Don't waste your money

As a web designer with extensive WordPress knowledge, this bootcamp was a waste of money. It took me over 700 applications to get hired as a Web Support Specialist. The "skills" I learned were not enough to enter into an entry level Front-end or Back-end position. If you are willing to learn independently for MONTHS after graduation - treating it as a FT job then this might be your school. Otherwise - go to CodeAcademy - complete personal projects - enroll in their Full-Stack track and save yourself thousands of dollars. Coding Dojo employees former students as their instructors with no industry experience - same applies for their TA's.

Shop around a bit

I did the 20-week data science program and it taught me the basics of what a data analyst and data engineer does. Note the difference! You will need experience and training beyond this course to make it as a data scientist. The certificate is way too expensive in my opinion. If you are a beginner, you definitely will learn a bunch and it will take 25 hours per week at a minimum to understand. The teachers were cool and they gave us plenty of opportunities to ask for help beyond the weekly meetings. However, the "career service" was just Zoom calls explaining how to connect on Linked In. To land a career as an analyst, you will likely need a bachelor's degree to compete with the hundreds of other resumes. This course might benefit someone who knows how to start a business with a few other people. Other than that, you will need to either know someone in the field willing to hire you or go all out on their career path via Linked-In (message 10 people per day) to gain employment. However, you can find basic data science courses for less than $50 to test out the waters before committing to a course of this magnitude and expense.

Don't fall for their scam

Don't fall for their scam. I graduated from their software development program in 2023. Their curriculum was grabbed from free online sources, they lied about the graduated rates and the placement rates. They lied about helping you get a job as well. All the career service managers ever did was provide you with an excel sheet listing links of job sites and resources that any one can find by googling it themselves. Also half the links they provided were from websites that do not exist anymore. They also had limited space for helping you in meetings and then blamed you for not seeing them when "time is available". Coding Dojo sells their program as good for you any age, any place in life, as being able to transition into the tech field when in reality they used inflated numbers. Anyone that could not find a job that ended up freelancing on fiverr or volunteering and working for free was counted as "hired" and "successful" in Coding Dojo's eyes. All my instructors were previous students of theirs that hadn't found a job yet. All our TA's were also previous graduates from which only 1/3 of them were actually any good to help with problems that came up, however, none of them were good when it came to you trying something new for a project. Essentially, if it wasn't in the curriculum then they did not know anything about it or how to help you. Most of the time, you had more help and learned more from other students after the program ended. I have learned more from Udemy courses, Coursera courses, and free coding websites than from Coding Dojo bootcamp. Now I am stuck with a PRIVATE student loan from a servicing company that Coding Dojo pushes for you to use and that loan servicer does not care about lowering payments, postponing payments more than 3 months for a total of 9 months, or any help at all. Most of us are still out of a job or had to go back to our old job now with more debt. Some of us, including myself, have filed for bankruptcy because a $500 private student loan monthly payment is ridiculous when we can barely afford a living in this economy. Coding Dojo and Ascent Funding should be sued for putting so many students through financial hardship and should refund students their money.

Money could've been better spent

I like many people signed up to Coding Dojo because they made the claim of having you job ready to make a transition in to Cyber Security. After completing the course I can say that it does not help prepare you to be job ready. The program does a good job of introducing you to the field but that is about it, an introduction. $16K for an introduction to the cyber security world is way to much in my opinion. The first 8 weeks are supposed to help prepare you for the ComTIA Security+ exam and I am glad I paid money for other resources because they didn't cover most all the topics that are on the test. Professor Messor has a YouTube playlist dedicated to the Security+ exam and that by far, was more helpful in preparing me for the test which I passed but I had to binge watch those videos in between keeping up with the classwork of Coding Dojo... and the Professor Messor videos are available for FREE!!!! I know they have built their reputation based on coding and I've heard great things about that but their Cyber security stack has many holes and flaws. The assignments are too elementary to be considered work experience. It causes more frustration than learning because there were plenty of times where you had to request help from a TA because the lab assignment would not work as it should. The online lesson are far from being beginner friendly and the staff although they are nice and helpful are not experts in the field. A few of them received the same certifications we paid to learn about while I was studying with the company. In my opinion you would be much better off doing Googles Cyber Security Cert or even ISC2 Certified in Cyber Security and save your pockets in the process. The Career Coordinator they promised has yet to meet with me due to an internal shifting of staff. I went through a 6 month boot camp and met with someone once. I am speaking as a person who was able to was achieve the tops honors of the program Triple Black Belt. Just unacceptable quality for the price paid for the package.

