Good, but not great
I initially signed up for the counselling level 5 course, but was told I needed to do the hypnotherapy level 3 course as well. I did it, and as interesting as it was, it just seemed like a money grabbing scheme. I am now in my 3rd year of studies and am doing my placement. Placement was easy enough to find, however their directory is not helpful. I informed them that some of the placements in my area was closed, and they did nothing about updating their system, in fact they were still on there the last time I checked. I chose a placement with children, because I want to become a child counsellor, and I was told that I couldn’t unless the placement had substantial training, which I did the training and it took me nearly 2 days complete! It was very comprehensive! I informed Chrysalis, and they told me the training I did was not enough to work with children, and that I would be required to attend their own training if I wanted to continue my placement and work with children. So I did, the course was in Manchester, over 4 hours away from my home, and in the middle of the week, so I had to take time off work for it, not to mention the extortionate amount of money they wanted for the 3 day course. I did it, because I was felt I was given no other option, only to find that the course had less information in it than the 2 day training I did with my placement. So yet again, another money grabbing scheme.
The counselling course itself, once you pass your first year, is good. It’s interesting and has a lot of information and I’ve taken important life and counselling skills away from it. The let down is the money grabbing side of things.
So, if you’ve got the money to spare, go for it! If you’re on a budget, be weary

Thank you for reaching out Chrysalis, it is appreciated. However, I was the only person in my class to be asked to do this course, when several others were also working with CYP. The training I did with my placement was more comprehensive and informative than the course you required me to attend, so forgive me for thinking that this was a potential money grabbing opportunity. Almost everyone in my course who had done their training with their placement felt as though the additional chrysalis course was not required as they had already learnt it on their placement training. Now, don’t get me wrong, having the certificate will be a bonus, but the fact that I had already learnt 99% of the course with my placement did not sit well with me. My placement had even explained that they had a review meeting with Chrysalis to talk about this, but I was still informed I needed to go.
I have an open heart and mind to almost everything, and I am a hard worker who loves to learn new things, but being told I need to go to a course, that is very expensive, far from my home, and less informative than my placement training, when literally no other person in my class had to (and around 60% of my class are working with children). Not good at all. I have considered asking for at least some of my money back, because this just doesn’t seem fair.

I am pleased that you have taken so much from the course, have found it interesting and have learnt important skills from your time studying with us.
As the Level 5 Professional Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling Practice course focuses on counselling adults and does not specialise in Child and Young Person (CYP) counselling, we do require students who wish to work on placement with this client group attend additional training before we can sign off on a CYP placement. The requirements for external CYP training can be found on the Placement Checklist which is part of the Placements Brochure you would have received half way through Year 2 in readiness for Year 3. I understand that you had undertaken training with your placement provider, however it is essential that before we sign off on a CYP placement that we are assured that you have learnt the skills needed. Our 3 day Level 5 Certificate in Working with Children and Young People has been written and designed to meet the requirements of this. If you provided the details of the training you had undertaken on placement but the content did not match our requirements then yes, you would have been asked to complete this course prior to starting placement. To confirm, this is not a money-grabbing scheme but is how we can assure that the trainee counsellors working with a CYP client group are competent and ethically ready to practice. I am sorry to hear that this has been a source of upset for you, as we have a dedicated Placement Administrator within our Student Support Team, who is there to support and guide you through the process as needed.
To confirm, Year 1 of our 3 year course, the Level 3 Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Introduction to Counselling Skills, is required for students who do not already possess a Level 3 qualification in counselling skills. This course provides not only the foundational learning to complete Years 2 and 3, but also a route to becoming a qualified hypnotherapist. This means that by the end of Year 1 you can start your professional practice and gain a source of income while you complete your counselling training.

Overall I love the course
Overall I love the course. My tutor is amazing and very helpful. The course is a lot of hard work but the support is great. My only Nigel is having to put in a reasonable request for a table to sit at during class.

It is lovely to read your comments about the course, your tutor and the support you have received.
In terms of the classroom layout, chairs are set up in a U-Shape around the room with a top-table at the front for the tutor. Before your class you will have been given access on Moodle to all of the learning materials you will need for the day ahead, including videos and class notes so that you don't need to take notes during the day. We opt for this layout as tables can be a barrier between yourself, your tutor and your classmates which can be counter-productive when fostering relationships.
With this being said, should you, or any student, require a table or have other additional needs then Student Support can provide you with a Reasonable Adjustment Form to complete and will then look to ensure that adjustments are made as appropriate.

