I've just got back from Roald Amundsen…

I've just got back from Roald Amundsen and what an amazing trip to Antarctica.

The ship is fantastic with everything you need, food exceeded expectations and the cabin had everything needed.

The staff are great but the real success are the expedition staff. Engaging, genuinely caring about their area of expertise and the lectures and lessons were superb.

Great organisation of the trips on and off the ship, Zodiacs were brilliant, the kayaking amazing and the choice of destinations each day worked really well.

The onboard app is excellent and works well and the communication throughout was spot on.

I can't fault any aspect of the trip.

Poor communication and customer services does not bode well...

This company seems to be having a number of issues. Since paying in full there has been no communication as to further details of the trip which is now 18 days away. Emails go unanswered for lengths of time and contact details are confusing with different email addresses and phone numbers across the USA, UK and Estonia. Finally did manage to talk with someone who was helpful but couldn't answer questions. It would appear that my travel documents had gone to junk mail. The 'travel document' are a website that seems to be advertising extensions and telling you what a fabulous time you will have but absolutely no specifics. In spite of transfers to and from Quito airport being included I was told I was not eligible as I arrive a day early so having paid a considerable sum of money and under the illusion the transfer is included I will now land and need to find my own way ...penny pinching and putting clients at risk. The website is clunky apparently I haven't filled in the manifest form although I have done so twice. I have repeatedly asked about return times to Quito to be told this will be advised 'later' although no definition of later and no help in organising ongoing travel. I chose this provider following a great trip to Norway last year but HX are no longer part of that company and it shows in the poor communication, awful platforms and penny pinching. Apparently the issues with emails, the website, and communication is due to the newness of the company although they have no problem grabbing as much money as they can and then providing very little in return. I have no option now but to travel but it has tainted the entire trip, made me as a solo traveller very wary and has ensured that my trip to the Antarctic in 2026 is with another provider. Beware!

So it took more than five weeks for a response. Just to update HX outsource to an Ecuadorian company called Metropolitan Tours. They are patchy. The cruise on Santa Cruz II was excellent but delivers because of the exceptional staff: expedition, hotel services and crew to a person work huge hours and really want you to see the Galapagos at its best. Metropolitan tour services in Quito fell short. Tour guides seem to go through the motions with a big focus on tips. One poor client who had had all her credit cards and phone stolen was left at the airport because her bag was delayed and told to take a taxi (she had no means of paying for it). The representative left her because ‘the other passengers were getting angry’. It would seem that HX isn’t really aware of what is happening on the ground and quality control is non-existent. In fact HX seem to be focused on aggressive sales and marketing in the US, the UK and other parts of Europe and Australia. Once paid up you get whatever Metropolitan Tours provides. This also means that much of what you pay leaves Ecuador. Had I known this I would have used another provider.
2 May update so in spite of reaching out and claiming they want to do a full investigation there has been no response to detailed issues raised with them. Their last correspondence was to assert they had investigated but there were no details or an apology. Offered 250 Euro credit off my next booking which will never occur. Again don't expect any response if issues arise.

HX Expeditions poor customer service

Trip to Antarctica was cancelled due to technical faults with MS Nansen. Lack of straight communication, when stranded in Buenos Aires. Subsequent endless string of e-mails with customer service to get compensation for ruined vacation.

Antarctica with HX Expeditions…..

I have just been onboard MS Roald Amundsen visiting Antarctica and I cannot fault my experience.
The expedition team onboard in particular are amazing. Their lectures were engaging and interesting with Henryk and Niek being a standout for me.
Antarctica itself is indescribable and is worth the long journey here. It is a stunning and beautiful destination with HX putting together a great itinerary with landings in Antarctica each day.
I would highly recommend an additional night in Buenos Aires to break up the travelling.
I would recommend HX Expeditions to anyone looking for a once in a lifetime cruise.

The cruise was good
But be warned the add ons or pre and post cruise excursions are sub contracted to another company and are truly awful and chaotic
Our experience was not good
I’ve made a claim for a refund and await the outcome

Cruise 10 Customer Service 1

The cruise itself is 10/10 Customer Service is very poor.

I have done 7 HX cruises with 3 more booked so I am a very loyal customer. Unfortunately I had to cancel a cruise due to cancer. All the other bookings, British Airways, Iberia, LATAM, Marriott, Gatwick Parking they either refunded or gave me a voucher to use at a future date. Despite escalating this to senior management I was told to claim off my travel insurance!! Come on HX this is no way to treat a loyal customer. You have a fantastic time on board, but read the reviews here, you destroy your brand by poor customer service when the staff on board make it an unforgettable experience. The last thing I needed was to make an insurance claim while trying to sort out my health issues. All I asked for was to transfer the deposit to a future booking or hold the deposit for future use but you declined that request. You are lucky you still have a customer.

Once on board you will have a wonderful time made possible by the excellent staff.

Expérience sur le ROALD AMUNDSEN du 21…

Expérience sur le ROALD AMUNDSEN du 21 Octobre 2024 au 08 Novembre 2024. ATTENTION : si vous n'êtes pas bilingue Anglais / Allemand, la langue française est totalement inexistante. Les paysages sont magnifiques - au moins c'est indéniable. Si l'on doit protéger la nature, et faire un geste éco responsable alors dans ce cas, supprimez le camping et la baignade (les manchots ont été très perturbés). Si vous comptez voir des Manchots empereurs, n'y comptez pas ils sont au Pôle Sud, peu de faune (sauf manchots GENTOO, ADELIE et JUGULAIRES). Tirage au sort pour les sorties en kayak - bizarrement ceux qui avaient déjà fait la sortie en kayak à CASTRO ont pu également sortir en kayak en ANTARCTIQUE - bizarre - même les personnes ayant quelques notions en anglais (comme moi, je ne suis pas bilingue) je n'ai pas été tirée au sort. Bref. Idem pour ceux qui souhaitaient faire du camping sur la banquise - tirage au sort. Les conférences des scientifiques (très intéressantes) sont toutes en anglais voire en américain. Si vous n'avez pas un guide français qui traduit - bonne chance. Le temps n'était pas vraiment au top de sa forme - sur 4 Jours en Antarctique 1 seule journée ensoleillée - sinon pluie, grésil et neige. Le mois d'octobre n'est peut être pas le mois idéal pour faire ce voyage. Je regrette sincèrement que la langue française soit bannie - nous payons quand même le prix élevé de l'expédition.