Cybersecurity

Introduction:
I chose the Dojo Cyber Security bootcamp based on positive reviews from friends who completed their full-stack bootcamp. The curriculum seemed promising, with a focus on Security+, SyCA+, and CEH certifications. However, my experience with the bootcamp left me feeling disappointed.

Details:
The bootcamp consisted of 24 weeks, with 8 weeks dedicated to each certification. I was expecting to receive in-depth knowledge of each certification and the ability to pass the exams after completing the respective module.
However, the lectures were 4 hours per week, which quickly became monotonous with basic slides on the screen. While we did have belt exams after each 8 weeks, they were nowhere near as difficult as the real CompTIA exams. In order to pass the certifications, I had to rely on free YouTube tutorials to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.
The bootcamp lacked any group technical projects, which was disappointing as I was hoping to gain practical experience and work on my teamwork skills. Additionally, I was underwhelmed by the HR team's support in helping me prepare for job interviews. They only provided basic Q&A sessions and checked our resumes a few times. It seemed like they were not invested in helping graduates find employment.
Overall, the bootcamp felt like an illusional project, designed to make us feel like we were doing something worthwhile. It certainly was not worth the high cost of $15,000+. There are other free resources available, such as Professor Messer and HacktheBox, which offer more practical exercises and hands-on experience.

Improvements:
To improve the bootcamp, I would suggest making the belt exams more challenging and ensuring that students are fully prepared to pass the certifications. It would also be beneficial to include more practical exercises and group projects to help students gain real-world experience. Finally, the HR team could provide more comprehensive job preparation and practice interviews to help graduates secure employment.

Conclusion:
Overall, while the idea of the Dojo Cyber Security bootcamp is good, the execution leaves much to be desired. It is only worth around 20% of the cost and requires additional studying outside of the limited lectures to pass the certifications. I would not recommend this bootcamp to others.

Too Expensive - No Company Interest in Credential

Coding Dojo markets its cybersecurity program to easily get the skills you need to enter the world of cybersecurity - no IT experience needed. They are correct that one doesn't need IT knowledge and one can muddle one's way through the content. Coding Dojo touts a very high job placement rate which may be based on coding boot camp, not cybersecurity. Basically, if you don’t have a good 2-3 years of IT knowledge, no employer is going to give you a look for a cyber job. Yes, the industry is growing, but so is the number of people who have “fallen” for the overpromised boot camp claims. The teaching style is comprehensive but boring as heck. The materials are poorly put together and riddled with errors. It is taught by cyber experts, but NOT educators so the approach is not conducive to engagement or memorability. The labs are great for hands-on experience, but most students spend a ton of the time on zoom calls with TAs because no guidance is given on how to complete the work. Coding Dojo says to use the “20-minute rule” – if you don’t get the concept in 20 minutes, find a TA (who generally are booked out 3 days)! For almost $15,000, students should be getting better materials and training. Many of my classmates had to go into debt to take the part-time course and now have no job. Many graduates become TAs because they can’t get hired! The program is newer than their coding boot camps so still needs some work. I am writing this review so that others don’t get lured into their false promises. Look elsewhere for a new career!

Response to Coding Dojo: the career services are a joke - I know how to write a resume and a LinkedIn profile. I spoke with career services and they were like "this looks good!". If you are just out of school, perhaps these are great services, but with over 20 years of experience - not that useful. Coding Dojo does not have connections to hiring companies. The jobs they post are from public sites and NONE are for cybersecurity.

Great for slackers!

First, let me say, if you are looking for an easy way to get a certificate, THIS IS THE WAY TO GO! For starters, you don't even have to do the homework. After the first 'stack', where I busted my ass to get the assignments in, the instructor told me they don't get checked anyway. So I didn't bother submitting any more. Which is OK, because the exam was a joke that I had no trouble passing even without doing the homework. Their claim that the instructors are 'industry professionals' was a lie. I had 5 instructors. Only one had any experience. The rest were just recent graduates with no experience in the field. I admit it was a bit expensive, but, considering I didn't really have to do any work to graduate, it isn't too bad.

Pros and Cons

Pros: instructors, overall curriculum, helping build your resources to be a full stack developer, the online learning platform.

Cons: Career services team. The team is overburdened and doesn’t have the ability to support all students. Example - sending a resume to review. Not hearing back for 2 weeks and then them completing it during a meeting. They also don’t have connections with companies to help get you placed.

Thanks to the Dojo. I was able to do a lot of things that I never thought I could do. It's great that it's a promising career with a great future. They keep you focused on intense work but with such an effort to reinforce student learning. Definitely a great place to start a new journey in tech.

