Nice cars, but too many little irritants
Nice cars, clean and new. Not cheap. I spent over £1k for a Mercedes E300 convertible for a long weekend. Mostly a positive experience but some avoidable irritations.
They didn’t have the car I originally wanted so I had to arrange an alternative via email with them, which was ok. They were responsive and friendly.
However, they wouldn’t let me collect from London City airport unelss I was flying in to that airport. A bit of a pointless and irritating bureaucratic rule - why does it matter to Avis Prestige if I’m flying in or just live near by? In practice I do live near by and it would have saved me some time on my journey if they had delivered there. They would still get to charge the airport surcharge, too. But they refused to let me collect from there. They delivered to my home, including delivery charge.
It was delivered roughly on time (about 25 mins late) but that was fine - they had warned me about this by phone the day before. The fuel wasn’t quite to the top of the tank but I was asked to refill to the top.
When returning the car, I was allowed to return it to LCY airport, oddly.
I later found out they charged me £18 for the London congestion charge. I don’t live in the congestion zone and I didn’t drive through it, but THEY drove through the congestion zone when delivering the car to me. It seems this was inevitable because I think they’re based inside the congestion zone, and they delivered the car from Kensington. I assume this includes some kind of admin fee on Avis’s part too. When I complained about being charged £18, they said it was my liability and it was mentioned in the T&Cs. They knew they would incur this charge ahead of time, and that they would pass this cost on to me, but the didn’t mention it when giving me a price, and didn’t do anything else to bring it to my attention. Really annoyed me.
They are responsive and polite, but as a company it’s odd they don’t realise that these little irritating things spoil the whole experience and make me much less likely to use them again. It sounds fussy but they charge a premium price so should provide a premium (or ‘Prestige’) service.
I usually use a company called The Out, who aren’t perfect but they offer a much nicer/smoother service, and fantastic Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar cars. I’ll have to think hard before I use Avis Prestige again unfortunately.
Update. They refunded me the £18 (bit said it will apply next time) and apologised for the fuel tank not being full.