HX Poor customer service

Would never travel with hurtigruten again. Dreadful customer service, and communication when things go wrong with the schedule, when there are cancellations or delays. Total disregard for clients. Disgraceful. One of the most stressful, disappointing and expensive holidays we have ever had. We were totally mis-sold, ie the holiday was nothing like what was advertised. Compensation promised has not materialised and we are out of pocket due to hurtigruten

Trip was delayed due to technical faults on the ship. We lost a third of our holiday. There was a total lack of information and the truncated holiday totally failed to deliver the vacation that was sold with scheduled destinations omitted.
During the delay we received inadequate subsistence and there was an absence of information and customer care. The emails from customer service were inaccurate and failed to acknowledge the situation.
On return we have to battle to obtain any financial compensation.
The service of the staff on the boats is good. However the quality of customer service and willingness to accept responsibility is appalling

Des souvenirs à couper le souffle

Nous avons passé un séjour formidable au Groenland sur le Fram.
Les prestations allant de la gastronomie aux activités, aussi ludique que scientifique, ont rendu ce séjour inoubliable.

De plus, tout est fait pour que l'on ai l'occasion de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes à table, à travers les multiples excursions et/ou durant les restitutions scientifiques.

A travers cette croisière, nous avons voyagé avec des passionnés qui avaient coeur de nous partager tout ce que l'on découvrait au fur et à mesure.

C'était ma première croisière et je ne savais pas que je pourrais avoir une approche aussi ludique sur la découverte du Groenland.

Transfer with a positive outcome.

A SUCCESSFUL BOOKING OUTCOME
After having booked a trip to South Georgia for November 2024 unforeseen medical reasons resulted in us having to cancel this trip. Initially, our request for a transfer to 2025 proved difficult. However, once the booking was reviewed at a more senior level, we had a successful and considered response allowing for a transfer of our original booking to 2025. I would say that if booking with Hurtigruten, be assured that even if - for whatever reason - problems occur before travel - there will be a solution and I would happily book in the future without reservation. How a company deals with problems is important and in our case, Hurtigruten have proved that they care about their customer base. Thank you Hurtigruten.

High expectations exceeded

Just home after completing the Hurtigruten Alaska and British Columbia Wilderness, Glaciers and Culture cruise, starting in Vancouver and ending in Anchorage. Absolutely brilliant. We were blessed with brilliant weather, which made the beautiful Alaskan fjords even more spectacular. This was an expedition cruise and included zodiac boat trips into the fjords, out to glaciers and looking for wildlife.saw a lot of whales and eagles - usually from a distance but still easy to see. We also paid extra to go kayaking through the ice floes at Harvard Fjord - that was a great experience. Cultural visits to various small Alaskan towns, absorbing local indigenous culture, was also fascinating. Excellent crew and top level expedition team made every expedition safe and interesting - and fun. Excellent cabin, well structured, and great food. (Though we found some of the food in the main restaurant a little bland and regularly had lunch and dinner in the smaller restaurant that had a much more limited range of food.) We had high expectations for this cruise after loving a Hurtigruten cruise we didvinnNkrway, and those expectations were met and exceeded. The only downer was going to the Hilton Hotel in Anchorage, included in the tour, which was a mess - the hotel made such a mess of checking in that people waited four hours for a room and tge only way I could get our bags was to go to their luggage room and find it among the piles of bags randomly stacked there.)

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

Where to start?! Our expedition cruise to Antarctica with HX was a mind-blowing experience that went far beyond what we imagined. We've returned home with memories to treasure for a lifetime! 

We chose the 'Antarctic Circle' expedition with MS Roald Amundsen—and wow, what a ship! It's incredibly modern and offers a great range of amenities, like a small spa, swimming pool, and science centre. We absolutely LOVED the science centre and the lectures. What's more, the variety and quality of food were also exceptional, considering the remote areas we explored. 

One of the highlights of our trip was the incredible staff. They could not have been friendlier, always going above and beyond to ensure we had the best possible experience. The Expedition Team was particularly impressive—incredibly knowledgeable and keen to share their insights and passion for a wide range of topics.  

We felt like we were exploring with experts. The Expedition Team made every landing and excursion a unique learning experience, and they greatly expanded our understanding and appreciation of Antarctica. The wildlife we encountered and the scenery we explored went above and beyond my wildest dreams. Watching whales bubble feed is something we'll always remember. 

I highly recommend exploring Antarctica with HX.

Fantastic trip with HX to Antarctica!

We recently travelled with HX Expeditions to Antarctica on their Nansen ship for the 10 day 'highlights of Antarctica' cruise.

The whole experience was fantastic, the ship was so comfortable, the food was great and the staff were outstanding.

Torstein was our expedition leader and he did an amazing job of engaging everyone and making it a wonderful experience. We saw lots of whales, seals and of course many many penguins :-)

The science and history talks were also really fascinating, we got into the history of the golden age of exploration and this is something we'll continue to read more about.

Overall it was a fantastic trip and we couldn't have chosen a better company to travel with.