College life was not for me.

Bootcamps / trade schools are a great alternative to College, especially if you are uncertain on what you want your career or life to be. Coding dojo provided me with all the resources I will need to be successful in the course. I got to work at my own pace or work ahead. They have a structure for attendance and assignments, so you wont feel like you don't know what to work on next or where to be. Each instructor has their own way of teaching, some might work for you others might not, but you have the platform and your classmates to reach out to.

Triple Stack for the price of One!

To each's own, with a grain salt, If you need to see an entire application built from start to finish Dojo has a demanding curriculum that will take you there. It took me years after college and running my own team that exposed my shortcomings of building an entire application from all directions (web/mobile).

I am nearly 40-years-old, dropped out of college while attempting to pursue a CS degree, then opted to build a tech start-up from scratch as Founder/Investor.... all have failed until I attended Coding Dojo.

The process is called "Drinking from a firehose". Normally, it would take approximately 5 years in regular college setting to learn software engineering. Coding Dojo on-site Burbank, took me there with 3 separate stacks within 14 weeks.

The most important part of becoming a developer is attaining the ability of becoming a determined self-sufficient Developer. All the instructors and staffs at the Coding Dojo were a tremendous help in reaching my developer skills. They were understanding of life events and I went through plenty. For example, I had court cases, hospital newborn emergencies, care broke down twice ( 80 mile daily ) , my close friend on their death bed, then attending their funeral. I was still determined to complete my course.

Now being comfortable building projects in MERN, Java, and Python, I have the ability to continue learning other languages such as C++ (college attempt).

Coding Dojo's Curriculum, On-site Instructors, and student support were all magnificent throughout the course in helping achieve something I thought I would be unachievable.

I took this bootcamp because I wanted to switch into Data Science

I took this bootcamp because I wanted to improve my data science/ programming skills. My background is in International Business and I am switching into this field. I found it great! I was a beginner in programming without a background in math, computer science or statistics so I wanted to try a bootcamp where some previous knowledge was not required. Coding Dojo helps you with a week of pre-bootcamp and then you start the whole bootcamp. I really liked that since the beginning people contact you, your counselor, your instructor, career services, etc. They give you immediate access to the learning platform, to the schedule, to the activities, etc. I feel that you do not get lost with all the new things you have to learn and do. I have taken other online courses/bridges programs and it did feel like you were there by yourself and if you learn something good for you because 'we do not care' and it was totally different with Coding Dojo. They give you real support! The platform is very interactive, Instructors and TA's really help you, they send you emails when you are behind asking how they can help, etc. The community and classmates were very nice too, they helped me many times. I can say that it is worth the money and your time.

Software Development Full-Time Online Review

Coding Dojo is one of six coding bootcamps I researched when I first decided to make a career change and move into programming. While I was making my decision to attend I found the staff to be pleasant, engaging, and capable. They always answered me promptly and referred me to sources that would help if they didn't directly/immediately know themselves. I ultimately decided to attend based on that and on the program they offered... it was one of the few that provided study in more than one programming language and that didn't insist on a Microsoft-centric learning experience.

Once in the program I found the curriculum to be directed and the instructors to be engaging. The time commitment is intensive (they make sure to acknowledge that continuously before you start) and it's easy to find yourself falling behind on daily expectations, but there were always resources available to help catch you back up - including TAs, access to Zoom classrooms, an active Discord for your cohort, and the ability to schedule 1-on-1s with the instructor. The testing paradigm to progress through the stacks is consistent and the scoring does offer students an opportunity to distinguish themselves.

Now, none of this is to say that Coding Dojo's program is perfect. During my cohort, at least, there wasn't a very solid sense of necessity during the project week that concludes each stack. Testing happens before then and can even run into that time if there are a lot of retakes and the project didn't have any bearing on your success or failure overall. There was also little import as to whether you should do them in a group or alone. Also, while there is an investment in the course materials to encourage students to do extra research on specific topics and to venture out to learn more about other languages, interfaces, and libraries, there are a few aspects of that where the program is definitely lacking. The most important of which I see as unit testing.

Outside of the program, Career Services is the other aspect to consider here. My experience overall has not been the most consistent. It is improving, but I had a rocky start from early on. A lot of my cohort-mates, however, swear by their CSMs and have since early on in the program. The alumni Discord is active and there are regular emails with job listings, activities/programs, and new partnerships the Dojo is taking on. All-in-all, there's a comprehensive after-program program... you just have to invest yourself in accessing it. Thankfully, it never really goes away, they say you have life-time access.
