Went into Bensons for Beds in Colchester dealt with Paul, good lad, what I liked was there was no pressure, nothing more annoying than salesmen hassling you, but we asked Paul lots of questions, and he redirected us and knew all the products which was great, we had an idea of "good makes" of bed, but we wanted to see which way Paul directed, and he was neutral and honest all the way through all good and the after service at the moment with texts, and emails is really good - so far so good although not got the bed yet, now I need to decorate the bedroom ! ha ha

Absolutely amazing. I was served by the store manager and came in just before closing. He didn’t make me feel uncomfortable or that I was keeping him behind. Huge Thankyou.

He listened to our needs, recommended to us the most suitable bed frames and mattresses and then offered us discounted prices.

We needed a new bed to replace our old one which was almost 30 years old. The salesman who sold us the bed was very helpful, there were many beds to try in the shop. We chose the mattress which was most comfortable and them decided to add a new base and headboard.
On delivery day everything went as planned, our old bed was removed and taken away and the new one delivered and set up as planned. The delivery people were pleasent, turned up in good time and did a good job negotiating the twist and turns of our stairs.I can't fault our experience in any way.

Excellent service from Paul in the show room to good communication with a delivery slot being advised a few days before delivery. The delivery men called 10 mins before delivery to advise that they were on their way. Old mattress removed and new one delivered without any problems.

I HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH A BAD EXPERIENCE with a UK retailer as I have had with Bensons for Beds.
MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO KNOW THIS: When buying a mattress, the store staff did NOT make me sign their customer checklist and did not explain the 20% cancellation/reselection fee at all - not verbally, not in writing, and not before I paid. That is the core reason I am leaving this review that nobody can trust Bensons.
I spent £1,408.99 on a mattress, on 10 June 2026. I was NOT asked to sign any checklist confirming that I understood a 20% penalty. I was not shown or talked through this policy before paying. The Terms and Conditions link was only emailed to me AFTER THE PAYMENT had already gone through, even though the T&Cs say I need to read them and understand them before the sale - THE STAFF DID NOT DO THIS. In my view, that is completely unacceptable for such a significant charge.
The delivery on 24 June was equally poor. The delivery team made one brief attempt to get the mattress upstairs, then refused to try a reasonable alternative angle. I was not asking them to damage or force the mattress — simply to try rotating it differently. Instead, one of the staff went outside, called the office without consulting with me, and reported it as a failed delivery. The mattress was then taken away. I was left having paid over £1,400 with no mattress.
When I went back to the Colchester store the next day, I was told there should have been a customer checklist showing that I had been made aware of the 20% charge. I asked him to find my signed copy. (As I heard him curse under his breath...) THERE WAS NO SUCH SIGNED CHECKLIST COMPLETED BY THE SALES STAFF WHO DEALT WITH MY PURCHASE. I had never seen it before. To me, that says everything.
Bensons are now trying to say that if I want a refund, they will only refund 80% and keep 20%. I find that OUTRAGEOUS. They did not deliver the mattress, they did not get my agreement to classify the delivery as failed, and they did not properly inform me of the 20% charge before taking my money.
Their customer service response has also been deeply disappointing. Rather than acknowledging the obvious problem — that I was never made to sign the checklist and was not properly informed of the fee — I was told I would need to wait for internal checks and for the salesperson to be asked what he remembered. That is simply not good enough.
The documentary evidence is clear:
- no signed checklist,
- no signed acknowledgement of the fee, and
- Terms and Conditions sent only after payment.
This TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE with Bensons for Beds has caused huge stress at the worst possible time, as we were moving into a new property and needed a mattress to sleep on. Instead, we've been left without the product we paid for and then tried to penalise us financially for a failed delivery that I dispute.
I am 100% dissatisfied with Bensons for Beds. Based on my experience, I would strongly warn other customers to never buy from them. Do not rely on what is said in store. We have had no mattress, no proper accountability, and Bensons trying to keep hundreds of pounds. What's more, after the delivery failed, the customer services team never got in contact with me to discuss options for a replacement etc.
ABSOLUTELY AVOID BENSONS, and I will not stop in this case to get a full refund due to the negligent duties of their staff.
