I’ve contacted Chicago Music Exchange twice to ask for a discount on a bass guitar. The contact was approximately two months apart, with the same sales associate. They won’t even offer you ten percent. They also won’t respond when you decline their offer and thank them for their time, feels petty to me. They seem out of touch. Zero stars for senior sales specialist David A.
It has taken me a year since my purchase from CME to finally decide to post a review about them. It's complicated. I bought a Gretsch G5622 from them on the Reverb platform, after they sent me an offer of $625 for this guitar typically priced at $799 online. It seemed like a no brainer. A year later, I am mostly happy with the guitar, after getting a replacement.
Here's the thing. I believe they are passing off B Stock when they do these deep discounts. This is because the first one I received had a heavily flawed paintjob, and the replacement they sent me ALSO had flaws (less serious) to the paint. Now, one might ask "why are you complaining? They took care of you right?" They did indeed, after some hassles, and their attempt to persuade me to take a10% discount on the first guitar. One might also ask "why are you complaining? Getting a discounted guitar with a warranty is BETTER than buying B Stock, which usually comes with no factory warranty."
Well - Let's unpack that. I believe this online retailer is using this strategy to send off their hard-to-sell B Stock under false pretenses. This is fundamentally wrong and it's problematic because it is much easier to accept the flaws that come with B Stock if you are intentionally purchasing B Stock.
Two guitars and a handful of phone calls later, sure, I have a mostly great guitar with clear coat peeling in a tiny area on the neck joint. Not a dealbreaker, but I would have paid a few bucks more to avoid the hassle and heartburn, and I will NOT be doing business with CME again.
Beware of their deeply discounted guitars.
It’s taking over 14 days to get some accessories shipped. Non responsive customer service.
I gave this place a shot because of its inventory and because it is a "local" business (I am in the Chicago metropolitan area). I ordered an audio interface. Ordinarily UPS and Fedex are next day local delivery. Instead they opted to send my purchase "snail mail" and, while E-mailing me well before noon, by evening the package had not been received by the postal service. It is now the next day and nothing has changed -- they told me they shipped my order and obviously that didn't happen. When I contacted them I was told it was a "small order" and that they are sent "snail mail." Had I known this I would have ordered from Amazon or Sweetwater which both provide better service at the same price. I made the mistake trusting this store which has a very indifferent approach to customer service. By contrast, Sweetwater treats "small orders" the same as larger ones and treats customers with respect. When I pointed this out I was told that they are a bigger concern. (Maybe they got to be big by providing good service -- and Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Sweetwater is based, is a far smaller town than Chicago.) Sad to say that we in the Chicago area get better service from Fort Wayne or Amazon. At this point I don't know when or even if I will get my order. I won't do business with this company again. That would not have been the case if they had better and more attentive customer service. And that's too bad because they COULD be a good place if they put just a little more effort into it. But they don't care and that indifference makes all the difference.
I've received extremely good service from the CME/Reverb team two times out of two times requesting help. The latest instant is just jaw-dropping.
I ordered two items from them but had them shipped to a forwarder instead of directly to me overseas, to save on shipping costs, and because one of the items won't ship outside of USA. I received two different tracking IDs very quickly, and this was a surprise to me as I expected them to be shipped together. This would mean the forwarder would charge me for two packages, each carrying a minimum charge.
I messaged CME to see what can be done and received a response very quickly. As it turned out, the items were at different warehouses. The representative actually intercepted both sides, and got one of the items to be transferred so that they can be shipped together. I can't think of any other time I've had a customer service representative done so much for me in such little time. Thank you Joseph! I buy music gear from USA online stores very regularly, and now CME will be my first stop whenever I need something.