I have been a student with chrysalis…
I have been a student with chrysalis for nearly 2 years
The course offers so much however, trying to find a placement was very difficult and when I asked for help I was just given a list of places that were no where near me and just told to look at the list.
There should be more help with this because I almost gave up with my studies because I was so stressed about it.

I am sorry to read that you have found finding a placement hard. While the onus is on you to find and secure your placement, our Student Support Team are there to help. I believe the list that you were given was a link to our placements e-directory which details local and national placement providers around the UK who we have built relationships with, and are therefore happy to work with Chrysalis students. We always suggest that this is a good starting point for students who are looking to secure a placement as there is currently around 450 organisations listed. We also share on the e-directory adverts that are provided directly from placement providers who are recruiting for trainee counsellors. Adverts are also shared in our student newsletter.
With this being said, your feedback is always welcome as we strive to improve and I will therefore share your comments with our Student Team Manager.

I like the information on the website and Moodle. The tutor is very supportive and knowledgeable.
I had an issue with starting my placement. One person said I could start before module 8 and sent all my paperwork. It was very unprofessional explaining to my placement Chrysalis has messed up.

I decided that one day per month was not substantial enough. I also felt the cost each month quite extensive. I have recently moved house and feel this is too much of a financial burden.

Our classes are held once a month as we offer part-time study routes to becoming a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist. While this will be a more desired route for many students, I can appreciate that it may not be for all. With classes held once a month, students are expected to complete assignments, read class and course notes, watch videos on Moodle and practice skills learnt between each class. In your final year you will also be required to undertake 100 hours of clinical placement in addition to attending your monthly class.
I am sorry to hear that you have felt that your monthly course fees have been a monthly burden. Our 'pay monthly' payment plans are in place to help students who do not wish to pay the full course fee upon initial enrolment.
Don't forget our Student Support Team is available between 9-5 Monday to Friday. Should you wish to seek guidance and support with your next steps please do reach out to them, they would be happy to talk things through with you.
Course application was online and very straightforward

The programme tutor is excellent. She manages to keep the class fully engaged during our monthly all-day study sessions.

Completing the Chrysalis Diploma in Hypnotherapy & Introduction to Counselling Skills has been an incredible journey of both personal and professional growth. The course content is not only comprehensive and engaging, but also deeply reflective — encouraging genuine self-awareness, empathy, and confidence in applying therapeutic skills.
What stood out most for me was how well the balance was struck between theory, practice, and personal development. Every module built upon the last, allowing me to truly integrate what I was learning and see the impact in my own life and in the way I work with others.
Our tutor, Nicola, was absolutely outstanding. Her knowledge, warmth, and ability to create a safe, supportive learning environment made all the difference. She facilitated each session with professionalism and compassion, encouraging open discussion and reflection while maintaining clear ethical and professional boundaries. Nicola’s feedback was always constructive and insightful, helping me to develop not only my technical skills but also my confidence and self-belief as a practitioner.

Benefitting Others Already in Year One
I wasn't so keen on the subject of the first year being hypnotherapy, but I've learnt so much. Very interesting and has impacted my full time work supporting others remarkably.
Karl our tutor is very open and congruent, which makes him approachable. His sense of humour, down to earth and laid back personality keeps the the environment comfortable, calm and relaxed.
He's been encouraging, helpful and supportive throughout the process and the above conditions allowed for honesty and growth.
I think student support send video call invites weekly. I had to take a few months out for health reasons (nothing to do with the course) and they made the process simple. I was motivated to recover as quickly as possible because I wanted so much to get back the course. They put placed me where I left off in Karl's class.
It's not hard but be mindful that it is a good amount of work to qualify in this discipline in one year. If you keep to the 8 hour per week dedication to prepare your mindset for your career to start though, you can get it done without cramming to complete it last minute as a lot of us did!

Student Support do send weekly invitations for our video drop-in sessions, these are non-mandatory but are there for students who may wish to talk to the Support Team about their queries face to face. The team are there to help and guide our students throughout their journey with Chrysalis and it is great to hear that they were so supportive while you deferred your studies and then returned when you were able.

Super helpful and will recommend
The overall experience has been super helpful for me to study and still work full time. The structure of sessions and independent work have helped me grow in so many skills and learn new ones. My year one tutor Karl Shanahan has been excellent and helped me grow in knowledge and confidence. I have already recommended Chrysalis to a friend.
