main contact with my 1st balloon. She was so helpful and nurturing.

I've learned a lot through this experience and despite experiencing side effects ie disgusting burps (due to food build up on the balloon) and nausea/sickness I never regretted it for a second.
I'm 52 and now back to the weight I was when I was 19. I feel much more confident, like myself more, excercise is much easier and I now enjoy shopping in Zara which has been one of my highlights.
This in my experience and from research I did is an extremely safe and sensible method of losing weight long term and I'd recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

Shoddy service and unprofessional

Would not recommend this company. I had the 12 month balloon inserted last April and was scheduled to have it removed today. On arrival at the clinic, just as I was about to enter the premises, I received a telephone call cancelling the procedure due to the consultant being ill. The clinic is over an hour from my home.

Now for those of you who do not know what is involved with the removal, you need to fast and be on a liquid diet for 4 days. On the day of the procedure, you are required to bring someone with you to drive you home as you will be sedated. This means 2 people taking time off work. This cancellation has resulted in lost time at work, limited diet for 4 days resulting in a lot of hunger etc. and impacted my wellbeing with the company response which was simply “we are sorry but there is nothing else we can do”.

You are also told that if you do not follow the pre removal diet and there are any traces of solid foods in your stomach, the procedure may be abandoned at a cost of £1000 to the client.

I believe that failing to uphold the same level of accountability as a service provider as expected from a client is a breach of professionalism and contract. It is also double standards on behalf of the company.

Along with all of this, the balloon itself isn’t the best weight loss option. You loose weight initially because of the sickness and diarrhoea… never mind the hair loss. Then your body adjusts and you plateau.

I have made a formal complaint today and I am to receive a response within 20 days. The telephonist who took my call back refused to allow me to speak to the Managing Director also.

We fully understand how difficult it can be to fast for a removal and how frustrating it will have been for you that the procedure couldn't go ahead, particularly as you had travelled such a distance. Got ready for a pre planned procedure…

Got ready for a pre planned procedure arranged by yourselves. This involved me taking time off my business causing me to shut my shop for 3 days. This also caused issues because of my mother being disabled, my brother took time off work to look after my mother due to my absence. Received a phone call at 9:50 the day of my appointment telling me that they can’t go ahead due to being no balloon at the surgery. Bear in mind this was a pre planned procedure. I explained this has now caused me financial problems, due to the fact I’m self employed and having to now take time off for the next appointment. I expressed my concerns, and they said there’s nothing the can do about it. I then contacted customer care again and they said it’s not their problem. I explained I will make a formal complaint however they weren’t interested. My feedback on trustpilot is to make people aware of how this company operates. From this I would not recommend. As it just seems once they have your money, they are not interested afterwards.

I am very sorry Lori that your procedure was cancelled yesterday. This was an administrative error in our stock delivery system for which I sincerely apologise. I am pleased that we were able to advise of the issue before you began travelling to clinic but I fully understand how frustrating it is that your plans and preparations were disrupted. I understand that this appointment was for the placement of your second balloon in your sequential package and as your placement has now been rebooked for 2 weeks time, I will ensure that your app access is extended for a further month so you do not lose out on access to the app throughout your time with your second balloon.

My Weightloss journey with GBG…

I'm sharing my review & my current journey to help anyone who is considering having the Gastric balloon put in.
I'm currently 5 weeks in with the balloon & have lost nearly 2 stone already! I chose the Obera 365 balloon which is for 12 months as I felt this option suited me best. I've had some sickness which has mainly been due to me adjusting to the amount of food & fluid my stomach can comfortably hold at one time, but u get used to the amount your stomach can consume, its just abit of trial & error to begin with. I cant feel the balloon in place & have never had any pain with it either.
Regarding GBG what can I say about this company besides giving them 10/10. From start to finish everyone involved in my procedure, before & after care have been so kind, polite & very helpful. From Hayley who originally provided me with all the info I needed to consider having the balloon in, she chatted me through the process over the phone & gave me answers to all my questions & concerns with no pressure for me to have the procedure whatsoever. I spoke with the consultant who performed the procedure & the GBG nursing team all ahead of procedure day, who checked I was happy with the arrangements & again checked if I had any concerns.
The procedure itself was fine, I was sedated so felt nothing & I was very well looked after at St Josephs in Newport. The aftercare I've received has been fantastic too & I know I can contact GBG 24/7 via their app for full support from healthcare team to nutritionists. The app even has plenty of recipes & dietary advice & weightloss fitness videos to help u push along your weightloss.
I paid for my procedure in full but there was the option to pay part deposit & the rest on 0% interest finance. If you are seriously considering having a gastric balloon, I cant recommend this company enough. I'm not normally a person that leaves reviews on anything but credit where credit is due, this company has been great.

Orbera365 Warning

I had the Orbera365 17th May 2024, everything seemed ok at the beginning, but three months later I will still being sick most days and also making myself sick because the pain in my chest was so bad. The last week in August, after not keeping any fluids down, I was admitted to hospital with fatally low potassium levels. So low it took four days in hospital, nine bags of potassium and one day in ICU so they could put the line directly into my neck, just to get my potassium to a safe level where they could remove the balloon, which had dislodged. The doctors were shocked I had not been requested to get blood tests or asked to go back for a check up. Threes months of being sick constantly and nearly dying, £5500 debt and I was only offered £1000 refund as GBG didn't need to take the balloon out. Yes I knew there may be some risks but I didn't realise leaving my son without a mother might be one of them.

We're very sorry that you had such a difficult experience with your balloon Joanne. As you mention, there are risks to gastric balloon placement and intolerance, although a small risk, is a known complication. I can see from your patient record that the nurses were supporting you with dietary tips, medication changes and a change in eating technique to try and resolve your symptoms. You did have periods where the symptoms improved and vomiting stopped and it was hoped that you would settle into your journey but unfortunately the symptoms continued to return and removal became the only option. As per our terms and conditions you were eligible for a £1000 refund as your balloon was not removed by ourselves and this was duly processed the day of your NHS removal. Although your balloon has been removed, you still have access to all of the support services as part of your aftercare package and the dietitian / Health Coach will be happy to help you continue your weight loss efforts post-removal with advice on diet and activity. Give the team a call or book your 1-1 appointments via the app

This has been a major help is the feeling they care . Easily booked and payment plans if needed , lots of information provided at different times , scales provided and an app that seems complicated but early days for me .

First few days sickness , subsided on day 3 so looking forward to the future and will update in the future but for now I recommend.

The care from my initial call expressing an interest, to pre-placement assessments, procedure and after care have been excellent. This is definitely the best decision I made in 2024. I would not hesitate to recommend gastric balloon group to others who are looking at weight loss options.

great people, very helpful and supportive throughout. the reason I have dropped a star is because I am unhappy about the use of nhs facilities for private medicine, and frankly the facilities are not of the level you expect and pay for in private medical facilities.

In reference to NHS facilities, I just want to reassure you that your procedure was fully private with your specialist consultant. Your clinic Derby Private Health offers privately booked procedures through the Royal Derby Hospital and although an NHS hospital, this is a privately contracted service.
